I mean Azazel is a weird guy, but considering we got Stilt-man and the Human Fly....I kind of just go with it, Set.

Scarab Sages

Now that the Gamma Flight miniseries is done, I find the entire thing to have been....merely adequate. My favorite character in the entire series was Absorbing Man. I liked what they did with his power. Other than that, if I had skipped the series, I wouldn't have missed much.

Picked up Batman The Imposter on a whim. It's the latest Black Label book. Nice art and an interesting story. I look forward to seeing where they go with it.

I think the Ka-Zar series has a lot of potential, even if it's only a limited run. The Savage Land as a whole is a setting rich with story potential. It's a shame they don't use it more. I'm liking Ka-Zar's new powers. Domovoy - an interesting reference from Salvic myth. Will he actually be one of the Nuwali? Or maybe some sentient aspect of their alien tech? We'll see.

Avengers - so the whole thing was a con by She-Hulk. I'm liking that. I'm not really a fan of this Red Widow character, so it's fun to see her get fooled. I also liked the idea of Namor being a bad leader - it kind of fits with how much of an a$*!&@~ he's been acting like. Underwater Thuderstorm - file under....act of God. Sweet!

As much as I love Jean Grey (especially the way they've been drawing her), I've got to maybe call b$*&%~!$ on this. That she could so easily kick the s+!@ out of Nightmare. The issues cover was f*$@ing awesome, though. And, finally, I guess that scientist dude is going to try and go to Mars and take it from the mutants all by his lonesome? I guess Isca the Ultimate Deus ex machina will have something to say about that. Unless she's conveniently in another universe, or suddenly beatable because....piss poor writing.

And finally, there was the final issue of Immortal Hulk. I've got to admit, that was weird. And kind of anti-climactic. Still, they threw out some interesting little tidbits - like Sterns and Bruce possibly being distantly related. And at least they left it open for Leader to make a comeback if someone else wants to use him in the future. All in all, it was a good run. I'm almost sorry to see it end, but it's probably best that way.

Is it true that Ewing included the infamous Immortal Hulk meme?

"This will my final post....."

Philip,

I didn't see when I read it.

For me, Gamma Flight wasn't must read either. But I am glad we got Rick and Del in separate bodies now. Mostly because I want Rick to join up with Carol now.

I found Imposter a bit hard to follow...but it does read like some year one or two stories. So there's that.

My guess is Domovoy is something new...but I could be wrong. Still not sure how I feel about this series, but I'm willing to go the distance if only because Shanna is the most interesting piece of this.

I admit, I didn't see the swerve coming, but too am glad that Jen pulled it off. I mean maybe. Not sure. I am not surprised given how much of a failure that Namor's schemes have been there were some rumbles. My guess for next issue is that Jen absorbs the blast and this also make Namor a hero in the eyes of his people. Maybe. I dunno. Underwater Thunderstorm was indeed cool.

I dunno if I agree with that. Consider the following: Knull, the God of the Void, the God of the Symbiotes managed to take down more than few Celestials. Jean Grey punches him in the face with her mind. An actual Elder God. Now the question becomes, is Nightmare on that level or below it. That's still up in the air. As for Kelvin Heng/Feilong, I'm not sure he has the juice to hang with much of the X-men, much less some of the Great Ring members. As for Isca, I kind of doubt she's much involved due the fact she's not a factor some times. (I mean did you miss where she switched sides because she knew staying on side would make her lose??)

I'm with you about this ending not quite landing. There were elements here and there that were good/great, but overall the landing/ending of this series was...not quite there. I do also agree having Sterns and Banner distantly related is a good thing. It gives their bond as foes more depth.

I am a little confused at the possible relation, the shadows seemed to muddle with things. Did Sterns project the Hulk shadow when he threw his wife out.

Basically goes like this, Philip; Robert and his brother Samuel are ancestors of the current Leader. Robert's wife, via her maiden name, is a Banner. And while Samuel is mostly like the father, his child is a Stern by blood at least.

Does that help?

Yep. Thanks.

Scarab Sages

I've been thinking of the recent Superman "controversy" regarding the change to his "motto" - dropping "...the American Way" in exchange for "...a better tomorrow".

I can understand why some people might be upset about it. I can also understand why many more think the change is good. Personally, I fall into the latter camp, but probably for different reasons than most.

The way I see it, "Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow" is a good phrase to describe "The American Way". Not (sadly) how it actually is, but the ideal we strive for (or, at least, should strive for). We're rarely even close to being adequate on that, but I think we definitely have the potential to be closer. There are, of course, other countries who have this same potential. And many who do not. However, I don't live in those countries. I (amazingly) still love the USA. And so I ascribe that hope to the future of my country.

And what would a "better tomorrow" be, without the ability to hope for it?

Scarab Sages

Of course, that doesn't mean I'm going to regularly start buying Superman (or other DC) titles. Just because I like the new motto doesn't mean their writing, for the most part, no longer sucks ass.

I mean I like SOME of the writing...if only because Jonathan Kent clearly is going to hold on to Dad's mantle while he's not on Earth...

Scarab Sages

The new issue of FF was…..actually pretty good. The focus on Ben, Alicia, and their children was a welcome change. The meet-up between Torch and Spider-man was fun, as well. And I’ve been waiting to see more on Alicia’s turn as a puppet master. Interesting.

Phoenix Song Echo was interesting. Solid art. Decent story. It was nice seeing Forge again. I look forward to what they do with this character.

Death of Doctor Strange #2 was interesting as well. I like this sliver of time duplicate. And I look forward to seeing more of The Three Mothers (and their mystery child).

Legends of the Dark Knight once again has exceeded my expectations. This issue had not one, but TWO stories. And with two villains I don’t think we see enough of - Killer Croc and Solomon Grundy. I’m impressed yet again. This new series is proving worthy of its predecessor.

Thor - Throg and the (Pet) Avengers. That was sweet. I want more Throg in the future.

Trial of Magneto - just when you thought it couldn’t get weirder, giant kaiju attack, Northstar (briefly) kicks the s&@& out of Magneto, and Wanda seems to have been murdered by her future self.

Batman vs Bigby - since we’ve got Cindy? I’m guessing this takes place sometime before the end of the Fables series. I’m loving the back and forth macho-ness fight between Bats and Wolf, but I’d have to put my money on Bigby. Still, I look forward to their eventual team-up.

For me the main thing I enjoyed (besides Alicia and her dad reconnecting) was Reed's own inner child coming to light. But yeah, Spidey and Torch were great.

I was kind of horrified at how out of control Echo was when she pratically melted that dude. But at the same time I felt sympathy for her. Also I feel that the main big bad will be the Adversary. (Just call it a hunch.)

I liked the Mothers, but I think they might be too over powered for me to take seriously. That being said, the time sliver of Doctor Strange and his reactions were great.

Yeah seeing the Pet Avengers (not the classic lineup but most of the lineup) is great. I STILL want to know what's going on with Mjolnir. That and yes, more Throg.

Yeah future old woman Wanda appearing was startling...but honestly the star for me was Northstar. Just him handing out orders to Cap and Cyclop while also being a good teammate, makes me wonder if he might not be coming to the Avengers in an Uncanny way.

I don't care for Throg in particular, but various other 'pets' like Bats (Dr. Strange's ghost dog), Ebony (Agatha Harkness' black cat familiar that can turn into a black panther), Neils (Speedball's cat that has the same powers as he does), Lockheed (lil' dragon!), Old Lace (Gert's genetically engineered deinonychus) and Cosmo (telepathic/telekinetic Russian cosmonaut dog), oh yes!

I could have so much fun with a Pet Avengers title with those characters!

(Lockjaw, Zabu, Devil Dinosaur and Pizza Dog, sorry, maybe next time around? You're on the list after Jeff the Landshark, Bill the Lobster and Jonathan the Actual Wolverine...) :)

Honestly you need Throg because other than Lockjaw, he's the one with the most experience in situations. Also next time we need Mister Horse, Jane Foster's winged Horse. (Also Neils was the founding member of the Pet Avengers I thought...)

Scarab Sages

Wonder Woman: Black and Gold - this new issue was good. None of the stories sucked, and some were pretty damn good. The art was adequate to cool. If this series runs the same as the other two, there’s one more issue to go. One thing I’ve liked about this series is them pulling in old characters from throughout WW’s history. This issue had three or four, I think.

Daredevil was meh. I thought the action and plotting of this particular issue was kind of crappy. Still, I’m glad to see they’re nearing the end of this story arc (and the series itself, I believe).

SWORD - I was surprised to see the Shi’ar Imperial Guard get their asses handed to them so easily. By yet another incarnation of the Lethal Legion. I was sad to see James Hudson teaming up with the bad guys. And even more, I just want someone to punch a hole through Gyrich’s head. And now I’m wondering why Wiz-Kid is seemingly turning traitor, or if this is perhaps part of whatever plan Brand has that she thinks Krakoa won’t like.

Wolverine - I think it says poor things about the writers they can’t think of better things to do with him. They keep having to put X-Force stuff in his book. Still, it’s cool seeing Maverick again, and I kind of hope he sides with Krakoa permanently.

Inferno was….interesting. Now we know just how Destiny got resurrected, and just how clever Mystique can be. And there seemed to be hints they might be moving towards revealing whatever big secret goal Moira, Xavier, and Magneto have been working towards. And it seems Orchis has some big plan set to pop. Something involving the Sun. I wonder if they’ll try to use it as a weapon - kind of the ultimate killer heat ray, using their new tech to transmit that energy up close and personal.

Marauders was a fun issue, if for no other reason than showcasing how f*&%ing creative a bunch of bad ass mutants can get when they’re ejected into the vacuum of space.

Moon Knight - it was cool seeing Tigra, and I hope they keep her around more. I wasn’t familiar with the latest proxy villain Mr. Mystery Villain was using. Had to do a little research. The art, as always, is cool. I love this “priestly” aspect they’re going with now. It’s a welcome break from “he’s got mental problems”. Those problems are still there, but kind of on the back burner.

Picked up the new Batman The Long Halloween Special. Decent story, excellent art. Loeb and Sale still make a damn fine team.

I honestly felt it was less meh if only because now we have Matt OUT of prison (finally) As for the end of the series, yes it's the end of this part, but Devil's Reign will be more Daredevil and the Marvel U as Wilson Fisk cracks down on super heroes in NYC.

To be fair to the Imperial Guard, it appears this Lethal Legion was tailor made to fight against them. It was only because Storm showed up that it wasn't worse. Also yes, Gyrich is an ass. But I don't feel THAT sad for James considering he felt very...I dunno if betrayed is the word but scared by what the mutants just did. I honestly was not betting on Wiz Kid being the mole. But maybe Gyrich got him a good enough offer. As for Brand's plan...not sure Wiz Kid being a triple agent is in the cards, but who knows?

My concern about this book is while its clear Maverick isn't on team Krakoa, I'm not sure he's working against them in this instance. But I could be wrong.

The thing I think you might have missed seeing as you didn't mention it, is Colossus is actually an unknowing (and probably unwilling if he knew) double agent for his brother and the Russians. So there's that. I do think the gate test is kind of test firing to see if they can't pump some of the Sun through the gates and thus incinerate Krakoa and the gates. But I admit, I could be wrong.

I'm just glad this arc is resolved and we can move on towards other Marauder stuff in the future.

I also have missed seeing Tigra, especially after Avengers Academy and the fallout from Secret Invasion. I do agree this series has become more solid than even other volumes, if only because we can see not just how human Marc is, but how much he's changed over the years. (Also think that the guy that's bankrolling these D-list villains is Purple Man...but I could be wrong.)

Scarab Sages

Picked up Dark Knights of Steel on a whim. Good art. The story was…..adequate. I might keep going with it. At least one more issue, for sure.

Arkham City issue two was good. I’m enjoying the story and art. There’s just the right hint of chaos and madness in everyone.

Amazing Fantasy is having lots of twists and turns in the plot. Seems the Red King is the nominal bad guy, with his mysterious cloaked advisor probably as the real Big Bad. I feel I should know who that is - maybe Doom, but with only the magic side. The art is still blowing me away.

Scarab Sages

I keep seeing stuff about the upcoming Devil’s Reign story from Marvel. Honestly, the only thing that interests me about it is how they’re going to write Fisk getting away with just locking up all these heroes by using supervillains. It just doesn’t make sense.

A-zombie,

I'm sure he'll justify it via the fact he sees them as a threat and they did kind of almost destroy his city a couple of times.

Dark Knights for me was more Elseworlds than I was expecting, but also still within DC cannon considering the cast.

I'm still confused by this series, but at the same time, the cast itself is quite intriguing. We'll see how it goes and if Ten Fingered Man continues to lead the good doctor down the inevitable rabbit hole of madness.

I'm very confused and hesitant with this series due to how Uncle Ben is portrayed. That said, at least tonally, Steve and Spidey/Peter are in their right form.

Scarab Sages

Still not sure about this new story arc in Alien. It’s coming across as kind of like the bastard love child of Aliens and a story from the old Dark Horse comics where they had some religious fanatics purposely releasing xenomorphs on Earth.

Savage Avengers seems to be getting lazy as we (thankfully) near the end. I’ve come to think they had a set number of issues in mind, and have been stretching the story to fit that number.

The first issue of The Thing’s new miniseries was….weird. Love the dating app fairy. And the dude with the tires on his arms. The art is cool.

Batman: The Imposter continues to be an interesting re-imagining, Elseworlds Batman story. I’m digging the art, although it could use some work making what you’re seeing a bit clearer. Overall, I’m interested to see who the imposter ends up being.

I agree they need to end this series quickly, but considering they brought in Juggernaut back to help with the fight...it's something.

My thing about this new mini-series is apparently we have a new Death God to contend with...but otherwise not sure there was much to this. Other than seeing Herc and the cell that apparently the Hulk can't smash through.

Scarab Sages

Apparently, Marvel had a problem with their printer and this week saw a bunch of titles not make it to the shelves. Hell, I was missing a total of nine issues of various titles. Nevertheless, I still had plenty to read:

SWORD was a cool spot light on a character not rarely focused on - Whiz Kid. It brought up an interesting idea - I'd love to see his power go toe-to-toe with a Nimrod. Maybe that's why Brand is having him infiltrate Orchis. And I love the idea of her using Pym Particles to accompany him. That was...unexpected. I also like they (briefly) addressed why he's still in his chair, when (in theory) he could be fully healed by resurrection.

The new issue of Ka-Zar was kind of messy, at least towards the end, with the big fight. They certainly got their asses handed to them. At least the kid realizes he's been stupid.

Batman vs. Bigby - For some reason, I didn't realize the main villain appears to be Bookworm. Talk about a fairly obscure Bat villain. He did jumping from TV to comics before it was cool. I can't help but think Bigby allowed the many Robins to steer him towards the dump. Maybe now we'll finally get to see a knock-down, drag-out fight between our two heroes. Before they team up.

Another good one-shot episode of Legends of the Dark Knight. Simple and straightforward plot. Plenty of action. It's nice to see Azrael again. And nice to see Ra's. I kind of liked the art. The opening sequence of Batman entering the tomb was really cool. Very detective.

Finally, we have the identity (kind of) of the mystery villain. And it appears to be a new Zodiac, this time as a singular person (so far). Although I kind of saw it coming, with his oh so convenient leading Moon Knight to the surveillance room with the picture of ex-Hydra guy. And I'm really loving the bits with Mr. Knight and the psychiatrist. It opens the door for a lot of "book" to go with the "comic". Funny thing is, the first time I read through it, I totally missed the title of the issue, "Horoscope". If that had registered, the end page wouldn't have been a surprise at all. I'm not sure why Zodiac has the chain and lock around his neck, other than to make for an interesting visual. Loved the name dropping of Crawley, Gena, etc. All in all, the series continues to kick ass.

I also picked up The Last Ronin Design Archive. It's a cool look into the art and character design for this excellent series.

A-zombie,

With regard to the SINGULAR Zodiac, he's not actually THAT new. He appeared in Dark Reign as a guy that was doing evil stuff while Norman Osborn was around. Mostly to show up the original group. (Yes he had the Zodiac Key.) So for me this is a nice throw back for a character that was essentially a throw-away.

I admit, I hate it when other people are right. Brand totally played me and thus Gyrich using Whiz Kid. Though I am confused...why is he wearing panties?

Yeah this series is very messy for me, but hopefully we'll get clarity as the series continues.

Scarab Sages

I’m pretty sure this week’s issue of Wonder Woman: Black & Gold is the last one in the series. The first story was silly. The rest of the stories were adequate. The art ranged from pretty good to not horrible. Overall, it was a very hit or miss series. The Superman and Batman ones had fewer let downs.

The first issue of the new Hulk series was…..interesting. Not sure if I like the idea of Banner being more of a threat. Still, I’ll give it a few issues to see where they go with it. The art was pretty cool.

Death of Doctor Strange continues to be an excellent story. Well-written. Good art. I’m loving seeing Clea again, and I like her current look.

The new story arc in Thor looks to be finally getting to whatever they’ve been hinting at with Mjolnir. I was a bit disappointed this issue had no Throg. I’m just starting to wonder how many universe threatening baddies they can come up with the challenge All-Father Thor.

Wolverine has been kind of a let down. The writing on this current series is nowhere near as good as some of the past stuff they’ve done with him. I think, in part, it’s because they keep tying his book up with either clandestine Krakoa stuff, or vampires. They need some more variety, and perhaps a better writer. I like the Jeff Baxter character. He makes a good supporting cast.

X-Men - nice spotlight on Polaris. She certainly kicks ass. “To me, my fillings.” Now they need to do Sunfire unleashed. I’m really getting annoyed at this Doctor Stasis character. I wish they’d finish up the Ben Urich sub-plot. Just rip the damnable bandaid off and get it over with. One thing I did love - the letter from Lorna to Northstar. I hadn’t been overly familiar with his character over the years, but after seeing him kick ass in Trial of Magneto, I did some reading up on his powers. He’d certainly make a kick ass member of the X-Men, so I hope they bring him onto the team next time there’s a roster change.

With regards to Donny's take on Bruce, it's hardly that new. Banner as a villain (or anti-hero) was a staple part of the run after Fear Itself. IE Hulk cut out banner's consciousness and had Doom do the surgery and cloning. So while this is not new, what is new is that it seems Bruce wants to explore more than before. And thus turns his attention to making sure he can via body modifications on himself...or rather the Hulk.

I do like this stuff on the Three Mothers and of course their kid. Kind of on the nose about him being Galactus big headed, but at the same time, different. I am not convinced though that even with aid, Karl was the one that killed Strange. Clea was/is good.

What I found interesting is they referred to a number of cosmic entities/Elder Gods as titans. That being said, I am curious how this shakes with what Thor is going to find on the other side of this.

I honestly was fine because I was unclear who or what the threat actually was. But I did chuckle when the bug that was used ended up playing Johnny Cash to annoy Maverick's new employer. I am sad though that it seems that Delores is now dead. But yeah, Jeff Baxter is neat.

The Polaris spot light (along with the letter) was a nice thing to have. Honestly I'm not sure they can finish up the Ben Ulrich stuff quickly, primarily because it ties so deeply into the current X-men status quo. But I do agree it's time for Jean-Paul to join the big leagues again.

Scarab Sages

On a whim, I picked up the Gotham City Villains 100-page giant. The Danny Devito story was silly, but with good art. The Poison Ivy story was good, but with childish art. The Mad Hatter story could have been better, if they'd left out Damien. The remaining stories were all pretty good.

Avengers Was all over the map, but it looks like the Mephisto stuff they hinted at in Age of Khonshu is finally coming to a head. And, of course there's a Doom Supreme. I'm cautiously pessimistic on how this story will turn out. I did enjoy the back-up story with Thor and Arthur.

The newest story in Fantastic Four was...completely idiotic. I weep for the obviously lost sanity of the editor who thought this was a good idea to go to print.

It seems like forever since the first issue of Phoenix Song came out. I like seeing the Adversary again, but he was written and drawn much better in back in the day, in Uncanny X-Men. My one real problem - Phoenix is a cosmic entity, so why is Echo still limited by the need to read lips?

Batman: The Detective, finally finished up. It was a pretty decent Batman story. I'm sorry, though, even the best armor on your hand wouldn't have stopped that bullet so thoroughly.

Final issue of this latest volume of Daredevil was...meh. Seems like all they were really doing was setting up for this big Fisk making his power play (again) mini-series.

New Mutants - thank the gods they seem to have (for now) resolved this Shadow King nonsense. I think they're overdoing it a bit on these mutant circuits. It can be cool an all, but too many of them just seem to be a kind of deus ex machina.

I think there's now one more issue of Trial of Magneto, and I'm kind of glad. It's been interesting, especially watching Magneto get his gluteus maximus handed to him by Northstar, but so far it's been long on magic shenanigans and short on trial.

Marauders - HOLY CRAPCAKSE ON FIRE!!! They finally brought Harry Leland back to the land of the living. AND they finally confirmed Shinobi's parentage. To top it all off, we got to see Iceman kick the poop out of a drunk Fin Fang Foom. This is, without a doubt, one of the best of all the X-books. My one question - what the hell was up with the ambassador from the UK and his evil villain cape?

The villains stuff was nice, but honestly for me, the Talia story was the highlight, after all the crap we went through with Leviathan.

I dunno about ALL over, but it certainly covered a lot of ground. I mean if nothing else, now Jen is back to be Jen instead of Roid Jen. And yes, the Council of Red is nice, but the Multiversal Masters of Evil is pretty slick. (Especially after Doom murders Orb). I'm more optomistic in terms of maybe getting some clarity on the whole "Is Lady Firehair Thor's mom". (I still say no...but what do I know?)

I honestly was fine with this story, mostly because it was less super hero fight and more legal drama.

I guess the reason Maya doesn't have hearing is because she decided to not bother with using the Force to heal herself. I'm honestly fine with the artwork and how the Adversary is portrayed in this series.

It was meh but I was taken aback by the conversation with Matt and Reed. That was unexpected. I will agree this is a setup for Devil's Reign. But hopeful the series (and side stuff) play out better.

I'm glad for the happy ending, but honestly this wasn't that good. Now the end of Fear State. That was more interesting.

I too am glad the Shadow King has been put to bed for now. Now we'll see what's next for the new mutants. Though honestly I wasn't too thrilled with the artwork in this.

I'm glad too but not for the same reason. Mostly because now we might get some answers about who killed Wanda. While it was intriguing to see Wanda (past, present and possible future) aligning herself. (Hell the fact she self-resurrected is scary enough.)

Honestly not that impressed by either Leland or Shinobi's confirmed parentage. It was just not worth it to me. I will say seeing Iceman kick Foom around was different but I'm not sure in a real fight that Foom would lose this badly. (The UK embassador is the same dick that helped murder Pete Wisdom. He's Clan Akkaba.)

Legendary Marvel And DC Comics Artist George Perez Reveals He Has Inoperable Cancer

Sad news!

I am deeply sorry to hear that. I love Perez work in many different books. (but especially Wonder Woman)

Scarab Sages

Dark Knights of Steel continues to be an interesting reimagining of the DCU as a fantasy setting. I kind of like the idea of Kal-El having a sister. And one with a bit of a dark streak. I look forward to hopefully seeing this world fleshed out a bit more.

I picked up the first issue of Devil’s Reign on a lark. Not sure I’m buying the story of hunting heroes being so easy. I can see where he’d have some in the government on his side, but not enough. And not enough of the public. And I never really liked the Stromwyn characters. To me they cheapen Fisk. I’ll probably skip the rest of the series.

Arkham City continues to be excellent. Solid writing, with the Doctor being an excellent, well-written character. I continue to like the art as well. I’d like to see this Dani draw some more stuff.

Amazing Fantasy ended kind of weird. The overall story was…meh. The art, all of it, was incredible. I’d love to see another series, but maybe with a better writer.

Inferno is also being weird. I really wanted to have some sympathy for Mystique and Destiny, but now I just want to see Nimrod disintegrate both of them. Along with Xavier and Magneto, since they appear to be working towards ruling the humans. Then maybe someone sensible can take over. In the end, I’m still really liking this new status quo for mutants, and want to see Krakoa continue for many years to come.

Dark Knights is different enough but still in the same kind of vein as Kingdom Come too. I am also enjoying that Kal has a sister (Who apparently is in a relationship with Diana no less) but is clearly less...morally inflexible compared to him.

I honestly am interested in this, even if the stakes might not change. What I am curious about is if some how if Zeb's kids MIGHT be involved in terms of maybe the Stromwyns might be using them to manipulate things. (Also Zeb isn't dead.) I am also think I'd MUCH rather have Luke Cage run for Mayor against Wilson than Iron Man.

This series is weird but considering it's about Arkham, that's kind of the point. So I'm willing to give it more latitude than some other series.

Amazing Fantasy was ALSO weird. I mean how the hell can you have the dead show up and NOT have some other Supernatural guys involved. (Though the ending with Wolverine was interesting) If there is another series, I hope they do something else.

What struck me and surprised me was the fact the Karima Shapandar we thought we knew is actually a future version of her self that's from one of Moira's past lives that basically DL herself into...herself. (Also founded Orchis...kind of.) As for Mystique and Destiny...eh. I mean I liked the snark that Irene gave the Cuckoos about how their future isn't as united as they think. As for who takes over the reins...I'm kind of betting on Doug, Warlock and Krakoa themselves to start taking the reins. I mean they are the reason this place exists right? Also it seems that at least some of the future, the mutants win some too. So who knows what the future truly is.

So the Hellions series ended this week with number 18, I think, and dayum, that was a great series, with a bunch of mooks I mostly didn't care about at all (and even a few I actively disliked), and I am just amazed at how it turned into, IMO, the best darn X-book of the last year and a half, and nearly all of those (IMO) losers turned out to have some real potential, and are now characters I've gotten invested in.

I have no idea how this book even worked. Some sort of Stockholm Syndrome? Addictive mind-altering chemicals in the ink? Amazing writing and good art?

One of those things, for sure. :)

Wasn’t Nanny in that book? She is a low level telepath……

Scarab Sages

Came across this on The Book of the Face...

Vibration
Nothing rests. Everything moves. Everything vibrates. At the most fundamental level, the Universe and everything which comprises it is pure vibratory energy manifesting itself in different ways. The Universe has no “solidity”, as such. Matter is merely energy in a state of vibration.

It got me started thinking - why isn't Rictor considered an Omega level mutant? Even if you consider his power to only affect the earth itself (or other celestial bodies subject to tectonic forces), that still seems to cover the kind of power level considered Omega. Yet, I don't recall seeing him on the list.

Of course, it might be that his power level could continue to expand the more he practices with it. Kind of like Iceman has grown into it.

Set,

I think the reason it work was because they weren't the X-men. They were kind of the rejects in terms of what the X-men might accept. Also yes, some of the characters and their growth have been quite interesting. Though the return of Maddie is probably the most interesting to me.

A-zombie,
Yes she is. (She also got resurrected after dying in the last book.) But not sure that had anything to do with her success.

As for Rictor, I think the reason he's not Omega level is primarily because he's never shown that power set before. Iceman, sure, Storm definitely. Will he grow into it? Maybe. But then again he's starting to do magic so...who knows.

While I'm down for him developing some new twists on his old vibratory powers, like being able to phase matter (like Kitty Pryde) or perform some odder stunts (dimension travel?), Marvel has been writing him as a garden-variety earth-manipulator for over a decade now, and moved away from describing his powers as having anything to do with vibrational states or vibratory blasts / waves. The same has happened with Avalanche, it seems. Any power that causes vibrations or tremors seems to turn into 'earth control' for simplicity over time.

DC seems to be better at keeping vibratory characters (Vibe, the Flashes) distinct from elemental earth controllers (Terra, Elysion, Shakedown, etc.).

Indeed, I think Set has the right of it. But also Rictor is doing magic now.

Avalanche! I don't recall seeing him in forever. Last I remember reading, he was being gutted by Lady Deathstrike on Muir Island.

A-zombie,

He's probably being stuck in the same line as like 20 other 90s mutants. (Not that he's one of those but you know...)

Ye, gods! I'm pretty happy that Savage Avengers seems to be at the end. Kulan Gath has been defeated (in a way that probably could have been done about 10 issues ago), and all we (hopefully) seem to have left is a tying up loose ends issue.

The Thing series continues the weirdness, but I like it. It's not the greatest art in the world, but it's getting the job done.

Ka-Zar - two fights against the Big Bad, and two ass whippings. I guess somehow they'll pull out a miracle win in the end.

Defenders also continues to be kind of weird, but I've been enjoying the story. The different cosmos they've shown has been pretty cool. I'm looking forward to seeing who's wearing the Eternity Mask.

The new Hulk series is very....different. I'm really loving the art. The idea of using the Hulk as a kind of spaceship, fitted up with tech to make it work, is kind of cool. I imagine (and hope) it's the kind of situation they won't try to drag on too long.

There was finally a new issue of BRZRKR. I think it had been a month or two. As always, I love Garney's art. The story's grown a bit disjointed, I think, but I'm still finding it interesting. It'll make a good movie, if they ever decide to do it.

Batman: The Imposter is done. Overall, it was a decent elseworlds story. Solid art, though it could be a little off at times.

Yeah I'm glad that Savage Avengers is done, but the fact they had Shummy do it for them is a little weird... But at least now with how Conan fixed Kulan Gath (for now) is good.

Yeah this is a weird series, but so is Ka-Zar too. The difference is I generally enjoy Ben Grimm more than Kevin Plundar (though Shanna is still pretty sweet.)

I'm sure the writers will pull something out of their butts to save the Plunder family. Maybe even redeem Matthew.

I honestly am too enjoying this because after The Ultimate series showed us more about the different Cosmoses that came before, this series has brought new life to those ideas. Plus yes, I hope we get the identity of Masked Rider out of the way soon.

Well considering that Donny Cates is writing this series, I'm not surprised at how weird it's gotten. But I am curious to see what this one eyed Bruce Banner is about.

I think knowing Keanu as we do, a movie is already in the pipeline. But yeah it's an interesting story to be sure.

I wasn't that invested in this compared to some Elseworlds Batman stories. But it was serviceable.

I was hoping Phoenix Song would grow on my a bit more, but the story feels kind of dragging and pointless. Thankfully, I think there's only one issue left. Art is still solid.

King Conan is the new series. Interesting first issue. Always love seeing Thoth Amon. I'm liking the art.

Avengers - good to see a story where Phoenix is kicking a bit of ass. Still not sure I like the way they're using the Deathloks. I kind of prefer when there was just one. I'm wondering who this evil Phoenix is.

The new issue of Wolverine was....interesting. I like when he's just kind of on his own. I still dislike them mixing too much of the other X-books in with this one.

Trial of Magneto wasn't so much a "trial". Then again, it completely was, depending on what the kind of trial is being discussed. Overall, it was an interesting story, basically designed to redeem the Scarlet Witch in the eyes of mutantdom. It'll be nice if they can have someone that powerful on their side.

Just when I was starting to like Brand, SWORD goes and reveals she's actually a villain. What's worse, she's the kind who's written as obnoxiously smarter than everyone else. More importantly, Storm proves once again just how bad ass she is. And then there's the mystery of Orbis Stellaris. Who's behind the mask? My own thinking is someone previously associated with the Lethal Legion. Could be the original Porcupine. It would be unexpected, and I think he was an engineer. Although I think they're saying this is a chick. I look forward to seeing who it is.

Batman vs Bigby - and they finally teamed up. I'm glad. Now we get to see them take on the villainous....Bookworm! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA... It's funny, but if anyone could make him seem threatening, it's Bill Willingham.

Legends of the Dark Knight was another two-in-one issue. The first story was mildly amusing, but ultimately forgettable. The second was much better. Both had excellent art.

Moon Knight - for a dude who's been kicking lots off ass, he sure got his handed to him by the new Zodiac. Then Hunter's Moon comes to the rescue, following it up with an origin story (which was really neat) and religious healing ritual. Cool. I've got to say, I'm really loving the character of Doctor Badr. Since I've always been a huge fan of "passing the torch", I'd love to see them one day kill of Spector and make Hunter's Moon the prime Fist of Khonshu. As always, I'm loving the art.

Batman: One Dark Knight - new Black Label miniseries written and drawn by Jock. I'd heard his name, but can't rightly say I have any of his work (though it's possible). I liked the first issue, both writing and art. Here's hoping he can join the hallowed halls of really good writer/artist combinations. I was really digging the map of Gotham.

The only worthwhile gift I got this year -

X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills

This is an oversized (the only downside to it), “extended edition”, with new material bookending the main story, plus a bunch of other art added in.

The other comic book related gift I received was a novelization of the Dark Phoenix Saga. Not exactly what I had in mind when I included it on my gift ideas list. That’s why I should only rely on myself when it comes to comics related stuff.

One issue left? I thought there was one more...but I do agree it's a muddled story. Hopefully it will be redeemed at the end.

Anything new Conan is more interesting than just repeat Conan.

I'm pretty sure the evil phoenix is mixture of Jean Grey and Deathbird..but I will admit I could be wrong. Regardless, I'm glad to see more of Thor trying to figure this out...along with maybe what the new Multiversal Avengers might be about.

I honestly wasn't that taken by this issue, mostly because I didn't see a reason for Wolverine to get involved when other mutants could have handled this problem.

I was a little shocked by the fact Toad took the fall, at first. But then after thinking it through, it made sense. Mostly I'm glad to see Wanda (not a mutant still, even after the ress protocols used) help to bring back Thunderbird. (Along with Northstar's daughter.) We'll see what the ramifications are for Magneto and the rest down the road.

I honestly don't see Brand as a villain, more like a very morally grey character that has proven the side she fights for is more her own. I will admit to being shocked she basically fridged Gyrich...but then again he was more a liability. What I am wondering is who is Orbis Stellaris actually is...and my working theory is the Elder of the Universe, the Profiteer...but I could be wrong. I don't think the use of the Lethal Legion should be seen in that light but consider that her brother, the Grandmaster DID have his own. Also I think Original Porcupine is kind of a stretch.

I do agree with the fact they gave Badir a great backstory and kind of a nice rivalry going with Marc. But mostly I'm enjoying this series for the fact Marc is trying something different and kind of succeeding.

For whatever reason, I picked up the second issue of Devil’s Reign. I think it was mostly because otherwise I’d only have had two books to read this week. The art is pretty solid. And I can at least see how Fisk could potentially be so dangerous. They’ve set it so he’s been acquiring dossiers on people for years, and he’s turning that info over to others. He also seems to have access to the Purple Man’s power through some Doc Ock tech. Still, none of this works without a lot of complicity from the federal government. And that would make the Marvel Universe a lot more complex.

Death of Doctor Strange continues to impress me. I think it’s one of the more solid and entertaining Strange stories in years. The more I see of them, the more I like The Peregrine Child and his Three Mothers. That’s a cool concept. I loved Mordo’s little speech. And seeing Clea is still awesome.

The more I see of the DC Black Label, the more impressed I am. I picked up first book of the new Swamp Thing: Green Hell series, since I saw Lemire was writing it. He’s a pretty decent storyteller, although he’s got room for improvement. Mahnke’s art is pretty kick ass. And I’m occasionally a sucker for a good devastated-future-Earth story. That the Parliaments are all teaming up to wipe out humanity is….interesting. And, of course, Constantine is there.

Honestly I am wondering where the end game is for Fisk. Also I have this sinking feeling Tony is going to do something rash because he didn't like the fact that everyone voted for Luke instead of him. (Even though Luke TOTALLY makes sense!) As for federal complicity, hello, ORCHIS calling... I mean that's pretty much a nod and wink there. Regardless, I am curious about the Elektra stuff coming down thanks to Fisk.

I do agree that the Death of Doctor Strange has been very good, especially with the Galactus knock off and his female Heralds. But I was kind of bummed/let down that after it was clear Mordo DIDN'T kill Strange, that Kaecillus had to be the only logical choice. I mean it makes sense...but it's still kind of meh. Clea is awesome and she's going to be even MORE awesome thanks to her taking over Steven's role as Sorcerer Supreme.

This was probably one of the few Black Labels I truly enjoyed. I'm looking forward to more and especially now that John is here. (Also wondering where the rest of the heroes are...)

Dark Knights of Steel - damn, Kal-El’s sister is kind of psycho. Either that, or she’s being controlled. I really liked King Jefferson, and was sad to see him die.

Thor - soooo….Mjolnir is and evil chick now? Weird, but okay. I haven’t been terribly disappointed yet with Cates writing.

Arkham City - I never really liked that Professor Pyg character. I thought he was kind of idiotic. So that was a kind of disappointing end to the issue, and a silly hiccup in what’s otherwise been a pretty cool mini series.

Inferno - sooooo…..Moira was still a bad guy? And the machines hate everyone? Seems that were the only points of the entire series. I was also extremely disappointed that Mystique still lived. I’ve really come to dislike her as an obnoxious ass. Also, I wonder if the writers ever realize how mutants really don’t stand a chance. All the machines have to do is mass produce those little disc power dampeners. I look forward to the brain farts they’ll put out if they ever dare throw the machines up against the unbeatable Arrakii mutant.

Speaking of Arakko and unbeatable. For a bunch of supposedly bad ass mutants from demon world, they sure were ready to roll over and play dead for some out of the woodworks Uber human scientist. Unfortunately, I think the writers are going to have to get either increasingly ridiculous, or ignore some previous writing, to get themselves out of the hole they’ve dug.

Scarab Sages

And I hope they’re going to clear things up next issue with regard to Captain Krakoa, because most of what they put in this issue was clear as mud. And kind of pointless.

I honestly think that Kal's sister is more going off because of her dad's death. But who knows? Not really that into this series.

Actually I got clarity thanks to another source. Mjolnir is being controlled by *drum roll* The God Storm. Yes that Jason Aaron creation. Apparent with all of Odin's enchantments going boink, this allowed it to come back. Some how.

Not sure I agree with only because I still couldn't figure out who was helping Pyg. That being said I was/am enjoying Nocturna and Doctor Phosphorus' attempt to be normal.

Moira is a bad guy, if only because she still has a hate on for mutants, even if she was (temporarily) one of them. As for the machines being unbeatable, I mean if Magik summons demons...can power dampeners work on them? That's kind of where I am with that. What I am clapping my hands at is Doug and his long game. Clearly he knows he can't trust Mystique and Destiny, but at the same time with the backing of his wife, his best friend and now his OTHER new best friend, I don't doubt he'll do fine.

With regards to Captain Krakoa, I think the reasoning for Scott being this character is primarily because they had to create a plausible reason to keep Scott from being seen. If only because Charles couldn't mind wipe the planet without some serious consequences. Which is why they just mind wiped Ben Ulrich instead. As for the human wiping the floor with ONE Arraki mutant...I mean yeah it's a little stretch, but I figure if he can barf out Gamma...that might be a strong reason. As for why they can't do anything, I mean technically moons aren't considered part of a planet any more than our Moon would be ours. So for Feilong, terraforming it doesn't mean he OWNS Mars so much as he owns a planetoid. That's at least how I see it.

Scarab Sages

I was amazed they didn’t drag out the family court drama in Fantastic Four another half-dozen issues or so. Honestly, the best part of the two issues was She-Hulk getting her lawyer on. I think I’m pretty much done with this series. Unless they suddenly decide to get a better writer.

Savage Avenger - I think this was the last issue. It seems that way. Thank Crom!

The Thing miniseries continues to just be awesomely weird. Maybe they should just give him his own permanent series, with the same creative team. I’d love to see them take on Married with Kids Thing.

Daredevil Woman Without Fear - I’m still loving Elektra as Daerdevil, and this fight with Kraven could be awesome (even if he SHOULD be dead). The art is great.

King Conan - still loving the art. The story is….interesting. He’s definitely better in his own world, than the modern one.

Marauders was all over the place, but I guess that’s what you get when you suddenly decide to radically change your cast. This is the downside to having so many x-books, with so many mutants, but so few that are truly popular. I loved the bit with Iceman kicking the crap out of Frost Giants. Personally, I think Kate would have been better off going to Doom for help. At least you know for certain he can’t be trusted.
