I want to build the hunter from Bloodborne

Advice

I have gotten into Bloodborne and I want to build the hunter as a character just for fun but I have no idea where to start. I want you guys to post how you would build the hunter so I can see how you guys see him and get some inspiration. I thought that the swashbuckler looked like a good chassis for him.but don't limit yourself to that or anything

The Hunter is a little difficult to build, because he relies on three different fighting styles (to my admittedly limited understanding of the game)

He has short range melee, long range melee, and gun.

The problem with this is that "gun" is a dedicated fighting style all on its own, and dabbling in it is expensive and not very effective. However, don't despair! There's a way to build anything and everything in pathfinder.

The short/long melee thing is the easiest to fix. We start by talking your DM into letting you use the "Creating New Weapons" rules found in the Weapon Master's Handbook. There's the crucial "Spring loaded" feature in there, which allows you to switch between Reach and nonreach as a swift action.

Example:

Whip-sword
1-handed; martial (5+2 base DP, 9DP total due to 2*Additional Design Points)
Slashing
Features: Finesse(3DP), Reach(1DP), Spring Loaded(2DP), 3*Increased Damage(3DP).

Now we have a martial weapon that is finesseable, can switch between blade and whipsword mode, and deals 1d8 damage. It costs at least 37 gp.

If you instead make it exotic, you can downgrade the damage to 1d6 and add +1 to the critical range. Given your swashbucklery plans, this might be a good idea. It also helps to reinforce that your weapon is unique to your character by making it exotic.

Make sure to pick up slashing grace(whipsword) at some point.

The picarroon archetype is a good fit for you, I think.

Ooh I like it, I'll look into the weapon masters handbook, I own it but I've never actually opens it and I forgot about picarroon thanks

Sovereign Court

Dwarven Axe, Dogslicer, or Sword Cane/Rapier are the melee weapons that first come to mind when I think of Bloodborne. During all my twitch playthroughs I only ever used the pistol and most often used the Whip-Sword or the Blood Katana.

For classes/archetypes I'd mainly say would be a Gunslinger. Pistolero, Gun Scavenger, or Mysterious Stranger archetypes could work well....but as already pointed out, Picarroon is probably the "best" fit with it combining pistols and Panache.

Beyond that, it's pretty straight forward and you just sprinkle in whatever extras you'd want to get the feel of the character you played in Bloodborne. One of the hard parts of this is that Bloodborne and Dark Souls allowed for quite a bit of flexibility so one person's character was often drastically different than another person's.

Ooh thanks, I think I'll play with some build concepts than post again for some help with making it viable

If you want to use guns and blades simultaneously, I recommend the kick up feat. This allows you to reload, and then pick up the weapon again.

Trophy Hunter Ranger using a Battleaxe and a one-handed pistol. Live that dream to hunt the wild beasts. Beneficial Bandoleer to reload.

Goddamnit, my internet ate my post.

To Sum it up

Swashbuckler 1(vanilla)/Siege Gunner 1/Alchemist 18

Grab an extra arm to use your gun, grab a Transformative weapon to serve as a trick weapon OR use the weapon creation rules to make a spring loaded weapon.

Ooh that sounds fun

Siegegunner 1 gives you Gunslinger's dodge, Quick Clear, a gun, gunsmithing, along with Int to Grit/Panache. Quick clear is necessary for any gun build and Int is rather important.

The regular Swash gives you Dex to hit, Parry and Riposte, and Dodging Panache. It gives you Cha to Panache, but that doesn't matter since you will probably have only minimal Cha. So its one more point, you can get double Int for Panache but it comes at the cost of losing Weapon Finesse for anything except Rapiers. So if you were planning on a dex build with some strange weapon it will fail.

The extra Arm discovery, or tentacle (if you want to be more of a mythos hunter, as a beast hunter I'd just skin the extra arm to be super hairy), works wonders for using a gun since it allows you to reload the weapon without dropping your other gun. It also frees up a hand for a Visceral attack, by which I mean a Feral Mutagen Claw. A shame Feral Mutagen claws are only 2x damage and not 4x damage. Still, if you took Butterfly Sting you could pass crits from your other weapons over to your clawed hand.

Other good discoveries include Spontaneous Healing and Healing Touch to allow for "blood transfusion" or the rapid healing that hunters experience. Various bomb improvements for your sub weapons, Wizard spells to add onto your Infusions, and for late game Permanent potion for wonderful buffs.

The Beastmorph archetype makes your Mutagen turn you more fully into a beastial aspect of a hunter or you could go with the Wasteland Blighter that I really really like because at 6th level you can absorb a healing spell into yourself as a standard action and then use it on anyone as a Swift action. This provides some serious healing potential.

However, both of those give up on poisons if you were ever going to experiment with those.

Oh, and I just noticed that Opportune Parry and riposte doesn't state what kind of weapon you have to use to deflect the attack. So once you have Snap Shot you could probably use OP&P with your gun.

Actually nearly none of the swashbuckler's abilities require you to use a rapier and empty offhand/buckler.

It's just precise strike, really.

Swashbuckler 1 is a fairly excellent dip for two-weapon fighting paladins, for example.

I was referring to the Inspired Blade archetype that gives you Int to panache but cripples you into only being able to use Rapiers.

Since Int is key to alchemy and his Grit pool, which can be spent on Swashbuckler deeds, it would be best to keep this build to as few key attributes as possible. Dex and Int will be key. However he will still need enough will/con/str to get by.

How about using the Whirligig Saw as the Sawblade Glaive? The Saw can be interpreted as being exotic since it comes from the DLC, which the Glaive already is.

Wouldn't the Urumi count as a whipsword?

Urumi 30 gp 1d6 1d8 18-20/x2 — 6 lbs. S

Commonly known as a whip sword, this deadly weapon is fashioned from one to four 5-foot-long, razor-sharp blades of flexible steel. The weapon is wielded by whipping the blades at one’s opponent. The coiled blade is fine and flexible enough to be worn as a belt.

I'd probably go with Investigator over alchemist in the above build, but that's just me. Studied Combat seems really fitting.
