I love playing Pathfinder Society on here. Let me start with that. I often enjoy it even more than I did when I did it in person, since on here THERE'S ACTUAL FRICKIN' ROLE-PLAYING.
However, there's a bit of a problem for playing Pathfinder Society on here, and that is the total inability to change an avatar's name after 10 posts. Outside of PbP, you can change anything you want about your character prior to their first adventure past 1st-level, enabling you to tweak certain details without having to have it perfect before playing, or to outright recycle and reincarnate a character completely after finding out you didn't like it. I've got a couple characters who fit both these bills: One whose name I would like to slightly change, and another whom I think I want to entirely scrap and replace with a different character. I should be able to do that, but as it presently stands, I'm stuck with them because I play them on here (for what it's worth, I have nowhere else to play them; Pathfinder Society in my area shriveled up and died a few years ago now).
I know there are difficult technological obstacles to this, I understand it would probably take a considerable amount of time, and/or other concerns that prevent Paizo from wanting to lift the 10-post cap on name-changing. Would it help any if I were to suggest the following?:
- Redesignate Pathfinder Society characters to be an entirely different kind of alias from aliases that are not Pathfinder Society characters.
- Rather than outright removing the post cap for changing Pathfinder Society character names, raise it dramatically (say, to 200 posts) so that a character whose entire history of play is on this site's PbP Forums can STILL have the option of changing their name by the time the character has adventured enough to reach level 2.
PLEASE consider this request seriously. I only want to be able to do what I would have had no trouble doing if only I were playing these characters in-person, an option I no longer have.

This would be a request for the website feedback forum, and will likely get moved there.
However, it would be all for this change if Paizo software could accomodate it. As it is... I tend to add name designations to my headers. So new nicknmames and titles go in the editable headers that appear with my characters. It's imperfect, but it is what we have.
You can sign me to this petition, but I am not sure that 200 posts would be enough for character name changes. I've often done 200 posts or more in a single scenario...

Unfortunately, the limit on posts vs changing the avatar name is not a granular setting. We also have limitations we impose to prevent duplicate names in our system that we have to consider (having duplicates is not friendly to how we formulate user/alias URLs). This is something myself, the PFS team and Tech Team would need to mull over to find a workable solution, but we do appreciate this sort of feedback. If there's anything else you can think of that would be beneficial to PFS or our online campaign options, please let us know!

Not really, in most cases. Often most are gender neutral, such as Venture Captain or Noble Title. I wouldnt be oppossed as much as figure it might be better to start small. Plus, it might be another niftty tool for online play if a DM can click on a VC tag while they are posting as an npc VC, and back off later on.
Plus, it would be really cool for those characters that earned the rank in play.

I've found myself now with another character, still level 1, with one adventure under her belt and about halfway through her second, who I'd like to completely redo. I'm REALLY hoping something can come of this request. Those of us who can only participate in Organized Play online still deserve to have all the options of those who play in person.
An individual petition system makes sense to me (though I acknowledge that would mean a little more work for site staff). On the other hand, if Paizo didn't care about the option of real people arbitrating whose case merited a rename and who not, I suppose it could be delegated to a program that just made sure the desired new name was still unclaimed (which you already have). Raising the cap to something like 1,000 posts might work, too; plenty of room for changing for almost any Society character, but someone like me, for example, couldn't just shock everyone by suddenly Hiding In Your Toaster (and again, I have no idea what the technical obstacles to this would be, but it makes the most sense to bifurcate aliases into PFS characters, who'd get leeway, and anything else, which would be more restricted).

Hey folks, updates on this request are pretty unlikely during our convention season. As this is a change that would impact some base-level infrastructure for the organized play system and the forums, it requires more work than it would seem on the surface. We have other projects on the docket that are at a higher priority at the moment, and we cannot promise any sort of deliverable or ETA when requests like this are posted.

Thanks for the reply.
Is it at least somewhere down there on the docket? I am not a web designer and don't know the details, but I understand and appreciate that it wouldn't be the the easiest process. Still, I think it's a worthy cause since it impacts so many players, and I definitely have a character or two of my own whose name I really want to be able to either tweak or straight-up rewrite.

So I just started PbP and ran into this.
Is this an ok thread to hold some conversations about the topic?
Is it ok to run a level 1 character as an alias, so that you can change the name on the finalized character at level 2?
This still makes a pile of waste aliases though.
I don't see why not. You may also choose to delete the aliases that are unused if i'm not mistaken.

@DM Livgin: try this link here
there you'll find your aliases and if you can still delete them, you'll see a Delete button

I did not understand that, but I do have a few characters whose names could use tweaking and asking staff to politely do each one seems REALLY counter-productive and a waste of their time that could be used doing things like:
1. Refining the SpamWall
2. Aiding Customer Service with CS issues
3. Adding more important QoL improvements back to the site (like the sidebar)
I'm not quite parsing the above comment, though... is it a complaint that players play characters that have different genders than their players, or that the name gets locked and there's no good way to change the name if the character has their gender identity shift either through rebuild or just story?
GM Aerondor |
The problem is the name getting locked. You Play Angus McBrute as a level 1 barbarian, but by the time you are level two, you feel like doing a full rebuild into Princess Peppertop the Kitsune enchanter.
Yeap, we can change the picture. Yeap, we can change the chronicle name. But if the character was a PBP one, you can't change the character name.
The only way around this at the moment is to create an alias for Princess Peppertop and start posting as her, and when the reporting form comes round ,remember to note to your GM that the name that pops up in the reporting portal will be wrong.
Either that or keep posting with the name Angus, but the rest changed.
I do understand why there needs to be some traceability in names though. If I was posting as Angus in a discussion forum and then when the heat got too bad decided to change my name, that could make things awkward for a future person who decided to claim the name of Angus.
