Scarab Sages

Wherein I ramble about current goings* on in the stuff I collect. I figure this is easier than creating a thread for each title.

*note - since I tend to build up a backlog these days, there will be plenty of lag.

Scarab Sages

Just finished reading issue #2 of the new Nick Fury series. I've been enjoying it so far, but I'm not particularly crazy about the art.

Scarab Sages

Titans is starting to suck. First it was that damned cross-over, where they f&!~ed Wally West over some more (seriously, f@#$ you Didio). Now they're introducing relationship drama (it's like the f**#ing CW), as well as the concept of a traitor. The artwork is pretty cool though.

Nightwing is entertaining, although they're basically rebooting his original series. Not very creative.

Scarab Sages

They stuck a copy of that Dark Days: The Forge in my box, since I collect Detective. It was ok. The art rocked seven kinds of awesomeness.

My biggest quible was "lunar batcave". Seriously? That was f@&~ing stupid. Why not just have him use the Bat Shark Repellent?

Scarab Sages

There may be more today. I'm trying to take advantage of Father's Day to catch up on my reading.

I quite liked both of those so far.

A bit of an homage to the old Steranko SHIELD stories, especially in the first issue.

Scarab Sages

Oh joy! They've brought an adult Damien into Batman Beyond as the new Demon. And hear I was enjoying the series. I wonder if he'll be just as much of an obnoxious little s!@% as his younger counterpart....

It pisses me off, really. Beyond was the one Bat series where, so far, I was free of that damnable character. Seriously, if I could go back in time just once, I think I'd use the opportunity to somehow stop Grant Morrison from ever creating that little abomination.

Scarab Sages

Either that, or Bart Allen would still be Flash and all the others would be done for.

Scarab Sages

Part 6 of The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom was in my box this week. Unfortunately, I don't have Part 5. Until now, I wasn't sure if it had been delayed. Those idiots at the store never put the issue in with my other stuff, something they've had a problem with before. This is why I keep a list of what's coming out each week, and bring it with me when I go. Because I can't trust them to do their jobs properly.

Scarab Sages

That's why I take joy in putting stuff they stick in my box, but that I don't want and didn't ask for, back in random locations throughout the store.

Scarab Sages

Hey, though! It's nice to see someone finally doing something with that idea they had for a Dark Crystal Sequel. I read the third issue today, and it's been pretty cool.

Scarab Sages

I've been loving the most recent Conan series from Darkhorse, sporadic though its publication has been. Cullen Bunn has been doing a decent writing job, and the art has been cool.

I just wish Darkhorse would go back to showing more love for some of REH's other characters.

Scarab Sages

Finally caught up on all my reading.

DC's Kamandi Challenge has been a fun little series. It's cool to see what each new creative team does with the cliffhanger the previous team left for them. Overall, it's been very creative. The only problem is it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

The Dark Knight III is finally done. It was a cool story. Although I felt it was kind of rushed near the end, and that Miller wasn't really into it. Still, it was entertaining.

Moon Knight was weird, but a fun run. I'm sad to see it over.

Scarab Sages

In fact, now that I think about it, with Moon Knight ended, and Man-Thing soon coming to an end, I'll be down to just three Marvel titles.

I don't see Daredevil ending anytime soon. Even if the current run comes to an end, they'll pick it up again soon enough. Infamous Iron Man won't last, though. Doom is always far better used as a villain. Nick Fury can maybe last, but I wouldn't bet good money on it.

Scarab Sages

In updating my list through the end of August, however, I noted some pretty cool s$@& coming down the line from DC. Mostly one shots, but there's one mini-series. Listed below:

New Gods Special #1
Mister Miracle 12-part mini-series
Sandman Special #1 (not the Gaiman Sandman)
Manhunter Special #1 (Paul Kirk!!!)
Black Racer & Shilo Norman Special #1
Darkseid Special #1

Needless to say, each of these got me excited. Especially the New Gods stuff, which has always been a favorite of mine. I know there's also a new Forager series that's been out, but since the artwork sucks big hairy goat balls, I didn't bother collecting it.

My feeling? Infamous Iron Man will last until October. Maybe. It depends on Legacy and Generations.

Scarab Sages

So now I've got stuff to add to my store list.

Not sure how I feel about the New Gods special, but the Mister Miracle does look very appealing.

Plus the stuff for Metal is pretty interesting. At least I think so.

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Meh. The metal stuff might be interesting, but it doesn't seem very coherently put together at the moment. The Forge one shot was decent, at least.

In the end, if it means they get their house back in order, I'll be happy. Especially if they get consign Damien Wayne to the memory hole where he belongs, and maybe shift Cyborg back over to the Titans where he belongs.

Well Damien does need more consistent writing. Some times (like what he did in the Lazarus Contract thingie) he becomes SUPER jerk. Other times...he just a kid that's a jerk (like in Superman #25)

Otherwise I do agree. We'll see about getting the houses in order. So far it seems...dodgey at best to get what you and I might consider "good".

Scarab Sages

The only good Damien is one that never existed. They're even polluting Batman Beyond with him now, although I hope it will prove to be Ra's mind transferred into the abomination's body.

A-zombie,

Maybe but I also think thanks to the crap in Future's End polluting that future, plus Rebirth trying to fix it, still means there's a possibility Damien joins Grandpa and Mom's ideas after seeing Dad kind of destroying the world...

Scarab Sages

The Future's End crap was why I stopped collecting Batman Beyond for awhile. Thankfully, Rebirth seems to be setting things right.

A-zombie,

It has...and it hasn't. But mostly it at least brought back the originals and added a more aged Matty along with Terry and Max.

Scarab Sages

The latest issue of Blue Beetle had Doctor Fate name-drop the Lords of Order as the folks he worked for. That was pretty cool. I'm hoping this brings back the Lords of Chaos as well.

Scarab Sages

One of the things I dislike about the Nightwing reboot is they've done away with the money he inherited from his parents, which during the old run Bruce had given to Lucius Fox for some investment magic.

Scarab Sages

In Detective, however, they've brought in Zatanna, always one of my favorites to co-star with Batman. And the current story is focusing on Azrael and the Order of Saint Dumas.

A-zombie,

One thing I noticed in that Detective Comics moreso than the main story is Batman and Zatanna talking about either raising the dead, contacting the dead or something in between.

Also I did notice the name drop. But I'm more interested in how Teri Magnus got from 3001 (which was an alternate timeline) to Rebirth now.

Scarab Sages

I'm have come to the realization the writing in the Flash comics has, over the years, become just as convoluted and insane as the TV series. It may have even influenced the idiocy of the TV writers. Ever since Flashpoint and the New 52, it's all been screwed up. They've killed off Thawne so many times it isn't funny. And they also seem to consistently change his reasons for hating Barry. It can be maddening at times.

The lastest issue, however, had what looked to be a small bit of art inspired by the cover from issue #1 of Original Wally West. So that was cool.

A-zombie,

Yeah that issue was pretty twisted. I preferred the Pre-Flashpoint reason honestly for Thawne hating Barry rather than this. But I will agree they did put some love to OG Wally in this issue.

Scarab Sages

The latest issue of Kamandi Challenge was the first one that sort of let me down. It felt very rushed. The artwork was good, though.

Still, the overall series has been enjoyable. I'd love to see DC do something similar with other characters.

What you mean like Plastic Man maybe?

Scarab Sages

So....this Dark Days Metal stuff from DC. I didn't ask for it, but the comic book store stuck it in my pull list. Normally when they do this, I just put whatever they're trying to sell me in a random location on the shelves.

First off, they've got some talent working on it, especially from the art standpoint. So that's cool.

Second off - oh joy, Batman is once again the center of the DC universe. As much as I love the character, that s!#% is getting ridiculous.

Third, I seriously hope they aren't going to keep harping on that crap about the Joker being some immortal. Beacuse that s$#+ is just plain idiotic.

And it seems that, from Joker's ravings, traces of Nth metal (or some other kind of "special" metal might be responsible for meta-abilities. Interesting take on things.

Anyway, I hope it all leads to at least some kind of resolution to the whole Rebirth story.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of "rebirth"......

For the new Nightwing series, it seems to be not so much a "rebirth" as a "reboot" of the original (and FAR superior) run started by Chuck Dixon and Scott McDaniel. Except with tons more lameness, inlcuding a bunch of E-list reformed "villains" and a far less impressive Blockbuster.

I've been hoping the series would improve, but it might just be time to say goodbye.

Scarab Sages

It's kind of the same with Titans. It's been pretty annoying so far, especially with the way they keep screwing with Wally. This has been one of the less than impressive versions of rebooted characters in the current DC continuity. No Raven. No Cyborg. Lots of memory-holed character development. Very disappointing.

Scarab Sages

On the other hand, Detective has been entertaining. I'm still not thrilled it's become just another Bat-Team book, but the stories have been decent, with some interesting character development.

Except for the whole Spoiler-as-a-whiny-little-brat plot. That s$!%'s just annoying. It'd have been better if they just left the character dead.

I actually LIKE Metal because clearly it is about other worldly metals and their influence on not just Metas, but magic and other things.

I dunno if it will tie up Rebirth, but I do think it ties WELL into it.

We'll see if that stick.

I skipped Nightwing mostly because I've grown VERY tired of seeing Dick Grayson. It's kind of the same thing with Titans in some ways. I will agree they have COMPLETELY screwed over Pre-flashpoint Wally. But if you're looking for Cyborg, again he's a Leaguer. Raven is with the younger "cooler" kids. I mean at least they have Young Justice type version of Aqua-lad.

Detective, for me, is more about resolving issues that I didn't know existed (like Bruce's memory loss for one and guest cameo by Zatanna)

Spoiler has lost me. But then again she lost me when she went back to being Spoiler instead of Bat-girl.

Scarab Sages

Thomas Seitz wrote:

This, to me, is partly what's wrong. Cyborg is a Titan. At least, he should be.

Thomas Seitz wrote:

Poor Raven, she got stuck on the team lead by the least impressive and most annoying Robin in the history of the character. Which, of course, is why I don't collect that book.

Scarab Sages

The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom was an excellent mini-series. I'm hoping it will lead to a resurgence for the character. Maybe even a new ongoing series.

A-zombie,

You keep telling that to Geoff Johns and Didio. Maybe they'll listen. (I doubt it.)

I understand WHY you don't collect it (As I said I blame Damien for probably killing OG Wally West) But I read mostly in the vain hope they'll kick him off and make Starfire the leader.

Fall and Rise was good...but I didn't think it was the best Captain Atom mini-series.

Scarab Sages

I see Keith Giffen has gotten lazy. It only took him 10 issues and change to resolve his first story line in Blue Beetle.

On the other hand, there's Gerard Way writing Doom Patrol. It took him about 6 issues to resolve his first story line, but then he followed it up with what seems to be a one-shot. And it's been kind of weird and wacky. I like it.

I've got more stuff to read, but that'll have to wait. It's museum day today.

I couldn't really get into Doom Patrol. I tried but it just...never clicked.

Blue Beetle on the other hand is mostly Keith Giffen being self-referential along with reusing some characters from previous books. It's not ground breaking but it's certainly not dull.

Scarab Sages

Future Quest Presents seems to have....potential. Love me some Space Ghost and Herculoids, especially when presented in a more serious light compared to what you might have found on TV.

IDW's Micronauts and Rom series continue to be entertaining. Story-wise, however, Micronauts is...off. Rom's story is just slooooooowwwww...

If I recall correctly, the Power of the Dark Crystal maxi-series is based on the script for the aborted movie sequal. I get the impression the writers of the series had a VERY bare bones story to flesh out.

Scarab Sages

Probably not going to keep up with Titans too much longer. First they keep screwing over Wally West (thanks, Didio, you douchebag), then there's all the teen-angsty relationship drama crap, now maybe.....

Spoiler:
....Nightwing is a bad guy. Or brainwashed. Or whatever lame crap.

Scarab Sages

The Nick Fury series continues to be awesome as s*$$. Still not completely in love with the artwork, but the one shot stories more than make up for that.

Scarab Sages

Overall, I'm of the opinion DC is currently vastly superior to Marvel, especially in the writing department. And the new Mister Miracle series, of which I have not yet read issue #1, looks to continue that trend of kick ass-ness.

I'm hoping some of the other Kirby-honoring one shots lead to more, especially the Manhunter one shot. I'd seriously love to see something ongoing with that. As I recall, at one point they had a last surviving clone of Paul Kirk running around. I'd love to see him, or maybe Mark Shaw, return behind the mask.

Scarab Sages

Or more New Gods. I'm almost always up for some New Gods stuff.

Aberzombie wrote:

Definitely loving Nick Fury. Old school Steranko era vibe to it.

Nick Fury is fine but I can't really get into as much as I could say, US Avengers or Ultimates. But I guess that's because I'm kind of Al Ewing guy maybe.

I will agree, Titans is crap. Not sure DC is better than Marvel, but there are stories in DC I like more than Marvel. Some times.

Scarab Sages

Loved the Manhunter Oversize Special. Although, it was more than just Manhunter. There was a Paul Kirk story, followed up by a Demon Etrigan story. Fun reading on both counts.

Manhunter is one of those characters I wish they'd bring back. I think I've said that before.
