The other three prisoners emerge from the bushes, carefully approaching you now that the battlefield is clear. All three of them look somewhat bedraggled, their clothes a little ragged and carrying a variety of stains. One of them is a young woman, with matted dirty-blonde hair. Despite her obvious fatigue, her blue eyes sparkle with intellect. She's coming towards you, and the two men are sort of following along behind her. There's a young man, slightly overweight with mussed dark hair, and an older, severe-looking bald man whose full, brown beard is streaked with grey. He looks just as well worn as the rest of them, but underneath the grit his clothes is of higher quality, his shirt fastened with buttons of mother-of-pearl instead of tied with leather thongs, for instance. His coat looks like it's stylish beneath the grime, too. "Gods above, I thought we were going to die here," the girl says, by way of greetings, "Thank you! I'm Alice." The black-haired man nods along, apparently willing to let her do the talking. "Greg." he grunts. The bald man just stands there, not really looking at anyone.
Dai's arrow takes the last hobgoblin in the eye, and he falls dead on the ground. No reason to drag this on. You're left standing in relative silence, the battle over. Iris and Zelligar only, perception DC 25: You notice a large crack on the eastern outside of the bridge, near where the base connects to the cliff's edge.
Dai finally manages to land a solid blow, striking the hobgoblin's nose with the heel of his hand, driving a shard of bone up into the hobgoblin's brain. Lavinia puts her target to sleep, leaving only one hobgoblin standing. He growls, sending another arrow at the witch. It might well turn out to be his last. Arrow vs Lavinia: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25, 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 Meanwhile, on top of the tower, an archer tries to wriggle its way out of Bran's grip. CMB: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 End of the round.
You go nuts. That said, you should be aware that I'm not particularly familiar with the setting. I've read the Stoneheart Valley book, Slumbering Tsar, and taken a glance at Rappan Athuk (although I hope to play through that one some day, so I've tried to not spoil it too much for myself.). As you might surmise from that list, I'm mainly in it for the dungeon crawls.
The pair continue stabbing at Iris, while the opportunitist sends another arrow towards Lovinia. Dagger vs Iris: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
The last hobgoblin still on the tower tries to shoot Zelligar, to keep him from getting the elf back on her feet again. Arrow vs Zelligar: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 Arianna recognizes a bunch of these. There's quite a few different kinds - some of them edible, some of them poisonous. There's enough to feed six people for a day in edible mushrooms. They're not all equally tasty - some of them are quite bland. You can also gather poisonous mushrooms, if you like.
Unable to back up further, two of the hobgoblins snarl and go for their backup daggers to stab at Iris. Dagger vs Iris: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
The one hobgoblin who has room to maneuver circles around the battle, and tries to shoot Lavinia. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18, 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 Meanwhile, Zelligar presents a new target for the archer on the northeastern tower, while the last hobgoblin tries to escape Bran's grasp. Arrow vs Zelligar: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25, 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Crit confirm vs Iris: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
You make your way back down the tunnel you came from, probably to Keshokkar's discomfort. You emerge in the narrow cave at the base of some stairs, quickly making your way up into the large cavern. There's quite a bit of noise in here - even if it's faint, the wind howling through the sinkhole makes for continuous background noise, and there's squeaking coming from the southern, upper part of the cavern you're standing in. You cross the cavern hurridly, and make for the tunnel leading west. The entrance is blocked by a large rock, which you have to inch your way past. The passage on either side is narrow, but unlike the rat tunnels, you can navigate it standing up, and it's only a couple feet before you make it through to the other side besides. You're standing in a tunnel, and can see faint light coming from up ahead. The tunnel splits in two just ahead of you, but one end clearly ends blindly after twenty feet or so. The other one leads to a set of roughly hewn stairs, leading down. The light is provided by a sinkhole, just like the one you saw earlier, albeit there's no heavy wind here. The sinkhole provides a window to the sky, a circle of grey clouds, with a couple drops of rain reaching you when you stand directly below it. The stairs lead down to a small cavern, where a thin layer of soil forms the floor. There's a variety of mushrooms growing here, as well as a pair of small openings leading to rat tunnels beyond.
Dai has already acted. Page breaks can be confusing; You rolled a 1 on your to hit, and the round hasn't progressed since then. Zelligar makes it to the base of the stairs. He can get to the top of the stairs with another double move. The archers drop their swords, step back to create a little bit of room before shooting at the party. Arrow vs Iris: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Bran grabs onto a hobgoblin, who tries to wriggle his way free. CMB to reverse grapple: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 With Bran lying flat on the rooftop, the archer still on the north-western tower decides to shoot at Lavinia instead. Arrow vs Lavinia: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 Crit Confirm vs Iris: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 Damn. There we go. Now people can act again.
Here is a map of the part of the level you've explored. It admittedly lacks the entrance room with the stairs, door and water, but the door itself is visible on the bottom edge. The Combat Map has the rat lair you're currently in. For ease of telling me how you want to leave, I've numbered each exit. Tunnel 1 through 4 generally seem to lead downwards. Tunnel 5 and 6 are much more level.
Let's see. 1d20 ⇒ 19
Goblin: "It's a trick! Fight to the last!" Bran forces the archer up close, and so he draws his longsword and hacks at the oversize warrior. An arrow comes flying at him from the northern tower, as well. Longsword vs Bran: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Willpower: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
None of the hobgoblins manage to clear their blindness this time around either. Woo crit! vs Bran: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 Everyone goes again.)
Dai doesn't quite manage to snatch arrows out of a hobgoblin's quiver Iris stabs one hobgoblin in the armpit. S willpower: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15 Atop the southeastern tower, a hobgoblin ducks under Tal'ariel's blade, and comes at her with his longsword Longsword: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27, 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (1, 7) + 4 = 12 From the other towers, arrows come flying towards the elf. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25, 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Near the cages, the hobgoblins continue to try to defend themselves. Will vs Blindness: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
We've accounted for Tal'ariel's actions, so everyone can go again. Woo longsword crit!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
The hobgoblin is currently using a longbow. Tal'ariel deals the hobgoblin a pretty nasty-looking gash on his cheek. He circles around her, whipping out a longsword in one hand and slashing at her. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27, 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 Arrows come flying at her from nearby towers. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Meanwhile, the hobgoblins near the cages do their best to defend themselves, forming up in a square-ish formation, back to back. Woo Longsword Crit!: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 Willpower 1: 1d20 ⇒ 14
The sergeant's eyes clear, and he starts fumbling at his belt for the crossbow that's hooked on there. Everyone else can go now.
Just for future reference, you can do a steal combat maneuver to take losely secured objects from an enemy, such as a fistful(let's say 10) of arrows. Bran breaks the dragon's neck for good measure, before healing washes over him. On the other side of the bridge, a hobgoblin manages to bat Iris' blade aside with his own, his blind eyes staring wildly ahead from under his helmet. Dai hits the hobgoblin in front of him in his armored chest. He takes a half-step back, but suffers little actual harm from the blow. Out on the plains, the prisoners continue to hide in the bushes, watching the fight. Tal'ariel
