Would You Trade A Feat For A Stat enhancement?

Homebrew and House Rules

How strong would a pc or npc be if they got a random stat bump every level? Would it be worth your feats for something like that? I blame this frame of thoughts on watching too much anime. Thats twenty stat points spread across 6 stats on top of what you already have. I am wondering how good or bad that would be?

It might work for a one off npc, but definitely not for a player. I don't think it would be worth it, since most feats are far more useful than a few stat points. You would have to put all 20 points into str, just to be comparable to power attack. But making it completely random means they will have fewer options and just be plain worse than having feats.

No offense, but anime doesn't generally work like that. If you want anime inspired, go for variant multiclassing and automatic bonus progression, both from Unchained

I know almost nothing about anime, but our group allows stat+1 in place of a feat and vice-versa. Most go with feats over stat bumps.

It hasn't caused an issue, yet.

Shhhhh.....Don't tell anybody but the anime was an excuse for my questions.... >.>

Also was having issues on how to balance such a thing. That aside would it be too strong to stack on top of a class and not take anything away? Balancing be darned!

If you gave them 1 stat point per level on top of everything else they would normally get, then it shouldn't affect the balance too much as long as you put a limit to it. Something like you can't put more than 6 points (for a mod of +3) into any one stat. That way it will still provide a boost, but shouldn't be game breaking.

I would trade a feat for a specific stat bump of +2, but probably not a random one. I wouldn't trade all my feats, though.

I think I might be willing to exchange all my feats for +1 random stat bump per level on a martial character who has access to a couple bonus combat feats.

Characters generally don't need more ways to min-max their ability scores.

+1 to a specific stat is well worth a feat: -- You get your prime stat, if odd, up to even four levels earlier. If you know a campaign has a certain level cap, it's gold.
