Hotel has a breakfast restaurant and a bar that are delicious but a little pricy. They've also got a coffee kiosk with lots of grab n go foods. They've done a little cash only lunchtime grill before, not sure if they plan on that again or not. In the local area if you want to walk a block or two there are a range of restaurants ranging from fast food to sit down.

Sara Marie - would someone from Paizo please contact catering at the hotel and ask them about doing the lunchtime grab and go? Even dinner time as well?

Having that in 2015 was great! We missed it in 2016.

The other issue we saw last year was people being absolute pigs at the dinner when it came to dessert. Those who didn't get it right away were left with few if any choices. I saw people PILING cupcakes on their plate. At conferences I've been to lately, dessert is plated on the table, or if something like Cupcakes, each table gets a selection in the center of the table.

There are plenty of other non-hotel other options for eating no more than 5 minutes walking distance.

Sit down or takeout:
The pretty tasty Thai place across the street
The pretty tasty Hawaiian BBQ place across the street.
The less tasty and barely tolerable Denny's across the street.
Sharp's Roadhouse just down the street.
The kinda meh Daves Diner and Brews just down the street the other way.

Fast food
Taco Bell across the street.
Jack in the Box across the street.
The liquor store across the street.

Places like Bite Squad and DoorDash will go out further and deliver you food too as an option.

OOhh ... tell me more about the pretty tasty Thai place across the street!!!

Sharp's Roadhouse is very good, and has become my and my wife's "go to" any time we have time to sit down for food.

Besides good food and a really nice staff, if you sit in the bar you get the "Wheel of Booze" every half hour: they spin a wheel to pick the drink that is on special until the next spin. :-)

Tada! We went there last year and it was quite delicious. Then again, I might be biased because I could probably survive off pad thai and the spam musubi they have at the Hawaiian place...

Edit: If you have wheels, the Southcenter Mall is not too far down the hill, maybe 10 min. On top of shopping and movie theater, this adds a bunch of food options from various chains like Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory, BJs, Duke's Chowder House, Blue-C Sushi, etc.

Awesome, thanks!!!

I notice that their online menu does not list prices. What kind of $$$ are we looking at?

Friday morning almost the entire set of badges is picked up. We usually get through the line very quickly, I think the fastest was last year and it was between 30 and 45 minutes. After the bulk of packets are picked up we usually move things into the store.

Every other day goes even quicker.

One more $ than you listed in your question.

Seriously - it's an airport restaurant next to an airport hotel. The prices are better than the hotel food...but not by much.

No grab n go grill but my understanding is that the espresso bar has expanded its offerings.

We've put in a word about the desserts.

Thanks for the feedback!

Question about using laptops or other electronics during games at the con...

Will there be power plugs available? I would like to know if I can rely on using my laptop/smartphone to reference my PDFs, or if I should bring printed copies of relevant materials.

My laptop battery runs about six hours without a charge, which is only one full session.

Thanks!

It is extremely unlikely that you'll have a power plug nearby during PFS games, slightly more likely for lottery games in separate rooms (but still, I think not close to where you sit). I have a phone with external battery backup.

RyanH wrote:

It is as he says - in the PFS hall, most of the tables are away from the walls where the outlets would be, and there are not many outlets in them walls either.

That said, there is only one PFS slot in a row ever, so you could recharge between.

So this is my first time at Paizocon and myself and my wife are really excited. We missed the lottery stage as we just honestly didn't know about it. We have signed up for tyranny of the winds parts 1-2-3 for saturday morning through monday morning. We have built our new Pathfinder Roleplaying guild characters but I have a question.\

According to the guide we should only be gaining 1xp per session completed and it takes 3xp to level up. This means by the third game if we don't pick up any extras on friday or one of the other nights we will still be level 1. The requirements for the 3rd session is a level 3-7 character.

So my question is whether or not there is a way to play with the same characters that we have built through all three parts or do we have to just abruptly change characters for the last session?

We are more than willing to just write up our characters to level 3 on separate sheets and use them as if they were pregenerated and just have them not count towards our official characters. It just seems oddly designed that we can't show up to the con and play through the 3 parts to a campaign without having previously played 6 other sessions.

That series is one of only two that have that level jump in them; the developers determined that the story made the most sense at 3-7 for the last part.

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to make up your own "pregens"; you will have to use one of the official ones. You will be able to put the chronicle on your actual characters, though, to apply once they hit level 3. Then you can treat those characters as if they had played the scenario for all purposes. It's not the same as actually playing them, but it is close.

You could also try to trade for a different scenario for your third slot, and save playing part 3 for when your characters actually are 3rd level.

Thanks for the information. Im entirely new to the roleplaying guild so this is good to know. My only issue is that as far as I know the chronical is useless to me as the closest place I could play from where im.currently stationed is likely hours away. Unless anyone knows of anything near Minot ND.

Due to my location I just feel like this convention is going to be the only time I can take part in these and I just want to get as much out of it as I can.

Side note are we allowed to just play under leveled?

Look for online games that play in real-time, like on Roll20, or play-by-post games if you want to keep playing these characters.

Quote:

No, you must be within the scenario range. I think your best bet, if you want to play this series (it's a fun one), is to seek out some of the pickup games. Many modules provide 3 XP, so you could possibly find someone to run one some evening, and pick up one more scenario before part 3.

Grand Lodge

Aeolus, You can also play the same pre-gen in each of the Scenarios. Just use the 4th level PC for all three.

Then you're playing the same PC, getting XP credit for the future, and can play all three parts. You just have to weigh that against the fun of playing your own PC at 1st level.

edited....thanks, Majuba

Just to clarify - the Pregens are L.4 (or L.7), and if you hold the credit until your character levels up, you have to apply it at the level of the pregen (4 or 7). If your original character is still L.1, you can "apply down" and get credit, but the gold is marked to 500 flat.

So, Play your character in Parts 1 & 2, Play a pregen in Part 3 and assign it down (or hold until you are L.4).

Tony's suggestion to swap scenarios if possible may be the best idea, but I can see you wanting to finish the story line more than play your characters.

So how many people bring costumes to this kind of thing and are there contests for said costume wearers?

In the past, there have been a few in costume, but not a lot. If you come in costume, people will probably want to have their picture taken with you.

Sometimes Linda Z-P will leave the con, and Queen Abrogail Thrune will show up in her place. One of the Paizo types shows up as Valeros, too.

I think all of the costumes I've seen (<5 per year?) are Pathfinder NPCs and Iconics. It's definitely not a cosplay type of con.

Any seafood place you Seattle folk can recommend? I plan on the wife and I actually getting to go on a date without kids on Sunday.

Not looking for a touristy spot, unless it really is a great spot.

Grand Lodge

I like Chinooks... it's on a marina where many fishing boats moor for the off season. Salty's in West Seattle, Ray's Boat House, Ivars (nice that this one is walking distance from world-famous Pike Place Market... Anthony's on Pier 66 is also right near there).

There's lots of other nice restaurants that also do seafood, but all the ones I listed focus on it.

ALL of these are a drive from PaizoCon though.

My favorite is Chinooks because I lived near and frequented it. More locals than tourists because other than the marina with workboats, there's not much there to attract tourists. Not fancy, great desserts. The one's near pike place could make it more of an outing if you did the pike place market stuff (great geek store there.) (though they are more touristy)

I remember Salty's having an amazing Sunday morning Buffet (for a large some of money...), went there once. It's on the water in West Seattle... I used to dive off the beach there. Fond memories of that location as well.

A drive, or an easy ride on the Light Rail - Westlake Station for Pike's Place and all the rest around it.

Okay so If I pick up enough side games for 3 XP I'll get to level 3 and be able to play. Does anyone know of such a game already that needs another member? I am determined to do whatever I can to play this PC. I've been saving him for Paizocon for months now! Hands down my favorite character I've ever made. Any help would be appreciated, pickup games, one offs. Anything. If I can get 4XP I should get minimum 1 each from the first two sessions and be ready to go Level 3 for the last session.

My schedule is open after 5 on friday and after 6 on sunday. But I can dip out of a seminar a little early to get there in time for a game.

I would suggest looking for a module. Emerald Spire level 1 is quick and gives 3 XP.

Awesome. I found someone on the pre-game list who was looking for people to GM for a game. That should knock out 3XP and get me to level 2 (While also fitting in quite well with my character background) now I just need one more XP and I should be able to hit level 3 and finish out tyrany of the winds part 3. SOOOOOO Excited.

Anyone have suggestions for either friday or sunday evening to get that last 1 in?

There will be a board where people can post tickets that they end up not being able to use. You could go to the PFS room area and look for no shows. People from Portland are trying to organize some games.

Grand Lodge

And if I am somehow able to get into Erik Mona's game Sunday, you can have my PFS 8-99 ticket.

@ TheHeadCase, RyanH, Majuba, and EVERYONE,....

If Chinooks is a great seafood restaurant. And we love seafood. Yet it's a ways out from the Doubletree. But we're leaving Monday evening itinerary open for after-Con parties & plans and such....

....Why don't we get a tentative idea of how many people might like to go to Chinooks for dinner Monday night -- acknowledging that something else may spontaneously come up that lures us away?....

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

Possibly, we are only there Saturday through Tuesday morning and Saturday is my day for geeky stuff, then Sunday and Monday are reserved for me and my wife. Not sure if she's going to want to do some sight seeing or what Monday evening.

And thanks folks for the seafood recommendations.

Ok Seattle-ites (Seattleans?), what's your favorite coffee shack around the area?

Oooh, there's this Seattle coffee shop that I've heard is good. It's got the same name as a "Battlestar Galactica" character, so it's easy to remember: Starbucks.

I admittedly don't know Sea-Tac very well at all, but I can't think of a coffee place nearby.

Also, to prepare you for the reality, the coffee counter at the hotel serves Starbucks coffee, so you're gonna be stuck with that this weekend. :(

And when you most need it, just before the 8AM games, there'll be a line... I have canned coffee shots in my bag for making sure I can get my fix.
