Best Magus archetype

Advice

We have a dispute, which archetype or combination of archetypes is the best magus. What is your opinion?

What are your criteria for "best"?

Damage output? If yes, sustained over time or one or two bursts? Utility? Support?

Different archetypes suit different party roles.

As a lover of all things magus... All of them! ... well, most of them. Start taking away "magus stuff" like spell combat or spellstrike and I begin to have concerns.

Here's a ranked list of all of them. There's no single best one, of course; the Bladebound, Eldritch Archer, Hexcrafter, and Magic Warrior are all top-notch choices, each with a different area of expertise.

We bet on the criterion of damage and versatility...

That's two contradictory criteria, and you haven't mentioned level yet.

IMO, Hexcrafter. First off, brand in your spellbook removes any question about spellcombatting with a cantrip. 2nd off, slumber. Coup de Gras tends to be insta-dead, so your damage is "all of it". 3rd, hexes on top of arcana is nothing but increased versatility.

level 6-8

The straight magus is nothing to sneeze at.

I was wondering what does it mean by I can't use the spell once per day for the Eldritch Archer archetype of the Magnus

Hi Zar1995.

This is a totally new question, so you're better off starting your own thread (often people won't notice that you've asked a new question and will answer the original post in a thread, so your question might go unanswered)

Now to answer your question, the Eldritch Archer gets a Bonded Item like a wizard. The wizard's bonded item comes with a few advanatages, one of which is that it lets them spontaneously cast 1 extra spell per day (any spell they know). The text in Eldritch archer is stating that your bonded item does NOT grant that ability (you cannot spontaneously cast a spell from your bonded item).

EDIT: PS it's "Magus", not "Magnus" (no "n"), it's a common mistake. That'll help with searches etc in future.

Cool thank you for the reply it makes a lot of sense now

No worries.

If you're just getting into the Magus, I can't recommend reading THIS GUIDE highly enough. It does a great job of breaking down the rules for you (Also I'd show it to your GM at least a few days before playing if you're wanting to play a Magus).

If you're going for Eldritch Archer a lot of it won't apply, but it'll probably help you understand the class.

You could also look up Kurald's guide to the Magus. There's a thread still going on here for it, and Kurald is an active member who answers questions fairly promptly.
