@Smash&Jaster Thanks for the language tips. :) I'll probably leave my languages as is, but good to know if I get into the game and want to add some later. :)
And yeah, credits makes it easier. I think the Brilliant Plan fund could be cool. We'll see how it works. You never know if something that looks cool is actually going to *be* that cool until you use it in-game. :)
Oh, and did you see? I made the sunglasses a stylized version of Spectacles of Understanding. Hides the eyes and lets me read road signs in strange cities all at the same time. :)
@Bogard: They can't accept your character until you come up with all the stats for it, so they see what it can do. You need to give your character a name, make an alias for it, and come up with all the details. Here are some good places to start:
http://jody-white.com/pathfinder-ability-score-calculator.php [<--Jaster's game is 25 point buy]
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/character-creation/ [<--These are some other things to do when you are starting a new character]
Also, just looked at Shobhad. That's a really unusual race that's more powerful than most other races. You can submit anything you want, of course, but we had a discussion earlier about those sorts of races probably not being a good fit for this game. Something to consider.
You can private message me if you have questions. I would be happy to help you with making a character if you aren't used to how to do it online. I just recently learned myself, so I might have some good links you could use.

Alright, so I've got the idea to play a sort of supernatural private investigator. The kind of character who's one of the main characters in a game of Call of Cthulu, who takes on all those jobs that normal regular people just can't handle.
I'll be going with a human occultist (psychodermist) 4/gunslinger 1.
I'm not entirely sure what the plan is for the next adventure, but I read through some of the gameplay thread - the PCs are under the employ of a billionaire credit card company owner, and they're traveling all over the world solving supernatural threats? If it's appropriate, I have an idea of how to introduce me: Some private citizen hired me to investigate some smaller portion of whatever it is the PCs need to do, and I meet up with the PCs in the course of my investigation. We join forces, discover that it's bigger than my client thinks it is, and then when all is said and done I get recruited as well.
The character I'm thinking of is no refined spy, or anything like that. He is an investigator because he can't hold down a day job, and he happens to be fast, clever and pretty tough, at least, enough to take down various monsters. I am thinking that he would be from the American South or Midwest, and after he moved to more densely populated areas discovered that he had a proclivity for murdering monsters which soft city-folk simply happen to not have.
He's on a vacation in Japan (a dream destination for him) when a local notices him. There are Youtube videos of him ranting about gun-rights and urban security, and he has a channel explaining how to use various weapons and survival equipment. This fan of his has a friend who has a supernatural problem, and presto-change-o, he has a new job while he's on vacation.

When he turned 18, Steve obediently joined the military,a proud American to the core. It turned out during his military aptitude tests that he had a predilection for psychic powers, and he was assigned, following basic training, to the intelligence branch of the military. He went on tour in Afganistan, following his training, and joined up as someone who was responsible for rooting out ISIS hiding spots. While he performed his job admirably, he was dishonorably discharged after a year and sent back to America. While in the field, he had discovered a warren of desert goblins, and his superiors had decided that they were a dangerous chaos element and had ordered them destroyed. Steve had refused to turn over the location of their warren, and had met with one of them to warn him about moving, and so he was discharged for refusing to follow orders.
Steve knew that he couldn't face his family after being dishonorably discharged. Eighty percent of his family were veterans, and good explanation or no, they would be angry with him for failing to live up to the family standard. So, he snuck home to gather his things, and moved himself to Detroit to find industrial work. His skill-set wasn't exactly appropriate for the tech boom, and he wasn't an entertainer, nor did he have the money or military support for higher education. However, he quickly found that he wasn't particularly good at being under some manager's thumb either. From his first job, he was fired for fraternizing with a co-worker, and his second job at a factory ended when the factory closed. His third job, he talked back to the owner when the owner was trying to deny service to a group of immigrant gnomes, and was fired. This went on for a few years, until eventually Steve found himself running out of money, unemployed, and despondent. Wandering through the night, he came across a young orcish teenager being attacked by a darkmantle, and fought it off with his fists. The teenager quickly thanked him and ran away, presumably to go home, and Steve didn't think much of it. However, a few days later, the boy and his mother tracked Steve down, feeding the birds at the same park. The mother wanted to thank Steve profusely for rescuing her son, and had a bit of money for him. In addition, she said, she had a bit of a problem... and asked whether Steve would help her take care of it. Her attic, she said, was infested with gremlins, and the mother proposed to pay Steve for driving them out.
Well, this was the start of Steve's latest job, one which he actually felt proud of. Word of mouth spread quickly, and soon Steve was inundated with requests to find a missing niece, or to rid a dangerous alleyway of a lurking choker, or to lift a troublesome curse. Detroit was absolutely full of hidden nooks and crannies for undesirable monsters to lurk in, and Steve found himself actually prosperous soon.
It has been about a year of this now, and Steve has decided to take some of his well-earned money and go on vacation. Always fascinated with the culture, geography, and the women of Japan, he's booked an AirBnb and a plane ticket.

I'm also changing a couple of minor things: two ranks from Profession (detective) into Profession (soldier), the Giant language to the Goblin language, and four ranks from Swim into Diplomacy. Everything that I don't get automatically should be visible on the sheet I've provided, but ask if you have questions or want me to spell everything out.

@bogard
I am not entirely sure on the concept of a Sobhad, as they are quite powerful, though feel free to make and post that build or any other at your discretion.
@Nazuri
Saw that, liked it, wished I thought of it first.
@Leinathan
Sounds good to me. Always been partial to the Occultist class (Hellblazer and Hellboy fan, here) and there doesn't seem to be any problems with the fit in the universe. However, as a whole, this is meant to be a mostly apolitical game. Different, in-universe terrorist groups might pop up, but I want to steer clear of anything overly recognizeable and controversial.

I understand that and wasn't planning to be political. Its just, as a spy in the U.S. military, ISIS is what he'd be after. Its just a name drop.

Oh yeah! I just checked it out - the "guns everywhere" option makes my mwk rifle (which is already an advanced firearm) only 1,000gp instead of 7,300, which frees up 6,300 of my starting gold. I might have to buy a few more things...
Like for instance, a 700gp masterwork revolver, 2,000gp to make my rifle +1, a traveler's any-tool, a set of muleback cords. It costs 3,950, which leaves me with 2,350 more.
I also noticed that I don't get my aura sight power, nor do I qualify for the quickness focus power, which means I'm adjusting around my implements - swapping abjuration for illusion and taking the unseen focus power instead. Swapping out resistance for ghost sound, shield for silent image and node of blasting for mirror image.
Apologies for the many posts and adjustments. I made the character originally in a bit of a hurry... but I think I'm actually all totally done now.
Joseph Soltz |
So, I've been thinking about this game, and my character for it. I can't really think of any reason why he would stick around long term with the party, seeing as how they're under the employ of a credit card company, essentially. Far too corporate for his liking and my liking with the flavor of the character I put forth. I've been trying to come up with something nice and thematic like that, but I just can't figure anything out that I want to stick with, unfortunately. Maybe I'll look into Spheres of Power/Might for some inspiration, if you're not opposed to them, but in the meantime, I've got nothing in Paizo content or Gonzo that I feel I could both adequately bring life to and have fit in at least moderately.
Edit: I've got an idea for a control-based Sage via the Spheres of Might playtest, focused probably around using the Wrestling sphere with Ki Infuser, grappling foes at range and forcing other effects along with them.
That, or I could be a heroic sumo, based around the Brute sphere.
Joseph Soltz |
I would edit if I could. Infuser sage with the Wrestling sphere seems really cool, but there are a lot of really wonky interactions, since the sphere abilities assume you're in melee range of your opponent.
I think, instead, a Barrage Sphere ki Blaster, using his ki blasts to inflict effects with something like Ki Bomb or the scatter ability, might be fun, flavorful, and more fitting of a concept. Hopefully more useful, too, with some good Battlefield control instead of more melee damage.
Jaster Kite |
It's not necessarily just a credit card company, though. They do everything, like some sort of loony toons Acme company.
Probably not any better.
I've got a few ideas for why you would stick around. This is going to be a pretty big adventure in Japan, with some pretty big threats and the promise for more chaos down the line (this alien adventure currently going on is a breather episode for the main plot, which will pick up full force, soon). Maybe it'd be 'cause you like your new allies. They're a hoot.
Then again, I do like sumo.
Joseph Soltz |
Sorry to throw a wrench in things this far into rerecruitment. Definitely not any better, to be fair. If you would rather, between saiyan style sage and sumo, I go sumo, I've already got a build in mind for either that should both be ridiculous and helpful in a general, BFC kinda way. Either one will be able to put out some damage, too, but the focus will definitely be on controlling enemies via shenanigans.
Edit: I was leaning towards Sage but... Brutish sumo it is, I think. Just too silly for me to pass up, it hopefully fits in the upcoming segment and thereafter, and Thunderous Clap is too good an opportunity to pass up.
At least, assuming Legendary Talents are on the table. This seems like a game where they absolutely would be, though. And who doesn't want a sumo to clap people into walls and such?
Again, I'm really sorry to complicate things, but I'll have a character up Tuesday, hopefully.
Edit again: Would you be opposed to my creating a new Martial Tradition for sumo? I'm thinking start with crushing Juggernaut, replace Armor training with Unarmored Training, and the discipline talent (since Sumo is definitely an unarmed combat style) with the Wrestling sphere. If you've got any other ideas for that instead, or want to avoid it altogether, just let me know.

You know, I probably would :)

Wrestling sphere doesn't fit as cleanly as I wanted to, and I've moved a little bit (mechanically) from what I had oringinally anticipated, due to changes in the SoM playtest. Since I've heard little by way of "You can't do the thing", I'd like to propose Balanced Defense, from Equipment, instead of the formerly proposed Wrestling Sphere, but I don't have anything specific in mind, honestly, since I'd feel bad getting a brute talent. It would be more fitting, but... getting the Brute sphere and a free talent therein is already awfully nice, almost like not paying for it.
Will build with Balanced Defense, I don't see the small scaling bonus to AC being problematic (though at this point, all I've done is look at talents and choose my point buy).
Edit: (An alternative could be Rock Toss, which is a discipline talent. Not so much a fitting talent for a sumo, though, so much as a fitting talent for "Big martial guy". I'll leave the decision, ultimately, to you, though.)
Joseph Soltz |
My mind keeps jumping from thing to thing. Would the psionic (giving up the psionic portion for an alternate racial trait) race of Half-Giant be okay? It fits too well for this simply mammoth man, and whether Powerful Build applies to Unarmed Strike or not doesn't really matter to me. It's a matter of two damage or so, either way, and I just like the visual of an 8-foot Sumo, essentially the only in his weight class, wreaking havoc across battlefield, knocking back swathes of foes. A 35 foot cone of "Get up against the nearest wall" sounds terrifying, with his clap, and at a reasonably solid bonus, too, for a reasonable amount of both damage and control. With some wiggle room in enemy movement control, with Hostile Movement, he can move enemies into eachother more easily, setting off Dominoes, Hammer, and maybe some more things down the line.

Sorry for so many double-posts. I think I might be even more excited about this than I was the punk, unfortunately. I think I just like campy things.
Edit: For HP, do you mind if we take average instead of roll? I don't remember seeing it anywhere. That will give me a nice, safe HP total of 55, instead of potentially rolling far worse. Low HP rolls hurt way more than high HP rolls help.
Edit, The Second: While this started out as sort of a flavor-build kinda thing, this seems surprisingly good at some decent battlefield control against non-casty opponents, as long as it's not a "boss" encounter Otori's up against. Or at least, only works moderately well against the boss, itself, of said boss encounter.
Joseph Soltz |
Alright, if you insist, I'll roll for HP.
Level 1: 10 + 3 + 1 = 14
Level 2: 1d10 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 1 = 14
Level 3: 1d10 + 3 + 1 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 1 + 3 = 15
Level 4: 1d10 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 1 + 1 = 11
Level 5: 1d10 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 1 + 1 = 11
So.... that's a total of.... can't... maths...
HP: 14 + 14 + 15 + 11 + 11 = 65
65. 65 HP, with a slightly delayed damage pool.
Joseph Soltz |
I fell asleep on my tablet while trying to put that bad boy up on a character sheet. I'll try and finish him up this evening after work!
Any word on the Half-giant? The alternate racial trait I want to take, if my memory serves me, gives a +1 to CMB, and gives up the Stomp power and the +4 to survival. While stomp is neat, I'll likely end up taking the Earthquake Stomp legendary talent at some point, if selected.
Edited for link and for further explanation.
Joseph Soltz |
As I've been working on this character in my head, I've got visions of him watching movies like Godzilla, you know, Kaiju movies, and as he grows, way larger than any of the people he goes to school with, that sort of thing, his mindset sort of drifting towards "Some day, I will fight off the Kaiju, and I will protect Japan, and I will be [I]the[I] Yokozuna, bested by no others."
Joseph Soltz |
Wish I could edit to fix that. I see Spheres of Power is allowed; I think I might swap a feat out for basic magical training, eventually advanced, perhaps.
Editing for Clarity: I think I'm going to swap toughness and improved initiative for Basic Magic Training and Advanced Magic Training, whether a magic tradition is granted with it or not, to assist in Otori's Kaiju fighting dream.
leinathan |
As long as we're playing this game, I kind of picture my character like Watson from the Sherlock series (I mean, not necessarily Martin Freeman's version, but just the concept of the character), but less refined and less successful. For Watson, his detective-ing pulls him away from his other life, and that's the main conflict for him. For Steve, being a detective is basically the only thing that keeps him from the unemployment line / drug addiction / shame.
However, they're both ex-military, both disciplined and fair, and both use the skills that they learned in their previous life so far to enter a profession that they hadn't envisioned for themselves.
Steve is a hard worker, is loyal, is clever, and he follows his gut in all things.
Otori Akinori |
I am 1000% okay with wishing for Kaiju, and am working out a way to make sure I don't need buffs or anything from anyone else to be able to fight them. Should be able to hit Huge size at level 6 a few times for day, with powerful build having me count as gargantuan, which will let me bull rush colossal foes.
Unrelated: I have about half a stat block or so that I'm working on as I get the opportunity. I've got time between my shifts tomorrow, I'll finish up everything I need to then. :)
Edit: Half giant? Powerful Build and Unarmed Strike?
I also had a question that would skew some things. I can't imagine a sumo wearing any combat gear other than his mawashi. Would you consider allowing such a character to use Automatic Bonus Progression, donating his earnings to relief projects, cleanup efforts after his fights, etc? Hold onto some money for food (sumos eat about 20k calories a day!), travel, lodging, and that sort of thing, but otherwise just some basic clothing and his mawashi.
Otori Akinori |
Not a problem! I'm not too worried about it; I don't intend to use much of my money either way except for bare necessities. I think I have enough "interesting options" built in to forego complicating thinga with weird magic items. Unfortunately, though, the game in general assumes some things, numerically.
Otori Akinori |
...
I'd definitely consider it. A combination of old world tradition and magic with new-school cybertech definitely fits thematically with a modern/postmodern "warrior" of sorts, and I'd definitely take you up on that, if selected. I'll still likely donate to aforementioned things, but since regular sumo is already a little below Otori's "pay grade" so to speak... A little extra oomph to help him compete with Kaiju doesn't seem too far out of the question.
Edit: It's a real shame that the physical score cybertech put out by paizo, as well as the dermal plating, all take up the same slot, and therefore can't be combined. Still not that worried about gear, but definitely slightly saddened by this turn of events.
Otori Akinori |
Well, sorry for the poor state of things, but the restaurant I work at has been super under-staffed lately. Now that I actually have a day off, I have errands to run, and an interview to go to, so while I fiddled with Otori a little bit, he's still in a sorry state. I don't have a ton left to do, but it's enough that I feel bad even considering it a submission :/
