Loved seeing that old buddy-buddy between Peeper and Magneto. And they way Cortez was trying to suck up, but got rebuffed, was fun. That dude always was a douchnugget.

I think that was my favorite scene of Magneto in this entire DoX/HoX storyline so far. He's been kind of a distant dickish figure (particularly to Lorna, IMO), up until now, this is the first time he's shown any sort of enthusiasm or (ahem) humanity.

And yes, seeing Cortez get shaded was fun. And with at least a half-dozen other 'power enhancer' type mutants running around the Marvel Universe (the most memorable and interesting of which, IMO, would be the young Chance, from the Fallen Angels series way back in the 80s), he's not nearly as indispensible as he thinks...

Batman Black and White was something I picked up on a whim. I was a big fan of the series they put out several years back. This first issue was mostly okay. The one story I didn't really like was the one called Sisyphus. I just didn't think it made much sense. The artwork on the first story was weird, but interesting. Not sure if I'll pick up issue 2 or not. That one will have a Tom King story, and I dislike him.

Thor - man that s@$#'s crazy. So, since Donald Blake seems to be a magical creation, he's somehow gained the ability to absorb the strength and magics of others. Watching him tear through Asgard was pretty weird, until the reveal that he essentially had Jormungand's power. Hopefully, Jane will kick Donald's ass next issue.

The new Conan story is...weird. Seems that possession by an evil sword is something that even the mighty Conan can fall victim to. I like him travelling to all these distant lands, though.

Finally, Marauders! Sebastian Shaw gets his punishment, and big time. To be honest, I'm not sure what I was expecting, but that wasn't it. Lockheed's own bit of revenge was pretty sweet. All in all, it was satisfying. Still, you know he won't take this sitting down. His own payback is going to escalate things to the point I imagine they may have to kill him for good.

I think for Daredevil, we'll see a goodly amount of DD in jail, but I don't think we WON'T see Elektra being DD while Matt's in jail. Mostly because it seems to be set up for that.

Honestly, this was the most brutal (in a good way) issue of Savage Avengers by far. And yes, the wood chipper was pretty epic. I think more the fact the dragon turns human because he seems like that kind of arrogant guy.

Yes Firehair is probably a distant relative/ancestor of Jean's. But how far remains to be see. I do agree they are retconning mutants MUCH further than I'd like. Mostly because Apocalypse proved he's the best at being old school. Mostly it's interesting to see that Firehair, not Odin, was the one that decided to bring the first incarnation of the Avengers together.

While I'm uncertain just WHAT the mysterium is, it's clear that the teleporters STOLE something from the White Hot Room. Which is generally not a good idea, but I guess Brand needs the firepower. Possibly. I also agree, this was the best illustration of Magneto and also with Peeper having a bonding time together. We'll see how it turns out. Also agree, Coretz being shaded was great, but he's never been my favorite guy...much like...

I honestly wasn't sure what the revenge angle MIGHT be, but I am glad to see it finally happen. It might not be enough in some peoples mind, but seeing Shaw having to lose some of his 'handsomeness" is a turn.

I can't say I LIKE this Donald Blake...mostly because I was under the impression Donald Blake was still just a head sleeping and dreaming. But yeah, the fact he tore apart and stole Jormungand's power and then did the same to other Thors...is pretty telling about his construct nature.

I'm almost convinced the Nightstar might be some homage to Stormbringer...but then again it might be something else. Regardless, I hope Conan figures out he needs to get rid of that like a hole in the head...

Scarab Sages

New Fantastic Four was more of the same meh. I figured out why I dislike Valeria. She's arrogant, without having done much to be arrogant about. She's kind of like a female Damien Wayne. Then we have poor Franklin. First they take away his powers (yes, I'm sure he'll get them back at some opportune moment), then they reverse decades of canon by making him not a mutant, and now they stuff him in some old Iron Man armor just to try and make him seem useful. Sad. Also, it seems to me this Griever is acting too much like a villain and less like the abstract entity she's supposed to be. I'm surprised some other, more powerful abstract entity hasn't smacked her ass back down to earth, so to speak.

I made the mistake of buying Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Crisis on Infinite Earths. That was so horribly written, I feel I should apologize to my eyes for making them look at even one page.

Savage Avengers - now that was far more entertaining then the first time they fought the dragon. In fact, that first fight seems like a wasted issue. It was a good fight, with some decent strategy. I kind of liked it when Juggernaut picked him up by the tail and swung him around a bit.

Batman's Grave was a lot of build up for a kind of disappointing ending. And now I'm down to just one DC comic (which is going away after next issue).

Immortal Hulk - I'll admit, I liked watching Thing beat up on Hulk a little. The bits in the diner, with Thing going on about his Bar Mizvah and such, were really interesting.

Wolverine: Black, White & Blood was another fun issue. Good art all around. The story with Sabretooth was okay. I really liked the story with Arcade. And while I love a good Madripoor story, the last one seemed to be missing a lot.

The latest issue of New Mutants was okay. So they're going to use part of the island like a real life Danger Room, where young mutants can hone their abilities. I get they're trying to delve more into this "synergy" idea, but I thought the demonstrations they gave were kind of weak. And now we have Amahl Farouk on the island? I honestly don't see him causing trouble going well for him. That opening sequence with him though, makes me wonder if Farouk and the Shadow King are two different entities. I'm not up on his more recent history.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh Karma is going to have a bone to pick with him...

With regards to Farouk, it's been mentioned earlier that the entity of the Shadow King is indeed separate from himself. However it's kind of like possession, it's never truly done with Farouk nor does killing one kill the other...usually.

Honestly I think the reason the Griever hasn't been smacked around is probably due to all the chaos and upheaval in the multiverse. I mean between Knull, Empyre, and the death/return of the Olympians, it's been pretty wild out in space. But we'll see. Honestly I'm glad they gave Franklin his own suit. It was cool.

I will agree, this one Tales of the Dark Multiverse wasn't as good as some others...but it was far from the worst.

I'm still curious why Strange wanted Conan to have the second eye. But at least the dragon won't be bothering anyone.

I liked this issue, but mostly because while Ben started out kind of out of character, that got fixed quick enough. (btw you should definitely turn in for the One shot involving Knull and Immortal Hulk. It's worth the read.)

I think my major problem right now is there's a lot of upheaval in Kraoka after X of Swords that's hard to tell what exactly is what. But I doubt Farouk is doing good.

Last issue of the Maestro mini-series from Peter David is done. It was a quick, but decent finale. I know they're going to follow it up with another mini-series, but I think I'll skip that one. This one was okay, but I don't need to spend money on another 5 (or so) issues of "How the Hulk became more of a dick."

Batman Beyond was also a finale, which makes me sad. I thought it was a great book, with lots of potential for the future. It was certainly better than probably 95% of the other crap that DC has sullied so much paper with. Wonder Woman looked hot, as usual. The only potential good thing is the hint they may follow this up with maybe some Justice League Beyond.

Last God continues to be a good book, but I've heard it will also be coming to an end soon. If that's true, it would reduce the number of DC titles I get to zero. That's fine by me, since most of their works sucks ass these days. Still, I don't think I've dropped to zero DC titles in all the 30+ years I've been collecting.

The King-Size Conan was a great book. All the art was great, but especially so for the Chris Claremont story. That art was by Roberto de La Torre. They should give him more work. A lot more. I'd love to see them do some more books like this.

I'm okay with more Maestro if only because it might show us who else in Space Marvel might still be out there.

BB finale was good. I don't think it will be the ultimate end of the series...but with Future thingie we'll see.

Last God was solicited as a 12 issue mini-series. So I'm not surprised they're ending. I'm just glad it's on a high note.

King Size was good...but I'm not sure it was the best.

Scarab Sages

Avengers has now started this Phoenix fighting tournament. Interesting first round, with Doom vs Cap. The end to the fight was pretty cool. And it looks like Namor is being a d+&$@ead.....again. That last page had only a few characters I didn't recognize.

I picked up the Return of Vengeance one-shot for the sole reason that I saw Mackie and Saltares involved. I never particularly liked the character to begin with, but with those two on the case (especially Saltares art), I figured it could be cool. And I wasn't disappointed. The story was pretty straight forward and the art kicked ass. Now I find myself hoping Badilino becomes the true heir to the Ghost Rider mantle, since the only good things about the Robbie Reyes character were (a) the car, and (b) his TV appearances.

X-Men had been going pretty well up until this whole X of Swords fiasco. Now we've got a new island with a couple million mutants living on it, all of whom have been raised on the Apocalypse philosophy. And they're led by a character who probably takes the cake for most annoying power ever - Isca the Unbeaten. Seriously, all you can ever do is have her be menacing in the background, because anyone who fights her loses. So what's the point? Although, at least now they have someone they can throw at Nimrod, when it inevitably shows up. Still, this is going to open up a whole new can of evil mutant worms. But I do like this idea of annual voting on the X-Men roster. That could prove....interesting.

So, I know the little girl is the Wolverine clone. And I think the kid is his son by...someone. I wasn't collecting X stuff (or much Marvel) when they introduced them, so I'm not terribly familiar with them. Nor do I care to be. Still, it seems the two of them and Logan are now one big, happy pack? Omega Red is such a dick. Maybe he'll defect to the other island. This issue also made me realize we don't see enough of Beast anymore. I was also wondering when they'd bring Maverick back into this. He's a mutant, as I recall, so I was surprised Wolverine hadn't tried to recruit him early on. And it was nice to see the Patch persona back in action. I always loved his time in Madripoor. That city was the inspiration for a recent map I did with Campaign Cartographer.

The roster for the Phoenix tournament is as follows: Doctor Doom, Namor, Hyperion, Nighthawk (both from the newest iteration of Squadron Supreme), Red Widow, The Orb; (mostly villains); Jen Walters aka Hulk/She-Hulk, Moon Girl and Red Devil, American Eagle/Jason Strongbow (member of Agents of Wakanda), Echo (Maya Lopez), Luke Cage, Dane Whitman aka The Black Knight, Man Thing, Shanna the She-Devil, Zabu (companion to her and her husband Ka-Zar), Wolverine (of course) Shang-Chi, Captain America, Jane Foster (as Valkyrie) and finally...Howard the Duck. So yeah...

Eh. I'm a little tired of the "aggressive 90s" characters so this one wasn't as good...but it was decent.

I think for now, the fact there will be a democratic process to selecting the X-men does mean we'll get a better roster than average.

The girl is Gabby aka Honey Badger (her first name and the one I prefer over Scout), actually a clone of Laura who is a clone of Wolverine...so kind of his daughter, but more like not. Daken is Wolverine's son by some Japanese woman he met. He's still kind of dick.

I suspect Krakoa/X-Series is going to get wrecked by Mystique due to them not bringing back Destiny. Easy enough out to end the series and reboot.

Philip,

Possibly, but I think that's MUCH further down the road. Like at least next year.

Scarab Sages

Immortal Hulk - I've always thought that Gyrich was a complete dick, and this appearance didn't disappoint. I loved the way Samson/Sasquatch reacted, though. Very chillingly cool. And now Jackie McGee is a gamma mutate. Interesting. Her powers appear more mental, like Leader. Speaking of which, that douchnozzle seems to be getting what he deserved. Looking forward to seeing the U-Foes in action.

The Chris Claremont anniversary special was...okay. Adequate story. Great art, especially by the always awesome Sienkiewicz.

Thor - Donald's still bat s++$, but at least he didn't try to kill Jane. Yet. Thori is still awesome. Poor Red Norvell. Frog Thor apparently does not f*+@ around. Donnie boy forgot that, despite their weird appearance, frogs are predators. Seems that he and Lockjaw are going to have a nice throw down with crazy man.

SWORD was a crossover with that stupid Symbiote story. Nevertheless, it had some cool s!+~. Mentallo is a promising character, in that they can have some real fun with him, I think. Fabian Cortez is still a douchebag, but I hope Magneto isn't going to get sucked down that extremist s+$%hole again. Frenzy is also one of my new favorites. She seems to be a true believer in Krakoa. I liked that scene with Wiz-Kid f#+$ing up that dragon thing with one shot. It was good to see Sunfire again. I always liked him.

Marauders is once again proving to be one of the best things to come out of this X-book realignment. The Crucible scenes between Callisto and Storm were magnificent. The punch to the hear, with a touch of lightening to stop it, was kick ass. Loved seeing Silver Samurai in the arena - he seemed fitting for that role. Surprised to see Fenris there, as well. I'm guessing they're still a~#*%@#s. I have to wonder what Emma Frost's plans are regarding those little s~#% stains in that Verendi group. I'm guessing she'll either co-opt them, or kill them. I'm hoping for the latter. I liked how Kate had her sword phased through that thug, just ready to let it solidify....

Scarab Sages

My one problem with Marauders, however....

If they brought Callisto back to life in a new body, why does she still only have the one eye?

Firstly, did Philip just post his previous posting in reverse just to get attention? Also I still disagree with him and I think he's being a dick about what it is to like comics. So...yeah.

I'm kind of glad we're getting more and more insight into stuff along with the plot with the One Below All moving along. I could have told Sterns, never trust any devil. But yeah, it's good to see dick Gyrich back.

I like the Anniversary issue for Claremont, but I do agree it wasn't required reading.

Danny Cates' Thor run is still weird in terms of I wonder if it's REALLY Donald Blake or just some pastiche copy made of magic and memory. But I am glad to see Throg and Lockjaw team up to take him down.

I have to draw a point here in that the 'symbiote stupid" isn't stupid for many of us. Especially since it's been coming down the road for over a year now if not longer. So having SWORD be at the forefront is useful. I do agree that I like Frenzy's new attitude much more than her previous one.

As for Callisto with one eye instead of two...maybe she requested it. I dunno. Ressurrections/cloning in Krakoa are weird enough as is.

That was a meme that has been created for Immortal Hulk. 'This will be my last posting on /co' is a running joke. It is in reverse as a One Above All/One Below All joke.

Not a good meme...but okay...

Ewing has talked about bringing in more past Hulk characters(Hence the U-Foes) My list?

Something Gargoyle related from long ago.

Metal Master (Flew around on a slab of metal and could shape metal)

Some guy who found the Fountain of Youth and ruled an underground kingdom. Wanted to invade the surface.

There was a mutant kid who could shoot energy from his hands. He originally was in a Spider-Man comic where he was freaking out about manifesting his powers and got 'Shot non-lethal' by SHIELD. Hulk(As Fixit) encountered the kid again.

Rock and Revenant

Woodgod?

Bannor encountered a couple that had found a baby Dire Wraith and kept him sedated to not change.

Woman who could change others into glass. Got glassed herself but is unbroken.

Jarella of course.

Mercy

Romulus Augustulus also know as Tyrannus. He was last seen in Incredible Hulks issue number 635. He and Betty had a short fling while she was still Red She-Hulk.

Really? Wow, bad taste there.

Yeah...it wasn't Betty's best hour there...

Scarab Sages

New FF issue - in an otherwise unremarkable story (which seems to be becoming par for the course with FF these days), the most interesting thing was the glimpse into a possible future death of Reed at the hands of Ben. It left me wondering...what stupid, crap rewrite of FF history are they going to pull off now, that would idiotically make Ben want to kill his best friend.

The new Maestro mini series could be interesting. I liked seeing Machine Man outsmart D!&!%ead Hulk. I remember the Pantheon from back in the day, even though I didn't collect Hulk at the time. And, of course, Doctor Doom is going to be around.

Savage Avengers was mostly a waste, since it was basically pimped out to that King in Black crap, but it was worth reading just to see the part where Conan forces Deadpool through the cell bars.

Avengers continued the Phoenix fight. I see that Namor is an evil douche again. Black Panther comes across as kind of an arrogant dick. I had to do a little googling to find out more about American Eagle. I remember when they ripped off that character to change up Proudstar. I had to do a little more googling to find out why the Squadron Supreme was evil now. That was weird. Does it make me a bad person that I enjoyed seeing Howard the Duck get the crap beat out of him?

Scarab Sages

Batman Black and White issue number 2 is the first DC book I've bought so far this year. With that Future State crap going on, there won't be many. Still, since it's multiple stories, I figured it deserved its own post

I was shocked when I read the Tom King story. It was actually good. And the art wasn't too bad either. I can always appreciate well done religious philosophy. If he'd write more stuff like this, I might actually begin to think he was a decent writer, instead of a hack who occasionally does something worthwhile.

The second story, by some chick named Sophie Campbell, was meh. The art was decent enough, though.

The third story, by some husband and wife team, was good. Good Joker story. Good art. Those two work well together. I might have to keep an eye out for more of their stuff.

The story by Dustin Weaver was nonsensical crap. The art was decent.

The last story, by some dude named David Aja, was really good. I loved the art - reminded me of Batman: Year One. The story itself was decent enough. I also liked the way they presented it, like it was a bunch of newspaper strips. It really helped make the whole story kick ass. If this is a typical example of his work, DC would be well-advised to keep this Aja guy around.

Scarab Sages

Daredevil was another wasted issue with this King in Black crap tie-in. I'm still loving Elektra as Daredevil, though. The costume looks kick ass.

And Last God had it's last issue, for Book 1 at least. Good story. Good art. I really hope they continue on with more of this sooner rather than later. Otherwise, I won't be getting anything from DC except Batman Black and White, which doesn't seem to be regular.

Conan the Barbarian was kind of cool. At least they didn't drag out this story of the evil magic sword possessing him.

New Mutants was weird. I'm not sure where they're going with Shadow King, but it doesn't seem to be good. The writing is a bit weak, otherwise the story would make more sense.

Wolverine was kind of cool. Wonder when his old hand got severed. Didn't recognize the weird looking dude who picked up the bloody rag. Hopefully, the next issue will be filled with Maverick and Wolverine kicking the s@~! out of lots of folk, followed by Maverick coming back to Krakoa to settle down and be party of the nation. I always kind of liked him.

X-Men was interesting. Back in old costumes. Straightforward mission to help the Shi'ar. The art was...intriguing. Kind of reminded me a little of Jim Lee, and a little of Whilce Portacio. I liked it. Storm kicked ass.

Scarab Sages

Fantastic Four - Sue as the overprotective sister, willing to spy on her own, adult brother just didn't seem in character. Yet another disappointment in this rebooting of the FF. Otherwise, the issue was a complete waste of paper.

The Morbius one shot was interesting. The art was meh, but the story was pretty decent.

The Phoenix story in Avengers continues to be interesting. Namor is being written as a complete tool and villain these days, so I find myself wanting to see him get his ass handed to him, in as severe and brutal a fashion as possible. I like the idea of the others trying to make sure someone worthy and dependable gets the force. And now, apparently, Thor has some Phoenix blood in him? Weird.

Daredevil was cool enough. I like the way Matt rejected that Knull dude, and figured out a way to kill a symbiote. Elektra's outfit as Daredevil is really cool. Other than that, another wasted issue.

Immortal Hulk had a cool focus on Joe Fixit. I like these little insights into how the different personalities would work together to get s~&% done, while protecting Banner. Looking forward to the fight with the U-Foes. And I'm hoping they'll get this crap with Leader over soon. That s~~!'s starting to drag on too long.

SWORD was a cool focus. I wasn't familiar with this character, but I kind of like the way they explain his power. And I see that Gyrich isn't just being an evil dick to Hulk. Good to know he's consistent.

Wolverine: Black, White & Blood was another interesting issue. I liked the first story, except for them showing Mariko as some bad ass warrior chick. That's not the way she used to be, so I'm guessing they did some kind of idiotic reimaging of the character. F*!@ing stupid. The future Castle/Wolverine/Juggernaut story was...meh. The story itself was fun, but I expected better from Bachalo's art. Maybe it just doesn't translate as well in three colors. That last story, with MAIM, was a fun read. Art was okay. Loved the red suits, and the way he ended up beating the robot was kind of cool. All in all, the issue was another decent one.

Scarab Sages

Picked up issue 3 of Batman Black and White, which is the only DC book I buy these days.

I foolishly expected better of the first story, considering it was written by an Academy Award winning writer. Instead, it was a tired Hollywood cliche. At least the art was kick ass.

The second story was an interesting take on Bats and Poison Ivy. I liked it well enough, as it kind of reminded my of Neil Gaiman. The art was pretty decent, but I think it would have been better with color.

The third story was, I think, the most solid one of the issue. Simple, straightforward writing, with a nice twist at the end. And the art really lent itself to the black and white style. I loved the redesigned bat symbol on the chest Hopefully, they'll get this dude to do more Bat work.

Kelly Jones and Tim Seeley doing a Batman horror story? It was awesome. What more needs be said?

The last story was kind of weird. Decent art, and I got a Masque of the Red Death vibe at the end.

Scarab Sages

Maestro War & Pax has the Pantheon again. I'm only vaguely familiar with them, since I didn't collect Hulk back then. Still, the story is interesting.

Immortal Hulk: Flatline was a cool little one-shot. It's got me wondering, though. If other gamma-mutates have returned from the grave, will this old teacher do the same? Could be interesting.

Savage Avengers - I liked the bit of back story with Conan's symbiote sword. Sorry to tell Conan, however, but I recollect smashing Iceman won't do much good. I'm not much of one for this King in Black crap, but it is providing a nice diversion to the seemingly never ending Kill Kulan Gath story.

Throg (and Lockjaw) versus crazy Donald. That was f##!ing awesome. Simon Walterson - Bwahahahahahaha!!! Hopefully, they'll finish this story soon.

New Mutants current plot (if you want to call it that) is jumping all over the f$*!ing place. It'd be nice if they focused on one or two things at a time, instead of 30. Shadow King is such a d%%#@ead, but he seems to be trying to play nice, in his own way. I'm waiting for the other fez to drop.

X-men.....I'm still not too crazy about these Children of the Vault. That's from a time when I wasn't collecting any x-books. And I'm kind of glad about that. Not mutants, but super evolved humans? What kind of stupid s!+% is that? Still, I love seeing Synch again. I always thought he had interesting potential.

Wolverine - it was nice to see Logan and Maverick kicking ass. Loved the kabob kills. I hope Maverick doesn't turn against Krakoa. Since I was always indifferent to him, however, if he does I'd like to see Wolverine feed him his own spine. And now I'm curious where that severed Logan Hand came from.

Marauders - I still despise these little Verendi Punks. I like the new Marauders, though. Now they just need Pierce to lead them. Loved the Moira hospital. I'm wondering if Emma knows the truth about Moira. It seems like something the Prof and Magneto have kept mum.

Scarab Sages

Last, but not least, FINALLY!!! Issue #2 of The Last Ronin was well worth the wait. Got to see how Raph bought the farm, and some hints as to what happened to everyone else. The art, both types, was spectacular. Mikey being in an advanced state of mutation was cool. And...was that? THE FUGITOID'S HEAD?!? Cool!

A-zombie,

Throg has been a favorite of mine...so to see him (and Lockjaw) kick who ever this is (I still don't think it's really Donald Blake) butt was pretty epic.

I think with regards to Marauders, you meant Reavers...but yes. It's nice to see Frankenstein's descendent go old school...in a way.

Scarab Sages

Daredevil - more of the same. This Daredevil in prison storyline is starting to get tired. Still, with that ending, it seems they might be ready to move on finally. At least the art is still good.

Avengers - the Phoenix story is also dragging on. Thank the gods they seem to be coming to an end with the next issue. Personally, I'm hoping the new Phoenix host is either Shanna or She-Hulk. The Red Widow's costume looks cool, but I think the whole Red Room thing is being overused.

Conan in Khitai. Sounds like it could be lots of fun. I loved the giant silver apes. And I'm glad they didn't overdo the cursed sword thing.

Hulk got his ass handed to him, which is probably something that should happen every so often, just to keep things interesting. I'm hoping next issue will finally resolve the Leader story arc. Glad to see yet another writer who knows how to use Gyrich - as a complete and utter tool. Not sure why I didn't see it before, but the art is reminding me of Mandrake. No wonder I like it.

Scarab Sages

Wolverine: Black, White & Blood....

Another cool issue. Two definite flash-backs and a whenever.

Loved the bit with him boozing it up and fighting Mystique after his wedding let down. The art was really solid. Mystique looked good. I think it might have been cooler to have her using her powers more during the fight. Mohawk Storm for the win!

Wolverine hunting down a%+**~* cyborgs during that timeframe when I first really started regularly collecting X-titles? Hell yes. I've long thought the Reavers were one of the better villain groups to go up against the X-men.
Current, kiddie-produced version being the exception. The story was good. The are was adequate.

The final story was...okay. Half-decent writing. Half-decent art. I've always loved the Savage Land, though. And it had Sauron and Garokk a well, so that made it worth the read.

Scarab Sages

On a side note. I'm seeing various advertisements in the books, and speaking of art that reminds me of someone...

One is for Venom #200. That art reminded me a bit of Bernie Wrightson. I sure do miss him.

Another was for what seems to be a new Guardians of the Galaxy book. It looks to me like whoever did that art was, unfortunately, influenced by Liefeld.

A third was an ad for Women of Marvel. I'm assuming that's the cover art. Personally, I think it's horrid. However, it also comes across to me as distinctive. That's not always a bad thing.

Honest for what I read, that one issue with the whole "Thor's Mom is the Phoenix" was pretty damn terrible. Also I don't think She-hulk is going to be the new Phoenix. I was hoping echo, but now I'm betting on Shanna.

I like the direction Daredevil is taking but I feel like Wilson is missing the point about how much actual power he wields. But whatever.

We have about 5-6 more issues left. I'm pretty sure some of it will get solved.

Didn't much care for Wolverine's title on honestly. Not that 30 years of Deadpool was better, but still...

The Guardians are getting a sort of new book in the sense they are expanding the ranks. We'll see what that means going forward.

Scarab Sages

Well, holy s$+$balls! Even though I have a folder/box/whatever at my local comic store, I still keep a list of what I want to get each week. That way, when they inevitably screw up, I still get what I want. That, and sometimes I need to remind myself that something new is coming out I might want to pick up.

Anyway, checking my list for this week and last, I discovered that there will be two weeks in a row that I actually spend money on something from DC. Since most of their stuff sucks goat testicles, that's become a rare occurrence.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Any in particular I should be aware of?

Also glad that Crystal Frasier (yes THAT Crystal Frasier) has gone from consulting on Immortal Hulk to writing with Ewing on his next series, Gamma Flight.

Scarab Sages

I actually picked up two DC books this week. So miracles do happen.

Superman Red and Blue #1 was interesting. I had no idea they were putting it out, but my daughter was with me and liked the cover art. So I bought issues #1.

The first story was really cool. It was a sequel, of sorts, to a World's Finest story from back in the 70s. Good art.

The second story was kind of sad, but also a good reminder that, for all his power, there are just too many problems Superman can't fix. Good art.

The third story was decent enough, if a bit cliché - kid saves superhero in battle. The art was okay. Someone should tell the writer, however, kids don't talk like that. It made the whole story rather silly. The art was decent, however.

The fourth story, with the 5th dimensional imp stealing all color from the world, was really interesting from a philosophical point of view. It makes you realize just how much of our world is impacted by something so seemingly simple as color.

The last story, set in Clark's kindergarten days, was adequate. The art as well.

Scarab Sages

The other DC book I picked up was Batman Vs Ra's al Ghul. To be honest, I'd forgotten all about this miniseries. This was issue 5 of 6, so there's still one more to go. All I'll say is, the story is weird, but the art is awesome.

Scarab Sages

I picked up Black Knight #1 on a whim. It was a decent first issue. I'm hoping the writing gets better. The art wasn't half bad.

SWORD was still stuck in the idiotic King in Black storyline. I like Frenzy even more after this issue, but hadn't realized (or maybe forgot) she had a thing for Cyclops. I like Manifold a little more as well, although his powers seem kind of very open to interpretation. Brand is kind of an a+&~%*~. Mentallo has potential for some fun. I was thinking, though, The Five have at least one Omega mutant with (as I recall) reality warping powers. Surely he could go FUBAR on any Knull possessd mutant. Those last few pages, however, have me worried their going to ruin things by having Magneto go full on douchebag again.

And then their was THOR. As is often the case, I think they drag these stories on way too long. Mostly because most modern comic book writers lack the talent to tell a decent story in anything less than 4 issues. That being said, this story has been pretty kick ass. Thor showing up at the end, with his soul animating the Destroyer armor, was f&!*ing beautiful. The art continues to kick several kinds of ass.

I haven't read the #1 issue of Black Knight but I'm hopeful to read it soon.

I still maintain King in Black is decent if you accept that Knull is more Cthulhu than god. Anyways Manifold/Eden has always been my favorite and last issue I felt opened it more about his abilities. This issue just confirmed it. Also Brand is always an ass. Magneto will probably go full douchebag if only because there's still room for douchebaggery in this new mutant world.

While I've not been fond of how Donald Blake has been portrayed, Throg and the rest of the supporting cast has been stellar and now to see Thor use the Destroyer Armor (enhanced by Yggdrasil) means this will be an interesting fight.

I wanted to like it, but it has stuck Dane with the same bumbler role that fell on Scott Lang, and Clint Barton, etc. over recent years, where they devolved from competent or even respected heroes into doofuses the rest of the superhero community basically puts up with.

I didn't like it with Clint or Scott, and I don't like it here.

Loved seeing Frenzy get her smack on, she's always been a favorite. (Although she's like, a foot shorter, and much better looking, then when she was a villain. Like most villains-turned-hero, she's had the ex-villain makeover where she suddenly became a swimsuit model.) :)

In some Age of X or something (yet another alternate reality) she and Cyclops were an item, and when that reality got undone, she was one of the few that retained her memories of that AU (Cyclops, AFAIK, was not, so he has no idea that he and Frenzy were a couple!).

The Omega on the five is Elixir. Proteus is pretty crazy, but not an Omega, AFAIK. They'd could possibly inflict some damage, but I think the whole point of the whatever protocols was to remove them from danger since they were so important to reboot the human race, not throw them right into combat and risk one or more getting killed (or, worse, taken over by Knull and used against humanity/mutantkind!).

Loving this book, so far, and the artwork is great. I'm not sure what's going to go on with Magneto and Cortez, but I get the impression from Mags attitude that Cortez isn't going to get the reception he was hoping for...

Mentallo is taking lots of shade, and really not the sort of dude you want to get on the bad side of. He's a middling telepath, but also a technological genius whose all up in SWORDS top secret uber-tech business. Not the sort of position you want someone who resents the way you're treating him to be in.

Mentallo is the B-Lister who usually hung out with Beetle, right? I'm also thinking of another hardware focused villain they teamed up with as a 'Baddies of the week who get clobbered by Spider Man' group

Philip,

Mentallo is pretty B-lister, but there are goodly amount of tech/hardware heavy villains that Spidey fights.

Set,

Age of X is correct as it was created by *drum roll* Legion! Also he and Frenzy were married because Jean died WELL before they ever met.

While I am in agreement about the treatment of Clint and Scott...Not sure that is the case here with Dane since he's got a lite version of Stormbringer in some ways. So there's that...

Mentallo was the Fixer's plus one pretty much exclusively. They seemed inseparable as a buddy-crime-duo until Fixer went off and did that Thunderbolts thing without him, since then he's been at loose ends, it seems.

Scarab Sages

As I recall, Mentallo was (for a short time) part of the Resistants group funded by Red Skull. That was back around when they first introduced John Walker. The group was meant to stir s$%$ up, like the Watchdogs, Scourge of the Underworld, etc.

Ah Scourge! Marvel's way of cleaning out the C-D listers. They ironically went D lister themselves after the big Captain America finale.

Yep until Ben Reilly started cloning them...

Scarab Sages

I picked up the first issue of the Alien series. It was...interesting. Larroca's artwork was great, as always, but some of the faces seemed a bit off. It looks like the story is picking up kind of where the second movie left off, but with some as-yet not completely revealed encounter with the Xenomorph's occurring in the meantime. And, I never thought I'd say this, but they managed to make people fighting the "evil corporation" seem like just as much the a$%@&%&s. And I'm really hoping they're not going to go for some more humanized alien queen.

Another just for s+&&s and giggles buy was the Keanu Reeves involved BRZRKR. Awesome artwork by Ron Garney. An interesting beginning for the story. Color me intrigued. At least enough to keep buying. I've heard they're going to make it a Netflix movie.

The new Maestro story keeps being okay. By now, however, I'm just buying it for completeness.

Savage Avengers was another largely wasted, King In Black crossover issue. Two things, however, made this issue worth buying. Iceman unleashing his inner Omega Level Mutant and going all Frost Giant. Then seeing Deadpool wearing one of the White Queen's old outfits.

Scarab Sages

For the second week in a row, I actually spent money on a DC title. This issue of Batman Black and White was pretty solid.

The first story, with the little bat, was pretty decent. The art was okay, except for the faces being kind of weird. The only keeping it from being much better was the inclusion of that little douchhat Damien at the end. That can ruin any story.

The second story, a ghost tale, was my favorite of the issue. Solid story. Solid art. I was a little puzzled by the Robin in this one. Kind of a cross between Carrie Kelley and Dick. So now I'm not sure if I might have missed the addition of a new Robin in the comics. Thankfully, I don't care enough to bother looking it up.

The Poison Ivy story was pretty cool. The art was decent, but could have been a lot better.

The chess story was really well done. Didn't care as much for the art, but it wasn't terrible.

The last story, murder mystery at the Circus (complete with a still using a pacifier baby Nightwing), was probably my second favorite this issue. Solid writing. Solid art.

Not a fan of the alien franchise.

BRZRKR has the effect of me waiting to see this on Netflix.

Savage tie to King in Black was fine. I just keep wonder how Emma is going to feel about a barbarian from the Hyborian age living in her old place.
