Making a Sentai Solarian

Advice

So I've been watching Uchu Sentai Kyuranger and I was struggling for a character idea for my Starfinder game, but then it hit me that a Solarian could easily be played in the style of a superhero. I know I'll be going human, and since our team needs a front line tanky type I'm figuring to take Solar Weapon and wear heavy armor.

Any general tips would be appreciated. Should I even bother buying a ranged weapon? Heavy Armor proficiency will take up one of my feat slots, but I'll still have a 2nd due to being Human. What's a good theme to take for this kind of build?

Whole thread on this build, basically

Use a returning starknife as your range weapon. Otherwise, read that thread.

I also urge the use of a Returning Starknife - As the guy who wrote that guide. Heh.

While I have looked at the thread, certain options listed don't seem to apply in this particular case. For example, it recommends Ace Pilot as the best Theme, but why should I go for a dexterity increase if I'll be wearing heavy armor?

So you can reach Dexterity 15 by level 5 - This allows you to take Nimble Moves.

Nimble Moves allows you to ignore 20 ft worth of difficult terrain, which allows you to charge through (up to) 20ft of the stuff which normally stops charges. In addition to a number of other combat feats which are useful for Solarians that also have a 15 Dex prerequisite.

Though, technically, any theme that grants +1 to Dexterity, Charisma, or Strength works. That is just the one that has the highest effective benefit ratio.

You also still need Dexterity even with Heavy Armor. As you need +5 Dexterity bonus by level 20 to take full advantage of your Heavy Armor. Unlike Pathfinder armor doesn't stay at a max Dexterity of +1. On average Heavy Armor allows Dexterity of +2 to +5. So you'll still have to raise it regularly to stay competitive as far as EAC/KAC goes.

Either way, it's just a guide. Follow it to whatever degree you want to, and then customize your own character and choices however you want ;)

If you want to go superhero, you can go with icon instead of ace pilot.

Ranged: Starknife, type

You might want to take a level of Soldier starting out. Gives you all kind of goodies and you can pick and choose a combat style (Blitz, Bombard, or Guard styles all bring something useful and I feel is more then worth delaying your Solarian levels by 1).

The biggest problem I have with the Solarian is they're pretty weak for starship combat. So plan to spend something in your skill slots to help out there. Suggest you take a look at what will be at your table and then pick either Computers or Engineer (Someone almost always takes Piloting and you probably wont have the high DEX modifier.)

Many people, including me, strongly disagree with this. Delaying Revelations hurts a lot.

This is only true of you have an Envoy in the group (which isn't a sure thing by any means). If you don't have one of those, odds are very good you're the best Captain in the group (and certainly the best Captain who doesn't have something else they'd be better off doing). And Captain is a pretty powerful role.

If you do have an Envoy who isn't doing something other than Captain, then you've got an issue in this regard, but that's hardly a given.

Cool idea!

Maybe your sentai solarion hero can try and stop my slasher solarion villain someday!

:P
