An interesting question came up in a session yesterday.

Create Pit makes an interdimensional space.

Can a creature use teleportation effects while in such a pit?

Or is it an extension of the prime material plane, the extradimensional space used to effect such an extension in an instant, which also allows such things as a 30 foot deep pit on a second floor?

The Exchange

since it does not close, and there is a big hole to climb out of, im ok with teleporting out aswell

Scarab Sages

It does not say magical effects can not go through its aperture like Rope Trick does. So, you should be able to both teleport out and be able to throw a fireball into a pit trap.

It is what I thought also. Poor monster didn't get a chance though, the brawler of the group climbed down and AoO it to death.

You need planar-crossing teleportation to teleport in and out of an extradimensional space.

Silver Crusade

One that you're enclosed in, like a bag of holding.

A out doesn't cover you up or cage you.

It just shunts the ground a bit.

I have always treated pit spells as an extension of the current plane. Spellcasting is permitted both into and out of pit spells.

That's how we treat it as well. An extradimensional space isn't another plane.

Teleportation: A teleportation spell transports one or more creatures or objects a great distance. The most powerful of these spells can cross planar boundaries. Unlike summoning spells, the transportation is (unless otherwise noted) one-way and not dispellable.

Teleportation is instantaneous travel through the Astral Plane. Anything that blocks astral travel also blocks teleportation.

While endless adventure awaits out in the game—there are other worlds beyond these—other continents, other planets, other galaxies. Yet even beyond this existence of countless planets exist more worlds—entirely different dimensions of reality known as the planes of existence. Except for rare linking points that allow travel between them, each plane is effectively its own universe with its own natural laws.

Demiplanes: This catchall category covers all extradimensional spaces that function like planes but have measurable size and limited access. Other kinds of planes are theoretically infinite in size, but a demiplane might be only a few hundred feet across. There are countless demiplanes adrift in reality, and while most are connected to the Astral Plane and Ethereal Plane, some are cut off entirely from the transitive planes and can only be accessed by well-hidden portals or obscure magic spells.

A number of spells and magic items utilize extradimensional spaces, such as rope trick, a bag of holding, a handy haversack, and a portable hole. These spells and magic items create a tiny pocket space that does not exist in any dimension. Such items do not function, however, inside another extradimensional space.

Since the dimensional space created by create pit does not exist in any dimension, it seems like it has no connection to the astral plane. Thus you can't use teleport spells to travel through the astral plane in a pit.
