PCs nearly nonmythic - Foes still mythic? Can it work ?

Wrath of the Righteous

Hey guys,

i am running Wotr for nearly a year an we are in the middle of book 3.

We started the campaign non-mythic with a 25 point buy and i added self-designed legendary-powers for every single character. (pretty cool stuff , its no nearly as powerful as the normal mythic tiers, but add some unusual possibilities to the gameplay) For each Tier they reach, they get one of these powers, no hp, np attributes, nothing else.

At this point, they all have reached tier 3 and the self-designed powers add nearly nothing to their combatpower and still they manage to kill nearly everything without big problems. (except Soltengrebbe , i used scorpions statblocks and Soltengrebbe killed one pc)

Group consists of the following chars :

Marek - 1/8 Monk/Pistolero - highly optimized, a brutal damagedealer , "oneshots" even bigger threads in one round

Thermen - Cleric of Sarenrae , 9 Merciful Healer - nearly no damage but heals like hell

Zaigan - 9 Paladin of Torag - Lots and lots of armor and hp , smiting foes really fast

Dajin - 1/8 Rogue/Wizard FLexible Caster with a lot of useful spells. Mostly not a big thread in fights

Argon - 9 Sorceror - Blaster with some disable spells , shines when the battlefield is packed with minions

After a lot o text now finally the question :

Do you think i can keep the mythical foes , using mythic stuff against my group or will the pc do not stand any chance in higher levels?

Thanks for your advises.

Ben

I think you're going to get a lot of varying answers, and I think it depends on the group.

I've got a mythic party, 15-point buy, 5 PCs and they're struggling to get through book 3 with me running things as presented. Just in book 3 we've already had 1 death and are only 3 sessions in. There have also been an additional 2 almost deaths (still just in book 3), one the players voted to undo, and the other was a goof on the rules. If I were to drop Mythic I don't see how they'd last.

Either way you probably know best, but you're in a good spot considering. If things start to get difficult you can always ramp up their legendary-powers.

Hmmm , thanks for ur opinion.
I had 2 deaths in the whole campaign so far...a ranger got himself torn apart by soltengrebbe - he refused to retreat with low life and died through a full attack , the other on was a bit unlucky : The paladin jumped down from their rope trick into 3 shades , got hit 3 times and i rolled 2 6 and 1 5 ...17 str-dmg was too much.

But aside from this they do pretty well. The Pistolero annoys me so much with his touch-attack-shoots.

I guess i will stick with the legendary foes as long as they can handle it and then downgrade them-

But i still want to hear some opinions/advices ! <3

You will have issues later in the campaign without the buffs provided by mythic abilities. You may want to look towards templates or other ways to up the beef of the PC's capabilities, especially once you begin Midnight Isles.

Also, I'm reading the setup for the final book, and they really seem to be writing it with the assumption that a TPK will not end the campaign, since the PC's will have the Immortality power.

I ran my players through a good portion of book 4.

They tore it apart. The PCs were not mythic. Only when I buffed and altered encounters did they become challenging.

Encounters in Wrath are low CR for the amount of power you're expected to have if you're mythic. With the exception of three specific encounters in book 6 (Korramzadeh, Areelu, and Deskari), I doubt you'll have much trouble at all getting through the campaign.

If your players are good at optimizing, which they seem to be, they might even find those three encounters mentioned to be a fun challenge.

Read all six books before you implement this so you know what you're getting into.

Immortality doesn't save you from death by a mythic foe, espcially not the end-game boss. It is quite possible to lose it all.

You can always give them regenerating Hero Points.

It's sort of a Mythic Lite.

Okay, thanks for all the input , guys.
I will continue my way and will have a close look on every greater fight.
I hope it will work :)
