Try to be both original and faithful to the setting (as much as we know about it, at least)! Here's one to start us out:
Iomedae's Light
Iomedae's Light is a mobile strike craft built around a single powerful forward laser battery. What makes it distinctive is the 'Divinity Node', a device that allows a paladin to channel the power to smite evil through the ship and into its laser and shield emitters. The Iomedae's Light sacrifices some conventional firepower and protection, excelling primarily against interstellar abominations of evil, be they sinister void beasts or Infernal hellships fueled by the suffering of the lost.

A 1pp and its 3pp counterpart, because hey, plenty of us use psionics.
Ships should probably allow a measure of externalizing/scaling-up abilities by default, in particular stuff like one-man fighters.
Geomancer Custom
These one-man fighters are adapted to their intended owner's preferred form of energy manipulation. In addition to standard scale-amplification functions, Geo-Customs can shunt up to one point of Burn per round as a free action to the shield generators if online. This reduces the shields regeneration value by one per point of burn for the remainder of the encounter, and cannot be performed if it would bring this value below 1/rd
Astral Shell
Aegii channeling their abilities through this vessel may not only apply certain customizations to the ship as usual, but also grant the effects of Invigorating Suit and any Environmental adaptations (swim speed, burrowing, darkvision, UW breathing) to the ship and the occupants within!

The Ironwood Legion: A fleet of immense ships made out of ironwood and piloted by elite druids. The ships are powered by nature magic, and are 100% sustainable ecosystems in their own right. On each one is a forest, where the druids have created the most effective oxygenation trees known to intelligent life.

Hellknight Capital Ship: Axiomatic Fist Class
Designed to be a colossal bastion of firepower and rigid order, this imposing ship is a mobile fortress. Massive, gothic, and bladed, the Axiomatic Fist is intended to instill the fear of law into anyone who dares support chaos. This type of ship often serves as the core of any Hellknight fleet.
Kasatha Dreadnought: Shrike Class
The kasatha have designed these small and incredibly mobile with their four arms in mind, with piloting handled with one set of arms, and gunning handled with another. Angular and lightweight, these ships generally have a set of laser guns and powerful engines, although they lack FTL capabilities.

Goblin Junkship: The Burninator
This ship is a cobbled together nightmare that somehow manages interplanetary travel in defiance of all known laws of science and magic. Despite its fragile appearance, this ship is highly radiation and fire resistant, mainly because it's piloted by goblins, but also due to the nature of its primary weapon system, the Sun Gun. This weapon disgorges plasma skimmed from nearby stars, effectively making it the ultimate fire based weapon in existence. The fact that it usually propels the ship away from the enemy after being fired is generally seen as a feature rather than a detriment by the Goblins onboard.

Here's a few more ship ideas.
Orc Battleship: Reaver Class
These ramshackle ships are among the more powerful orc spaceships. Bristling with weapons and spikes, every ship is different in some way. While one may be incredibly fast with powerful long range capabilities, another may be essentially a large boarding vessel for orc warriors to pour out of.
Rakshasa Yacht: Decadent Embrace Class
Built with the height of luxury in mind, these grand ships are among the best that money can buy. The ship comes with excesses such as a matter replicator designed exclusively for crafting the finest champagne and a fully staffed zero-g spa. While they may fall behind it offensive capabilities, they have some of the most powerful shielding systems of any ship, combining soul-powered warding magic and powerful energy shields.
Dragon Banner Ship: Metallic Glory Class
Often utilized by the battle fleets of the metallic dragons, these collosal ships are one of the few that can fit the great wyrm's titanic frames. Built to be a command center capable of sending orders across vast distances, they have powerful shielding and comms systems. The ships are a masterful combination of technological prowess and arcane might.

I think that's far more powerful than they're likely to go for, at least at start.

"A Fools Errand", Light Freighter, Personal Yacht, Current Owner: The Blakros Family (On Loan to Starfinder Grand Lodge)- Built for both luxury and adventure, the Blakros Clan's personal yacht has a long history of service with the Starfinders. Built two hundred years ago by Teela Blakros, the wife of the great Baron Blakros, she commissioned the building of "The Fool's Errand" as a birthday present for her husband. Now the ship is still the backbone of the Starfinder Exploration fleet to this very day. Handcrafted by the legendary shipwrights at the Hamon Spacedock, this speedy vessel was designed for the purpose of exploring and surviving all the dangers that the Universe has to offer. Though the vessel can hold a crew of twenty, it's designed to be flown by as few as four operators at any given time. It's lightly armored with cannons both fore and aft, with a gunner's turret on the ship's underside. But the ship's guns are only part of the "Fool"'s arsenal. It's real strength lies in it's superior engines which allows the "Fool" to outrace almost any threat.
"Invincible", Destroyer, Hellknight Warship, Current Owner: The Order of the Nail- All Hellknight ships are designed and built at the Holy Shipyards of Asmodeus, which allows the Hellknight Orders to maintain perfect secrecy on the development of new ships and weapons. The sole exception to this practice was the "Invincible", a deadly warship that was built by the Ratfolk Darkwhisker Clan on Akiton. According to legend, High Enforcer Hogarth the Twice Feared petitioned his superiors to allow him access to funds to hire the Darkwhisper Ship builders to design and outfit a new class of heavy destroyer for the Order of the Nail. Sources are unclear about why this situation came about but there are rumors that Hogarth's design specifications were simply beyond the skill of the Order's architects so he was forced to bring his designs to the Darkwhiskers, who are known Galaxy wide for their revolutionary techniques in combining dark magic with science. The result of this unholy alliance is the "Invincible", a black and red nightmare of blood and titanium steel. Though it is classified as a heavy destroyer, the "Invincible" is outfitted with weapons for a vessel twice it's size and it possesses two PCP Cannons capable of punching holes in even the largest capital ship.
"The Drunken Lady", Light Cruiser, Anti-Slavery Privateer Vessel, Current Owner: The Church Cayden Cailean- Despite beginning it's life as a luxury cruise liner, it has since been retrofitted into one of the most feared anti-piracy vessels on the outer rim. After the signing of the Andoran Pact, Anti-Slavery activists with the Church of Cayden Cailean found themselves in an awkward position: they had managed to force most of the major mega corps to place some restrictions on the slave trade that was threatening to exploit the entire outer rim but they also had no way to enforce these laws. Enter Wan Garren, a self made business man and former slave who offered to fund the creation of a volunteer navy to enforce the Andoran Pact. The center piece of this new organization was the Nova Star, a luxury liner that was on it's way to the junkyard before Garren purchased the vessel and financed it's retrofit into light cruiser with two full rows of plasma cannons, fore and aft mounted lasers, and two hundred Hellion class light torpedoes. They renamed this lovely ship "The Drunken Lady" and gave her to the Church of Cayden Cailean to use as an Antipiracy/Antislavery privateer vessel. It's one of the few military vessels to have a full working bar and a swimming pool.
"Bone Collector", Dreadnought, Pirate Ship, Current Owner: Unknown, Either the Red Fist Army or the Shang Brotherhood- Once a relic of a long forgotten war, the ship that became the "Bone Collector" was found floating derelict in space before being acquired by "Black" Tom Mercer who retrofitted the vessel into the ultimate pirate ship. Since few pirate fleets could afford to run, let alone acquire a dreadnought, "Black" Tom's impressive acquisition made him the most feared pirate in the Galaxy and he used the "Bone Collector" to hold entire systems for ransom for twenty years until his death when the ship was given to a new owner. Since it's premiere on the Galactic scene, the ship has had numerous owners, each using the vessel once or twice and then either selling it or abandoning it. This has lead to numerous myths about "Bone Collector" being cursed or unlucky but the truth about the ship's reputation is mostly built on lies. Yes the Bone Collector's weapons and armor are impressive but it's massive size makes it hard to maneuver and also impossible to keep fully crewed up. "Bone Collector" requires two thousand crewmen to run at full capacity and even "Black" Tom could never seemed to keep more than a few hundred men and women on board at any given time. Then there's the various infestations of alien creatures living in the lower decks and about the massive amount of power required to keep the "Bone Collector"'s life support functioning. On top of that, "Bone Collector" is famous and anyone who captains her instantly becomes the talk of the galaxy, and while pirates crave fame, they don't enjoy getting caught after being recognized at the food dispenser. Plus, piracy is a sneaky profession and it's hard to sneak up on merchant freighters when your vessel is 1100 feet long. Currently "Bone Collector" is sitting in the private space dock of an unknown pirate fleet, awaiting some one to purchase it.
"Night Feather", Fast Attack Ship, Experimental Stealth Ship, Current Owner: Unknown, possible the Absalom Station Security Force- The Castrovel Engineering Cooperative is an Elven design firm that typically askew work for planetary navies and corporate military interests. Despite being the number one luxury ship design firm in the known galaxy, they tend to avoid military contracts out of fear that such associations would harm their design process. Elven Ship Builders prefer to hand make their ships, constructing them with carefully sourced materials and magical crafting methods. To mass produce something for a military outfit would be...upsetting to their aesthetics. But the Night Feather Project was a rare chance to show traditional craftsmanship had it's place in galactic society. Named after the Empyreal Lord Tanagaar, the end result of this project yielded a long range fast attack stealth ship with a five man crew that was designed to disappear from all sensors and deliver high yield torpedoes to their target. Delivered as a proof of concept to the Absalom Station Security Force, "Night Feather was so impressive that it was immediately seized by the ASSF and all design specs were confiscated. It was never officially brought into full production, though several ships bearing a similar delta wing profile as "Night Feather" have been seen before and after several key hostile targets were destroyed on the outer rim. If the original proto-type still exists (and that is very likely, Elf ships last as long as the Elves who fly them) then it remains a secret project shrouded in Black budgets and top secret clearances.
"The Last Kiss", Frigate, Current Owner: The Drow- Almost nothing is known about this fearsome black vessel, just as almost nothing is known about the Drow. But survivors of raids on the Outer Galactic Rim claim that "The Last Kiss", an informal nickname by those who have seen it and lived, often flies at the head of several raiding fleets. Since Drow prefer light and fast attacks, most of their ships are small, never rising above the level of Corvette or Fighter. "The Last Kiss" with it's twisted shape and spidery wings seems to be different, it is a true Frigate, designed to provide fast and hard support for quick attacks on small outposts and space stations.
"Thundermaker", Mobile Weapons Platform/Dreadnought, Hybrid Ship, Current Owner: Holy Order of the Anvil- Designed and built by the Dwarven Engineering Guild at the Five Kings Spacedock, The "Thundermaker"'s unique design came about as a result of a barroom bet between the Dwarven Engineering Guild and the Exploratory Mining Consortium's Cartography Council after an argument about the possibility of building a weapon that could crack astroids in half to make mining more cost effective. The resulting design came to be called "Thundermaker" and while the Dwarven Engineers lost the bet, they proved the concept possible and submitted the design to the Paladins of the Holy Order of the Anvil as a potential replacement for the "Widowmaker", the aging dreadnought capital ship that defends the Dwarven Colonies. Ten years later, "Thundermaker" was born. It is a highly unique vessel that only requires two hundred crew members to operate despite being a quarter of a mile long. This is due to the fact that "Thundermaker" is not a traditional ship in the true sense of the word but a mobile weapon's platform with a hyperdrive attached. It can be piloted to the edge of a system, soak up several billion watts of stellar radiation, then it can power up it's primary weapon: a one thousand foot long cannon that fires one ten second burst of pure kinetic energy. This burst can vaporize entire cities from a distance of up to .5 light years from it's location. Obviously "Thundermaker" is best used on planetary defenses or relatively stationary targets. During the Siege and Ymir Prime, "Thundermaker" essentially wiped the Orc city of Bluestone off the face of existence with a single shot.

This ain't exactly Wish here. If "allows you to use a basic situational class ability in exchange for some conventional stats" is TOO POWERFUL for vehicular combat, then the basic design premise would be terminally flawed.
Especially since other than CAS, you won't find many targets; the odd possessed-vessel aside most targets are gonna be sans-alignment, even if their occupants are on the vile side of the spectrum. Sure, those are kobold-eating slavers over there, but their ship? it's usually just a ship.

"The Queen of the Planes", Luxury Liner, Gambling House, Current Owner: Maeaithwen Falalond - Of all the semi legal gambling establishments in the Universe, the most famous, most vile, most hated is "The Queen of the Planes". "The Queen" offers it's patrons a chance to bet on literally anything: gladiator matches, deadly obstacle courses, vile debauchery with willing (or unwilling) participants and a litany of other unsavory scenarios where the wealthy and the powerful make or lose all the money they can spend. Most people would argue that such a vessel would be a prime target for the authorities but the "Queen of the Planes" is not such easy prey: when threatened with discovery, the Queen is enchanted to simply shift into another plane of existence. First the elemental planes, then the plane of chaos, and others. It's all part of the enchantment created by the ship's captain, Maeaithwen Falalond, who noticed that most of the there were few rules in the outer spaces of the other planes and that as long as she could keep the ship moving around the planar spaces, it would keep her patrons happy and keep her out of jail.

All who Are as One, Dominion of the Black Worldship, Unknown Purpose, Current Owner: Unknown
Very little is known about this ship, save for it's immense size and it's powerful eldritch weapons.Often mistaken for a small moon, it's horrifying reality is revealed once one gets up close. Made from strange, dark metal and the semi-alive bodies of coutless creatures, non can claim to have been inside it and escaped with their sanity intact. It's name is only known from strange psychic burbling gleaned by scrying magic, and even then one cannot be sure if it's the name of the ship itself or the name of it's master. Having only shown up recently, things do not bode well.

Is it? We don't even know what the mechanics for space combat are yet.
It's probably going to be similar to the mechanics for existing ship combat, only the ballista become energy canon, scaled up to penetrate derma alloy instead of mere wood. Starfinder like it's cousin is still going to put the emphasis on personal combat.
They're not going to be making this into a naval minatures game anymore than Traveller went that way, maybe less.
Jamie Charlan |
Traveller at least has fully functional ship combat. It's several steps up over any of the vehicle combat currently in pathfinder. Even when abstracting, it did work well enough, while you're still counting things in squares one way or another with pathfinder, no matter what one may say about no minis.
Will starfinder also have similar weapon scaling? In pathfinder, a cannon might have only 8d6 (roll low and even a direct hit might not even do more than disable but not destabilize a level 1 commoner) and often finds itself dealing less damage than a guy swinging a sword as a result. A lot less, in fact. And that's before sword guy gets the second of his 4-5 attacks this round while the cannon goes on the reload with three guys for next turn.
Meanwhile in traveller that 1d6 light laser cannon on your 10t starfighter does 50-300 against personal/vehicle scale targets, probably punching a clean hole through the tank, and that heavier 2d6 cannon leaves *absolutely nothing* where the marine in top-tech-level battledress once was as it continues on towards whatever it actually got aimed at. 'Course it also cost about as much as said tank anyways...

It's not quite so significant in Traveller because individuals don't end up with massive quantities of hit points. An 8d6 cannon hit on a Traveller character won't often leave them upright. I agree though that there should be some scaling effect for personal, vehicle, and spaceship weapons.

Starship battles will be a significant element in the game, with their own combat system utilizing miniatures, but not as common as ordinary character-scale combat.
There was a lot of good information in the playtest. The Know Direction video goes into it at about 55 minutes in.
A powerful, forward-facing cannon or a ship with bonus shields against evil outsiders are distinct possibilities.

Abyss's Fury Captained by a glabrezu and crewed by babaus, this warship is incredibly fast for it's size. It uses it's speed to get enemies within the range of it's main weapon: dretches stuffed with explosives.
The Apocalypse Vessel This warship is captained by a thanadaemon, and crewed by cuestodaemons. It is capable of weaponizing soul gems to devastating effect, ranging from necrotic blasts to completely annihilating other ships, depending on the power of the soul.
Asmodeus's Might This massive ship, captained by an ice devil and crewed by bearded devils, has many portals to hell, allowing for easy resupplying. Many of these portals are actually on the ship's weapons, enabling them to shoot bursts of concentrated hellfire.
t?S2u9rh38r8Wy!e6bF This protean ship is not really captained or crewed, as it just morphs into crazy mind-boggling shapes and teleports around a lot. It does, however, have excellent cloaking devices enabling it to bombard unsuspecting things with warpwaves.
Eternity This kind of ship is rarely seen, showing up on occasion to fulfill the mysterious Aeon's goals. It is piloted completely remotely, it emits a field that nullifies any energy that enters it, and is capable of counterattacking with antimatter weapons.
01001100 01100001 01110111 Crewed by axiomites and inevitables, this ship has a highly advanced AI as a pilot. This ship uses high speed projectiles as weapons, designed to destroy specific targets, such as weapons.
Joy of the Stars Crewed by bralani and captained by a ghaele, this ship is extremely maneuverable, capable of moving through asteroid fields with ease. This ship manipulates gravity as it's weapon, smashing ships and other objects.
Transcendence Crewed by avorals and captained by a leonal, this ship specializes in adaptability, capable of switching out parts to suit the task at hand. It's weapons are just as adaptable, and their modes include, fire, cold, projectiles, and kinetic energy.
Heaven's Light Crewed by hound archons and piloted by a trumpet archon, this ship is surrounded by a nimbus of light. This nimbus actually protects it from the damage from the near light-speed dashes it makes at it's enemies.

Some of them are some of them are slightly unhinged, but it's the ship's A.I. brain, or rather it's replacement who's driving the ship. Deep in ship's bowels rests a brain of an actual Kraken, hoplessly addicted to machine fluids it can suck from some of the derelict ships. It's mostly kept agreeable and lucid by regular doses administered by crew, but woe upon a ship that catches it's attention in one of it's craving fits.

This is a smuggler, or to be specific a blockade runner class corvette. It is rumored that the ship was created by a crazed wizard obsessed with finding Golarion. The lightly armed and armored ship was built with an oversized drive core and is thought to be the fastest ship ever built. But the true genius of its creation was a soul gem(with a trapped Ghost) combined with the device mages and paladins use to amplify their abilities to ship scale. It allows the ship to go incorporeal for a few hours at a time allowing it to slip past satellite defenses, planetary shields, or blockades of ships without being detected. As a side effect of the "cloaking" device the ship has become haunted with doors opening and closing by themselves, objects moving about on their own, and odd noises and voices heard at random times.

I imagine that like Traveller ship combat will be abstracted to work on a 2d playing field.
Spaceships will operate on a heavily scientific basis with perhaps a magical element thrown in to make FTL possible, much like the Dragonstar game.
Jamie Charlan |
Could also be that the FTL method is inherently hostile to the gods. One of those "it shortens the distance between point A and B or else it gets the hose again" (ab)uses of basic physical law combined with ridiculous energy outputs, that because it's so mundane the god of magic cannot simply go "that spell don't work no more".
In such a case, probably logistics are what gets the magic. Infinite air so much cheaper and easier than the technical versions. Cheap low energy light. Internal telepathic or voiced comms that aren't dependent on circuitry to individual sections. Dimensional storage that doesn't require a reactor.
Added bonus: We need that kind of reality-violating level of power anyways if the ships are to be worth having over simply running around in space as mid-level characters (quite literally, feet and all) then they need to be something that offers power above and beyond an individual adventurer's own "power". Primitive kingdoms and continents are probably entirely at the mercy of some moon-carving sniper fighter's guns or a bomber's little torpedo bay (to say nothing of planet-buster capital ships), which sounds horrible until you realize the party barbarian could in fact just spend an hour systematically cleaving the capital unhindered, or the wizard just send the entire place to his favorite hell (for extra profit). It's only natural that the scaling up into the vehicles those walking disasters use would.... make what they can already do a little faster and/or easier.

"The Falconer" Heavy Carrier/Colony Ship, Current Owner: The Tengu Itinerant Fleet
The Falconer is the largest ship in the Tengu Itinerant (The largest Tengu community, which is composed of a large fleet of ships constantly moving from place to place). It contains most of the fleet's Fighter units, as well as storage for supplies, and room for their citizens. It is also the only ship which most outsiders to their community are allowed on, most other ships are usually restricted to non-Tengus for privacy or security reasons. Onboard is the market hub, arguably one of the largest stationed off-planet, approximately 50% of the hydroponics units in the fleet, schooling and housing, docking and hangar bays (civilian and military, respectively), recreational areas (holodeck, gaming hubs, VR arenas, and a unique sport with such complex rules that generally it takes around 3 1/2 years to figure out exactly how to play), and a petting zoo. It is the largest ship in the fleet.
"The Raven's Eye" Cyber-Warfare, Network & Server Ship, Current Owner: The Tengu Itinerant Fleet
The ship responsible for handling all networks, communications, and information storage in the fleet. There are backups for all the info across the fleet, but this is the only ship that contains EVERYTHING. The reason it's currently military-only access is that about 10 years ago the Itinerant upgraded it's software, and also installed a unique system (stolen from some abandoned military base somewhere) that will automatically hack into and download all the information on every ship that comes into it's range. This is more of a security measure, but they still keep the info just incase they can use it later on.
Archangel Class Light Frigate
There are currently 12 of these in the Tengu Itinerant Fleet, all of which are military vessels. Crewed with about 50-60 people, these are smaller ships that aren't worth much for attacking, but are excellent defense ships. Armed with 3 heavy lasers facing forwards, and 4 smaller cannons on each side, they can wreak havoc on attackers in front of them while keeping back fighters or drones coming from their other sides.
Freehold Class Colony Ship
Civilian ships in the fleet have various classes and designs, but these are the most commonly seen in the fleet. They have onboard hydroponics, housing, and limited forms of education and entertainment. This class ship isn't very big compared to the Falconer, each ship being only 1/10th of it's size (these are average for colony ships. The Falconer is just HUGE.) Usually only members of the fleet or of their race (Tengu) are ever allowed onboard, though family friends are allowed to visit sometimes, even if they aren't Tengu. They must be given clearance from the fleet, and have a Tengu voucher onboard the ship, for this to happen.
Jackdaw Fighters
Small fighter ships that, appearance wise, seem very similar to hang-gliders. The pilot lays down and crawls in through the back, and holds two handles that act as steering mechanisms as well as aiming and firing the weapons. There are 4 wings that extend backwards from it at around a 30 degree angle, each wing having twin lasers on it. The ship itself has limited shields, but most of it's defense comes from it's immense speed and maneuverability. Pilots come out of training capable of taking off, performing a bombing run, and landing back in their hangar in less than 30 seconds. The Falconer has 12 hangers for these, each hangar having 32 fighters. A favorite tactic of the Tengus is to launch 8 fighters, wait 10 seconds, and launch 8 more, and repeat that process until the order is given to evacuate, stop launching, or that they won. In the first two, they stop launching fighters, and wait for the last ones to come back before moving on.

I have some pretty neat concept drawings. How do I post photos?
You have to link them, as the paizo boards don't allow pictures.
Use something like this: Link to an external picture: Shamira, Mammoth Rider from the Realm of the Mammoth Lords

Eoxian 'Anbasador Transport.' This light freighter has been turned into a luxury craft for ferrying passengers to and from Eox. Equipped with a FULL life support system, as well as luxury amenities for both crew and up to 2 passengers, this bone-ship is primarily used for the transport of VIPs to and from Eox, mainly business CEOs and pact-world politicians.

I'm coming up with a shipbuilder in another star system that has friendly ties to the Pact Worlds. The Star Queendom of Temis has a fleet of starships with a nasty sting, and are building a version of their latest guided missile destroyer as a warship for the Pact Worlds.

The Chevette-class light freighter is an obnoxiously cheap little scow of a freighter that is the least expensive thing you could possibly slap a drift engine on. Technically even the twin linked laser cannons mounted on its wings are an "option," though only the most destitute and desperate to have some starship, any starship, will go without purchasing them.
Its power source, a Pulse Brown energy core that puts out a stingy 90 PCUs of power generation, is often nicknamed the "Pulse Brown Note" and its easily mistuned drift engine can cause nausea when activated. It is not a starship for the wealthy, or even for the comfortably middle-class.
For all its negative reputation, however, it has two good points: First, its ruggedly simplicity-uber-alles design means that very little can break in this small vessel. Second, that even though it is the cheapest, ugliest, and quite possibly the worst starship money can buy, it is a starship.
