What are our options with the options on the nerf chopping block?

A number of our options (clear spindle, lore warden, tribal scars) are going to be altered as soon as they're put into the srd. Can we

  • Swap the options out now
  • have to wait till the options change
  • You're stuck with them, no backies. MUhahhahahaha

Tongue in beak snarky response:
I think the goal is to have as many characters spontaneously self-combust at the GenCon Specials this year as possible, so they can free up spots for volunteers and GMs that didn't get a chance to get tickets to them.

All joking aside, I hope that the first option is a legal choice, because having to wait however many *months* or *years* would be kinda a long time to write 'Implementation Delay' on chronicles, plus may inspire 'Assimar/Tiefling'-grade powerleveling.

Yep, we have a preliminary write-up of how we're handling rules updates, including more permissive options for rebuilding in cases where the baseline rules update policy would be insufficient.

If there is a special dispensation that you believe is necessary based on the recent Additional Resources update, let me know here. Based on the history of rules update threads, it would be helpful to stick to the specifics of how the issue affects your character. It's harder to build policy around broad statements of disapproval.

For example:
What Changed: The Galtan guillotine-savant slayer archetype
What's the problem: The gratuitous coup ability changed from an attack action to a standard action, which throws off my Vital Strike build.
What I'd like to see: Just retraining my slayer levels doesn't really correct things. I also need to retrain my Vital Strike feats and offload this +1 vorpal scythe.

Note: I am aware of the thread requesting that one or more options be grandfathered. Let's keep grandfathering concerns there, not here.

OK, how about:

What Changed: Maneuver Training only applies to one or two maneuvers for most of a character's PFS life.
What's the problem: My trip+disarm Lore Warden dipped another class to get Improved Grapple as an option. Now that suddenly loses 2-4 points of attack bonus, making it much less likely to succeed on much of anything he's been fighting.
What I'd like to see: I need to retrain that other class level along with Lore Warden; either choosing another option it provided or just dropping the archetype completely.

Most of what I'm asking is if the baseline rules update policy goes into effect before the mandatory update.

I don't think we've ever had a "this thing is going to change".

So for example Grr a foxform fighter has Tribal scars raptor scale. Can I swap it out for Pirhana strike now or do i need to wait until the option is changed officially ?

Important to note: At NO cost/free retrain if adopted earlier than actual 'official/official' date.

As am I Isabelle. In the meantime Mr. Compton, can I make a recommendation that rather than isolate your request to a thread by someone else that others haven't seen, you create a thread (possibly stickied) to make sure these issues are consistently addressed? I'm merely flashing back to the ACG eratta and Slashing Grace being limited to a single hand, which absolutely ruined one of my characters (a two-weapon fighting swashbuckler) and wasn't fixable because I could only retrain slashing grace, leaving me with TWF feats and negative Strength.

Even if any special Pathfinder Society resolution/dispensation should happen before the PRD is updated, the working assumption's that any changes—retraining allowances, reselling gear, etc.—would have no in-game cost.

That makes sense. See this Handling Adventurer's Guide Updates thread.

How does not owning the adventurers guide affect the updates? I assume you have to sell/retrain those options as you cannot actually use the updated version without the book.

See that one line right at the end of the AG entry: "Earlier sources in which these rules originally appeared remain a legal source for accessing these updated character options."

It means you have to print out something from the PRD for a book you don't own, but the book containing the original version "counts as" ownership of that part of the Adventurer's Guide.
