Scarab Sages

Picked up some new books today. Haven't read through them all yet, but figured I'd take a short break from reading.

DC has very little worth reading these days.

Detective Comics has been hit and miss since they went back to the old numbering system. A good example of miss was that idiotic Arkham Knight story. A good example of a hit was that Specter story. Now it looks like we're in for another miss, since they're pimping out Detective for the latest Bat cross over, Joker War. Still not a fan of the whole Court of Owls crap.

Hawkman has, at the least, been a little better. I like that he and Hawkgirl are back together again, for however long it will last. Not a fan of this new dark god, the Lord Beyond the Void. He seems to just be an uber-powerful vampire-like entity. His look is....less than impressive. The revelation of Hawkgirl as the servant of some kind of god of good was an interesting path to take. I loved the single page shot of her - very well drawn. I look forward to seeing how this goes, but am really hoping once it's done they'll lay off the whole past lives thing for a bit.

The new Batman Beyond story could be cool. I've always despised Damian Wayne as a pathetic little snotrag, and one of Grant Morrison's greatest sins against the world. So I keep hoping they'll do a story where they kill him off and memory hole him forever. Plus, I'm loving the new Bat Tower, and what looks to be Bruce's improved take on the Lazarus Pit.

Scarab Sages

I'm enjoying the new storyline in Doctor Strange. The whole black market magic items is fun. I'll admit, they threw me for a curve when the revealed Madam Masque as being behind it all. Still, I think a larger game is afoot here. Loving the artwork.

Ghost Rider has been...okay, but a bit of a disappointment. They're dragging this story on way too long already. It was fun seeing Punisher and Wolverine in the mix. And now we've got Blackheart playing.

*agrees that some of DC isn't worth reading...but Death Metal is awesome*

Shayera being a servant of some entity is fine...because it might mean she's serving the Presence perhaps.

Joker War is probably not going to be great...but eh. At least it's different now that Bruce Wayne might be going to prison for fraud and money laundering.

Yeah I forgot all about Whitney/Madam Masque going around stealing artifacts...mostly because it didn't make that much sense. But having her as Strange's new foe isn't the worst thing.

I think Ghost Rider is still trying to find its footing, especially in a changing landscape of events coupled with real world pandemic.

Scarab Sages

I saved what looked like the three best books for last, and wasn't disappointed.

The Batman's Grave has been a pleasure to read. Warren Ellis has been taking his time telling a pretty cool story, and it looks like he finally revealed the mastermind behind it all. I think the only part that bothered me was the implication that Gordon was okay with allowing his officers to arrange an accident for Colonel Sulphur. That's not Jim Gordon. The interplay between Alfred and Bruce was great, however. "Release the Bat-Hounds." "You mean you've never heard tell of the Naked Motorcyclist of Gotham City?" Awesome.

The Thor Black Winter story is still pretty cool, with some great art. Thor in battle with the Black Winter was showcasing a who's who of his past opponents. And the idea that Galactus is more than just a survivor of the previous universe is...interesting.

Immortal Hulk wasn't in much of his own book, except mostly by name. Still, this flashback along the lifeline of the Leader was pretty cool. I especially like this being journal entries, and the way the entries were made depending on where Sterns was on the power scale. Very cool. I look forward to seeing what he does next.

Thor and Immortal Hulk are great Marvel books and especially good comics.

I liked the nods to past Hulk comics. I wonder if the Pathway of Infinite Doorways(where Hulk got exiled to for a while and had three aspects of his life show up) will get a nods.

Philip,

Considering some of the other deep dives we've had, I wouldn't put it past Al Ewing. We'll just have to wait and see as the series progresses. (Which will at least be one more year since rumor has it the series will end at issue 50)

Unfortunately. I suspect Hulk will get a blast of some Gamma radiation and mutate yet again in a way that changes him from his Immortal Hulk state.

We'll see.

Scarab Sages

DC put out nothing worth paying for this week, and not even something I'd have taken for free, so it's all Marvel...

Despite Fantastic Four basically being pimped out to that damned crossover, I still picked up the issue. I liked the opening of the book, with folks from each side of the Kree/Skrull War going over that Battle of the Shattered Heart. That was cool. And, of course, the interaction between Spidey and Wolverine is always fun. Other than that, the entire issue was a waste of paper.

It's nice to see them getting back to Conan and the whole Serpent Crown thing. I wonder if they're leading to something big with this. Still, the whole Conan in the future is getting kind of old by now.

It was weird to see folks being nice to Hulk. I thought it was a welcome change of pace. It looks like the Leader isn't going to let that stand, however. I look forward to seeing where they go with this.

X-Men's free comic book day book was....interesting. I'd have paid money for it. I liked seeing Saturnyne and Otherworld again. Haven't seen them since Excalibur (the original). I'm getting more excited by what Hickman might have planned for the mutants of Marvel. The tarot reading was....neat. That preview of the Dark Ages story was...brutal...to say the least. I feel sorry for Tony Stark, and his leg.

The Magneto one-shot was cool. I don't think I've mentioned it before, but I like the new color for his outfit. It's very different I know the previous color have often been symbolic (or at least present that way on occasion), so I'd like to see them delve into this one. His interactions with Namor were fun. I'll be interested to see what that key unlocks. I like the citadel he built for Emma, but I wonder why she wanted that head incorporated. And I wonder what plans she has for that island. Because she's Emma, and of course she has a plan.

The new issue of Avengers, and part 2 of The Age of Khonshu, was both cool and a bit of a disappointment. It was cool just seeing Moon Knight in a starring role, and putting that hammer-shaped hole in Mephisto's chest. The disappointment came with them having Khonshu and Moon Knight take over the world. I guess they had to rip off from DC a little and make a more obscure hero turn against the other heroes. F+!#ing stupid. He could have just worked with them. That probably would have been the more shocking move, sad to say.

Honestly while Death Metal #2 wasn't QUITE the bees knees...it was DAMN sure heads above most everything else DC was offering. I will say this: It's not as rollicking as the first issue, but it's still VERY intense.

The Empyre stuff, especially the cross overs, appear at least semi-decent. We'll see as more gets released. I am glad that, both that Val and Franklin were trying their best until the plant monks showed up.

As for Conan and his stuff...I don't see much of a future going forward thanks to Covid killing lots of comic book things, (especially the momentum that Marvel was having in some books.) I do think the Serpent Crown affair will play out somehow though.

I dunno about weird, but I felt REALLY bad for both the Hulk and Banner with regards to Betty. That whole conversation was so...just not good. Also not sure what exactly is going on with Betty's mind...but I don't think it's entirely her in there. I'm positive also that Samuel Sterns aka the Leader has a very deep plan...I just hope it's not helping the One Below All with his idea for a future.

I didn't get to read free comic books. :(

I think with regards to Emma, she's making sure that if Krakoa goes under, there will still be a mutant refugee just in case. That or she's building her own newer version of a Hellfire club. We'll see. I am glad to see Namor and Magento having a nice time though.

To me, what was great about Avengers #34 (volume 8) is the fact there WAS a whole in Mephisto's chest. That was one of my top five epic death scenes in comics for 2020. So yeah. I also don't think Moon Knight is a) that obscure and b) that dumb to completely trust Khonshu. Most of what happened is because Khonshu (who let's face has his own issues and makes Loki seem stable) feels this is the right path. Whether it is or not...is unclear. As for Moon Knight working WITH the Avengers, as he told Black Panther (who is STILL the baddest Avenger even in chains), the Avengers get slaughtered and there's not much that can change that. So...yeah.

Scarab Sages

The new issue of Detective Comics was okay. At least it ended this most recent Two-Face story. Still, if they're going to take some of the better Batman villains and just make them simple pawns of Joker, why not just kill them off as worthless.

Batman Beyond was a little more interesting. I still keep hoping they'll just go ahead and kill of Damian. He's one of the only things that makes this particular future suck a little.

The Last God continues to be entertaining as hell. I'm really starting to love this world that DC has built. The story is really cool. The artwork is pretty good. The back-up excerpts from various histories and journals really helps to flesh things out. All in all, a solid effort.

Scarab Sages

Daredevil is still interesting, but I kind of wish they'd wrap this current stuff up and get on to something new. I was wondering, however, when they'd revisit that whole legal ruling that Superheroes can testify in court. I've been really enjoying the art.

The most recent New Mutants finally completed this story of the nightmare girl. It was all....okay. The art was kind of meh.

Wolverine was fun. I loved him getting Magneto drunk, just so he could steal his helmet. I'm not too familiar with this pink-haired little punk with the glasses, but I've already put him in the same category as Damian Wayne. It seems like they're setting Russia up as one of the major antagonists to Krakoa. Interesting. The only other real-world country that could probably fill that role would be China, but there's no way Disney would allow that to be put in a story. I'm looking forward to the next issue, when it looks like we'll be back to vampires.

On that note, kudos to the Wolverine writer, Ben Percy. He just impressed me by doing a three issue story. I didn't think there were many writers capable of doing something even that short anymore.

X-Men + Fantastic Four was a good resolution to an interesting story. I like the implications of what Doom did to Pryde's powers. That could prove fun, and provide a whole new dimension to a long-existing character. And Doom's conversation with the little chick at the end implies he could be problematic, especially considering the whole humans surpassing mutants because of tech and genetic manipulation from the two mini-series. And I loved how Xavier handled Reed at the end. Brutal, but effective. Let's face it, the dude deserved it.

Last God, to me, is basically what you take with fantasy today, mix in some great artwork and good backstory, and you get this.

I didn't read any of Detective....but only because it's still too much Joker War.

Batman Beyond I like even WITH Damien. Mostly because he's part of the story, not the star.

Daredevil, I'm glad he's getting back to basics and also dealing with his issues. We'll see if Spidey will accept that or not. (Of course he's got Sin Eater problems...so there's that.)

The nightmare girl I feel has to have some connection to Nightmare himself. But I could be wrong.

The 'punk kid" is Quentin Quire aka Kid Omega aka future host of the Phoenix Force. (At least in some futures.) He's kind of not a Damien so much as he's always been this obnoxious and egotistical. But being a high level telepath with some telekinetic ability is part of his deal.

Russia I don't think is behind it so much as Dracula is maneuvering them so he can take over. But that's just my opinion. I still am wondering who the Pale Girl is...and if she's like some kind of clone thing.

The X-men/Fantastic Four cross over was good...but I'm still not convinced by Charles NOT being a bad guy. I mean sure, Reed crossed a line...but doing that to him? That seems...wrong. (Also the little chick is Franklin's sister, Valeria who is kind of smarter than Reed.)

Scarab Sages

Picked up some comics for the first time in weeks. Up until this week, there had only been a few books in my folder, not worth running out and about for.

Detective Comics. Joker War. Meh.

Doctor Strange was a cool ending to the current story. I like Doc Druid, so I hope they keep him around. At the end of the book, however, were goodbye notes from Waid and Walker. So I guess either the series is ending, or a new creative team is coming on.

Fantastic Four. Empyre. Meh. Still, it's cool to see them using an old race like the Cotati again.

Hawkman was a cool, if kind of predictable ending. Ooh, let's give him all that life energy at once, so he'll overload. The ending was a bit of a surprise, though. Still, I fear with all the shake-ups going on over at DC, this book might be one that gets the ax.

X-Men. More Empyre. More meh. The Cotati that dude was fighting look like the bastard love children of Groot and the Floronic Man.

Batman's Grave is still entertaining, but it's starting to drag a bit. I'll be glad when it's done.

Immortal Hulk was cool. The Leader seems to be winning currently.

Marauders was f%~%ing cool. They finally figured out how to bring Kate back, thank the gods. I almost feel sorry for Shaw, when Emma and Kate get around to paying him back for being an a$~#~%#.

I didn't much look at Dectective but I do agree with the entire Joker War thing.

Doctor Strange is finished for now. Like many titles pre-Covid, it had something going...but now it's over.

I liked the Emypre tie-ins. Admittedly, the FF one is slightly better than the X-men, but hey we did get Darkchylde returns. So there's that.

Immortal Hulk is always good and cool. Also, yes the Leader is winning.

Hawkman might survive if only because I don't think Aquaman and Batgirl will.

I was a little shocked about the way they figured it out...but yes I'm glad Kate/Kitty is back and Shaw better watch himself.

Scarab Sages

The ending of Valkyrie seemed a little short on any kind of explanation. Still, I'm sorry to series come to an end. I thought it had potential. Guess the sales just weren't good enough.

Conan, Battle for the Serpent Crown is....kind of meh. I'm not sure I like this new Elder God, the Wyrm. Or yet another all-powerful snake-themed magic item. Or yet another scheme by Mephisto.

The Maestro mini-series started. I wasn't collecting Hulk back when they introduced that character. The only reason this issue was in my box was because I get Immortal Hulk. Still, Peter David usually serves up a good story. And the art was pretty cool.

Thor....Well, Damn! Dude killed Galactus and turned his helm into a house decoration. And that flash of what the Black Winter showed him was....interesting.

I'm loving Wolverine. Especially with them bringing back long-time X-men foe Dracula. The art reminded me a bit of Sam Keith. And maybe a bit of Silvestri. Kind of a bastard love child. Mutant Support Groups. Omega Red being a dick. Cool.

Avengers and The Age of Khonshu continues to entertain. I'm still hoping they don't keep Khonshu as a bad guy. All this Mephisto crap is really getting on my nerves, though. He's like the new end-all, be-all of bad guys. The new Thanos. The new everything. It's like they f++#ing Batman-ized him. F!$!, that's annoying.

Thanks for jumping on this grenade for me. I have an itch to know what, if anything, they are doing with Set and serpentfolk in the MU, thanks to Conan jumping over, and it's kind of a relief to not have to fork out money to find out the answer is 'not a hell of a lot.' (Ooh, Set's into stories about Set. Does that count as narcissistic or delusional or kinda weird or D) all of the above?)

I'm still pretty interested in this Krakoa business, and have been buying a half-dozen of the X-books (ignoring the ones that I don't care about, like Cable or Wolverine).

And I'm super-into the Empyre event, because I'm a big Young Avengers fan, and Hulkling, at least (and soon, Wiccan) is a big player. Exception: Empyre - X-Men has been pretty awful. But the main event itself has been cool.

Despite being a big fan of Moondragon (and, to a lesser extent, Noh-Varr), I haven't been able to get into Guardians of the Galaxy. Just, eh.

And that's about it for my Marvel. (Although I'm cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Werewolf by Night and Shang-Chi books.)

The only thing in DC I'm loving is Far Sector. Wild out there sci-fi, carefully removed from DC Earth and all it's drama, with a totally different Green Lantern. Nice art. Amazing story. Cool characters, both the main and the supporting cast.

I'm also reading Legion of Super-Heroes and Young Justice, hoping in vain they'll get good, but they've been different flavors of disappointing and I'm just throwing money at them out of nostalgia for when they were good.

Far Sector is good.

Much more sci-fi than superhero, but definitely cool.

Galactus got killed again? The Cosmic Jobber never fails to dissapoint.

Phillip Gastone wrote:

He's like a cosmic weeble, he gets knocked down, he gets up again.

After a point, every big character becomes the go-to guy to get beat up to showcase how utterly badass the *new* villain-of-the-week is, like that time Onslaught got introduced by sending the smoldering body of Juggernaut hurtling down out of the sky.

Yeah I remember Onslaught's message with Juggernaut. I felt bad for Juggy.

As for Galactus, I'm not yet convinced he's REALLY gone...but I am glad Thor used his power and body to blow up the Black Winter. And yes, that vision at the end, was metal.

Jane Foster's series ended because of Covid moreso than just sales. (At least that's my reading of it)

I'm glad that Peter David is taking a crack at pre-Maestro history for it. It's been interesting.

Mephisto isn't Thanos. Thanos is Thanos. I'm pretty sure Donny Coates proved that. What Mephisto is, though, is the guy behind a lot of stuff, INCLUDING Vampire nation builder Dracula and his now goal of making new vampires using X-genes.

Also I agree with Set, the X-men tie in for Empyre is/was pretty lame. But at least Strange fixed it.

As for Set himself and the Serpent Crown/Conan, I'm pretty much convinced that until they resolve Kulan Gath, it's not going to be a huge point atm.

Age of Khonshu has some great moments, but most especially because we see T'Challa prove he's the best Avenger.

As for DC, I'm still on a few titles, but right now my main hope is Death Metal. It's not perfect, but it's got the beats down pretty stable.

I hadn't collected any X-titles in years, but when I heard of the House/Powers of X miniseries it caught my interest. I haven't been disappointed yet. I only collect a few of the books myself, but I'll probably collect all the issues of the upcoming crossover event (something I rarely do).

Phillip Gastone wrote:

And Thor used his helmet for some architectural enhancements.

Yeah X of Swords seems interesting.

Also this isn't the first time Galactus' helmet got used for architectural reasons. See Donny Cates's Thanos Wins run.

Scarab Sages

Caught up on some of my reading.

FF was a continuation of that big crossover with the Kree and Skrull. Meh.

X-Men was also part of that crossover, but the story was way more interesting. Cool to see the idea of them getting creative and complimentary with their powers. The stuff with Exodus continues to creep me out, though. That dude's nuts.

The current Batman Beyond story still has Damian...alive. So it's disappointing.

Daredevil was just weird. Not sure I like the idea of the fake twin brother being a real boy.

The New Mutants story, with them going up against the radical doxxing a*%~%&#s, was pretty cool. Still not sure what that pink blob's powers are. Not sure how I feel about that Nova Roma bit, with the weird blond scientist(?) chick. On the one hand, new story. On the other, new genius villain who comes out of nowhere? Oh joy.

The whole Bathatten thing is ridiculous. More powerful than EVERYONE!
Sheesh, makes me with Watchmen went untouched.

Philip,

Not sure he's THAT more powerful; merely the fact he's got Manhattan powers. Which is kind of like if Batman had Superman's powers pre-Crisis.

Mostly I enjoy Death Metal for the fact I think it's going somewhere. Unlike Joker War...

FF cross over was alright but, the Aftermath/last tie in was way better. As was the Avengers one.

X-men cross over with Empyre was better than the tie-in. But then when you have Magento going off...that's pretty good. I think Exodus is just trying to fit in more.

Honestly I'm fine with BB Damien. He's better than current Damien by any stretch.

As for Mike Murdock getting his own memories...eh. It's not like I was expecting him to last this long anyway.

The weird blonde chick I have no idea what her deal is, but that's just more side story for me. Herman's story in this along with the DOX site, that was fun.

Scarab Sages

Whoever developed the world of The Last God for DC, I'm pretty sure does not like dwarves. Considering that world's version of them are just fine with murder, sexual assault and cannibalism. Still, it's creative in its difference, which is good.

Wolverine versus vampires. Still an interesting way to go, and something that promises some potentially interesting developments in the future. However, Dracula looks weird, and his cronies looked like cosplay cenobites. I notice they used the term daywalker, so now I'm hoping we'll see another Blade/Wolverine get together.

Scarab Sages

Finally got around to reading part four of The Question DC black label series. I think that was the last issue, which is a shame. The ending was kind of "meh". And, while I thought it was cool they were able to hit on some of the crazy real life s!$#, I wasn't thrilled with the writer's implication that all the police were murderous bullies. I thought it was rather douchey of him. It didn't surprise me, however.

The art was, of course, awesome. I hope they get Cowan, Sienkiewicz and Sotomayor working on more stuff together.

A-zombie,

I'm pretty sure they developed this specifically to be less like D&D and more like a Conan/Hyborian Age meets some updates that involve The Dragon Prince TV show and maybe Avatar.

Dracula is always weird looking in Marvel. It's part of his charm. Also I do think the Vampire nation stuff will get more than just Blade involved.

Scarab Sages

Conan Battle for the Serpent Crown is finally done. And I'm no longer sure why they even bothered publishing it. It seems to have just been a filler story.

It was nice to see the Justice Society in action over in Hawkman. Yet another huge mistake my DC, relegating them to whatever hell they put Wally West in all those years. Still, I can't help but think they're gearing up to bring the series to an end. That's a shame. There's about dozen far worse series I'd put on the chopping block first.

The Storm one shot was...meh. It seemed like just a way to insert a plot seed they might eventually want to get around to using.

Scarab Sages

The new issue of Thor is setting up some interesting stuff. Glad to see Thor has a sense of humor, with the writing on his hammer. And I was glad to see him patching things up with Bill. The whole Adam thing at the end has potential.

Immortal Hulk continues to impress. Although I really wish they'd stop doing this endless story arcs. And it appears as though the Leader is in control of the Gladiator Hulk persona.

X-men was...interesting. So now it looks like they're setting up an entirely new and otherworldly origin for mutants. One where Apocalypse was the "first mutant of the second generation of mutantdom on Earth". Very interesting. I look forward to seeing where they go with this. What was more interesting was the page talking about the Summoners of Amenth. So...mutants have wizards now?

Batman's Grave has been a fun story, but I'm glad it's nearly over. I think it could have been told in less time. I loved how Alfred handled Stirk.

Scarab Sages

And then, of course, there's issue #1027 of Detective Comics. The 1000-issue anniversary of Batman's first appearance. It was 144 pages, with 12 stories, several one-page art pieces, and a gazillion variant covers (I picked the Andy Kubert one). Overall, I was impressed. Every story was at least decent (even the one with that little toe rag Damian, and the one written by that asshat Tom King). Some of the art was pretty good, but I don't think any of it totally sucked. So, all in all, a not bad issue. I even think it was better than issue #1000.

Re:Immortal Hulk. Upcoming issue looks to be bringing back Guardian,Glow and Goblin from the Pathways of Destiny.

All we need now is Jarella to reappear.

For me, while the Serpent Crown was slightly filler-ish, it at least gave Conan some emphasis while we wait for more Savage Avengers stuff.

I liked the Storm one shot mostly because Storm got to go off, even if she was 'dying."

For me I'm not sure I'm that enthused considering that when someone messes with Mjolnir, it tends to ruin it for the rest of us. Still I'm hopeful Bill will get a new weapon to empower himself again.

With regards to the Leader, it's not "Gladiator" hulk so much as Worldbreaker Hulk. But yes it is clear the Leader now possesses the ability to control the minds and bodies of other gamma mutates.

Also A-zombie, if you read some of Excaliber you'd note that the Externals were used to make a gate so that Apocalyse can bring back his first Horsemen. Or at least get them back via Otherworld.

Phillip,

I'm not sure Jarella is coming back any more than Caiera is coming back.

Yea, esp since Jarella is/was Ellison's property AFAIK
I do kinda remember some characters Hulk has faced, he had a run in with a Dire Wraith who was brainwashed into believe it was the son of two people and a woman who could turn others into glass. But those are no doubt to one shot and obscure.

Phillip,

I just think it's more likely that Ewing doesn't feel the need to bring back old flames for Bruce/Hulk while he's giving him "hell".

Phillip Gastone wrote:

Jarella was used a few times after that initial Ellison appearance, so I doubt there's any legal bar.

Scarab Sages

Fantastic Four was a nice filler issue. I missed the whole part about Thing and Alicia adopting those two alien kids. I'm guessing it was in some other book that was part of that crossover.

The Maestro limited series is interesting. I didn't collect Hulk when evil future version was first introduced, but the character is kind of cool.

Daredevil is getting a bit silly, I think. Still, I like how he wants Tony to use his wealth to f&&* over the evil blue bloods.

Savage Avengers is...okay. I like most of the characters. And the art is great. I just want to see them finish up with Kulan Gath. They're dragging that s#*# out way too long.

Batman Beyond felt rather rushed for an ending, and I'm worried the way they ended will mean a larger role for that little asshat Damien. Still, at least the story was only maybe 4 or so issues long. I was shocked it was so brief.

I'm still loving Last God as well, but that's another one where I wish they'd just get on with it. Still, in this case it's kind of understandable, since they're actually telling two parallel stories.

The Immortal Hulk one-shot Threshing Place was creepy awesome. It reminded me of the early issues of the series. Still, good story.

Finally got a chance to read that most recent issue of Marauders. The store missed putting one in my folder when it came out. The story itself was okay. What I really loved were the implications of what's going to happen to Shaw. The look on Emma's face when she read Kate's mind was....telling.

A-zombie,

The FF adoption came in FF: Empyre Aftermath. That and apparently Uatu is now back from the dead.

I always liked Peter David's run, and the Maestro was certainly of the reasons. So seeing more of this, is good.

I think while it's a little more...conventional in some ways, DD is going back to his roots while at the same time pushing the story forward. We'll see if Tony likes blowing that much cash.

Honestly I think once they finish up with Kulan Gath, there won't be as much of a need for Savage Avengers as before.

I wasn't that shocked since it's pretty clear BB is on the ebb towards ending.

I think for me, Last God is kind of telling dual stories while still trying to move the plot forward.

Threshing Place was neat and horrific. But not sure after this long a run, it was anything that significantly cool or interesting.

I can't comment on Marauders mostly because X of Swords is now upon us.

Scarab Sages

I've read the first two parts of the X of Swords event, and so far I'm impressed. I always liked Otherworld stories in the X-books. I'm really hoping Adversary makes an appearance. I like a lot of the details they've thrown out on Otherworld. Interesting to see Roma and Merlin on the outs with each other. And it seems the original Horsemen are, in fact, actual children of Apocalypse.

It'll be interesting to see where this goes. Especially with the reveal that any mutant dying on Otherworld will be returned, but not the same, effectively killing the character and returning a new one in the same body.

I was not planning on getting this X of Swords thing, but it has been captivating so far, and I'm digging the faux-Egyptian look of these new (old) Horsemen, particularly.

They've picked some really interesting characters to focus on, so far. Getting more focus on people like Polaris and Monet and Rictor and Apocalypse, than on Scott and Jean and Logan and Xavier, so far, has been gold for me. I'll probably be getting all but the Wolverine and Cable tie-in issues.

It's definitely well written and interesting, but I'm not really fond of the retcon of Apocalypse as an alien/Otherworldly mutant(?).

I had not gotten that impression at all, just that, many centuries ago, he and his brood fought off an invasion from another dimension, and his family got lost over there in the process. But they were all from Earth, originally, AFAIK. (Although he later got bumped up in power by some alien Celestial technology...)

Still, I've been skipping a few of the titles, such as Cable, and may be completely unaware of some plot threads! (I don't even know why he's a teenager, or has a sword from Galador? I didn't even know Marvel was still allowed to use Rom: the Spaceknight stuff, legally!)

It's definitely well written and interesting, but I'm not really fond of the retcon of Apocalypse as an alien/Otherworldly mutant(?).

Maybe. I haven't read as much. Maybe it all was originally a big mutant population on earth that got split off into the other dimension?

Scarab Sages

Yeah, the whole origin of Apocalypse seems a bit muddled now, but I got the same impression that he and his family are of Earth.

And, yes, the focus on some of the other mutants is nice. Although I do think they're going to bring in a few of the typical foci.

The only thing I'm not particularly fond of is the promise of a 22 part story. I think that's a bit much. Although, considering how many characters they have to work with, I guess I can understand.

thejeff,

Yes basically there was a VERY large mutant population on what was once Krakoa before it split. Then came the split and some ended up in another dimension that's apparently now part of Otherworld.

Set,

As for Kid Cable, you need read Extermination event that basically put the young X-men back into the timestream and killed Old Cable. Kid Cable got the Light of Galador from his own series. As for allowing Rom and the Spaceknights, while they aren't under control of Marvel, they still exist in the same way that Milestone and Wildstorm are still under the auspices of DC.

I'm okay with X of Swords. I just not sure how it all fits into the larger Marvel mythos along with Captain Britain and you know everything.

A-zombie,

I think the reason for so many characters is basically so they can do more with Tarot stuff. That and the return of S.W.O.R.D. as a more mutant oriented space story.

Scarab Sages

Otherwise, just got finished reading the latest issue of Avengers. I had thought this was going to be the last part of The Age of Khonshu, but I was wrong. So now we get to see the Fist of the Phoenix maybe put and end to both Khonshu's scheme, and this apparent interdimensional council made up of different versions of Mephisto. Not sure I like that. I always thought he worked better as being one of a kind.
