Gunslinger's damage seems erratic what do?

So I was just noticing one of my players was having mixed feeling about the gunslinger class. His damage seems to Erratic for most part he doesn't do much. However occasionally He gets one of those x4 crits and Has a huge Spike. That and his damage is effected heavily by the touch AC. Overall it makes him seem very inconsistent. Some fights putting Big enemies down to quickly and in others feeling he doesn't contribute much to the fights. I was just wondering if anyone else Has these problems with the class and what they did to alleviate it. (This is mostly a low level problem so far. hes gone from 1-7th)


Can you tell us about his build?


gunslinger's damage is bad till lv5, then it becomes really good once you get dex to damage. Then it just gets better and better.

He should have the feat that let him be able to full attack and have deadly aim and rapid shot. so at lv7 he should be getting off 3 attacks, with dex +4 for deadly aim.

He should be hitting more often than anyone else since touch AC is lower than normal AC.


I think he took pretty standard range feats Ill have to take a good look at his character sheet when I see him next. What would be some of the must have feats I might be able to remember If he has them. I feel like he has rapid reload, precise shot, and Point blank shot That is all I can remember atm.

Hmm that is probably where he is messing up no deadly aim or rapid shot.


Now that I think about it I feel like he was trying to get Shot on the run ASAP so I think he has dodge as well.

the key to gunslinger is trading accuracy for damage and getting off a full attack.

All classes can trade accuracy for damage and do, the trick is, the gunslinger is likely to hit with his last shot at -9 below full bab because going against touch AC. 7+5(dex)+1(magic gun)+1(pbs) +13, comparable to any full bab class. but while they are going against AC 20, you're up against AC 13. So you both take rapid shot penalty and deadly aim penalty and they and you are now at +9 for first two and +4 for second, but you need to roll a 4 and a 9 to hit while they need an 11 and 16. Plus their ranged attacks need str for damage, you get dex, so you're already packing more per hit.

Now, not getting full attacks, not taking deadly aim and rapid shot, not being close enough for touch ac, will drop his damage, each dropping it by a good amount
