David M Mallon wrote:Squier acoustics are absolute garbage (their electric guitars and basses are pretty decent, though). Cort guitars are a little bit higher quality, especially older models. I'd say go with the Cort, but that might just be because I'm a sucker for Asian-made guitars. I'm not really a "gear nerd."I'd watch two whales humping before I got a squier acoustic... well, maybe not that, but yes they're s!+!.
I'd get the Cort, if only because acoustic instruments sound better as they age. :-)
If you can play it before buying that'd be ideal, but I'm old school like that.
But I'm also not a gear nerd. :-)
Thanks for the advice, both of you. That was my gut feel - the Squier looked like something grandma would buy for Junior for Christmas, kinda "My First Guitar!" - but the opinion on the forums I visited was split about 50-50 love/hate. Some people seem to be in love with the Fender name, even when it gets mutated into Squier.
I am glad you both said that, because I really like the looks of the Cort. It looks old and used and loved and drenched in music.
Not that I actually know how to play, but if my hand starts working, I want something that will sound good enough that I continue the work.
By the way, guitars and strings are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than flutes, which are about the cheapest of orchestral instruments.

I am slowly eating healthier too. Slowly. While mark can certainly note that I have had some fried foods on a special occasion, I have been using my BRAND SPANKING NEW RICE COOKER more, and today was fish and corn for lunch with cheerios and banana for breakfast(yesterday was much the same, but cheerios and two types of fruit for breakfast, fruit for lunch, and rice and vegetarian curry for dinner).I'm not skinny yet, but I'm trying. I'm also going to the gym with mom more and have toned my weakness treats down to fit newtons (easiest diuretic you'll ever eat!) and no more than two mexicokes a day. That it. Beyond that it's water, tea, and fruit.
I am working an early shift for the second job today aND so I will be trying to make it to m2m to get some more curry for my rice cooker...
Wait, what? You have poutine where you live?
I didn't think there was anywhere in the states where you could get it. It probably doesn't help that I live in one of the most backward states in the country.
You need to come to New York. Freehold and I will take you to Pomme Frites.

I don't know if I've ever had actual red pepper flakes, hmm...
You can usually get a few packets of red pepper flakes free when you order takeout/delivery pizza.

Yep. Although, I suspect the most expensive flute are a fortune more than cheap violins. Especially since so many flutes use gold and silver for a warmer sound.
I have a goal to acquire a baby grand piano in the next five years. Now THERE'S an expensive instrument. It'll probably be like a car payment, but worth it.

Treppa |

Baby grands are pricey, but there are some nice looking ones here on Craigslist. I saw a little spinet that a lady would pay $35 for you to come take away. If only I had a truck! And a helper.
Somebody else suggested piano for finger therapy, but both flute and piano don't force the finger bend like guitar does. And also, I hate the springy key feel of keyboards. I'd want a real piano, and they take up a lot of room that just ain't available.

I thought I had seen them before, alas, that was from my childhood when I was very paranoid and picky eater.
Now I'm just picky AFTER I've tried something.

The classier pizza joints will have a shaker of them next to the Parmesan cheese shaker. They add a nice kick to cheese pizza without overpowering it.

yesterday we made a trip I got for my birthday from a groupof friends:
we had a guided tour through a reconstructed imperial roman military fort (a castrum) here in hessia.
It is called the Saalburg and was rebuild around 1900 on the old foundations by German Emporer Wilhelm II.
The castrum was part of the Limes border system between the Imperium Romanum and the wild Germanicum.
After the tour we where taught to shoot with a roman composite bow and to throw a javlin (at an imagined wild boar)
afterwards we ate in the Taberna food made after original roman recepies
it was great fun

Cool! I did something similar in Nova Scotia in the historical site of Louisbourg. It's a 18th Century living museum, and we ate period cuisine at their 'tavern'
It was interesting since my ancestors fought the French there. In fact my biological family got their original land grant for participating in its capture.

Just make sure you get an extra two or three sets of strings, they will break, and it sucks not having an extra set around when it does.
I was looking at flat-wrapped strings because my poor fingertip is still really tender where they pulled the pin out. They get pricey, though. Maybe one set of flat-wrap to start with a normal round wrap spare pack.
The guy with the Cort didn't leave contact info and hasn't responded to the little button that says "Notify Craigslist". I hope it's still there.
