Familiar Question

Rules Questions

Assume you have a familiar that is able to use wands.
Can he stay in your Handy Haversack or backpack, then reach out to tap you with buff wands?

I want a buff wand servant, but I'm concerned with the best way to keep it safe at the same time since I will likely be in melee combat.

Any better ideas?

Handy haversack is iffy, since it contains an extra-dimensional space with a limited quantity of breathable air. You can solve that problem by giving your familiar an ioun stone that lets it go without air, or a necklace of adaptation, but those are expensive solutions.

There's also the likelihood that a familiar intelligent enough to use wands probably won't take kindly to being kept in an extra-dimensional space when it could be experiencing adventure. Most improved familiars are enticed by the prospect of adventure and excitement of some sort (or capturing your immortal soul when you die).

Many improved familiars have flight, or excellent stealth options to keep them out of harm's way. What kind of familiar are you looking at? Sprite?

Any reasonable DM won't target your familiar just to be a dick.

However, if your familiar is using its actions in a combat situation, it should become a valid target. You shouldn't be able to have it just reach out of your extradimensional pocket. Sounds like cruel & unusual punishment. I'd also wonder how you're communicating with it, since if it's in another dimension, you can't expect to use any tradition familiar communication methods.

Either keep it safe, or assume the risks.
