Sohei, Master of Weapons

I was considering some of the new material from the weapon master's handbook and how it might complement a sohei monk build, and I eventually decided to give it a try.

Has anyone attempted something similar?

If you take armor expert, it is possible to grab a mithral breastplate without any penalties. Since it counts as light armor, it can be used with your flurry.

Note that taking this depends on how far you plan to take the campaign. The thing is that, with access to monk scaling AC bonus, as well as the opportunity to get two different stats (which are enhanced by different items) to AC, even a monk with a low starting wis will eventually get more AC if they go unarmored.

Given your stats though, and the need for both a belt of dex and headband of wis, along with the need to actually switch over to bracers of armor (which might mean a financial loss to get the same amount of AC enhancement depending on your item market)..this is a high level thing I would imagine. Possible past level 14, if I was ballparking it. Since many games don't go that far... it is all up to you.

And it isn't like having medium armor is necessarily 'bad' AC (not great, but not bad). It is probably the better approach through mid levels.

Sovereign Court

AC 21 at level 8? You're going to be hit a lot.

Take one of these bad boys and you can one-round a large portion of common enemies.

Good point about the AC, that's one of the things I was most worried about.

An earlier version of the build had a mithral breastplate, but I gave it up for the fortuitous enchantment. Looking back, definitely not worth it. Dropping the enchantment lets the monk have a +2 mithral breastplate, raising his AC to 24. Any good ways to make it higher?

The gloves of dueling take up a lot of the wealth, but they provide an excellent combat benefit. Is it worth giving them up for better defenses?

My intent was for this character to rely somewhat on non-AC forms of defense. A reach weapon and Difficult Swings can make it extremely difficult for enemies to get adjacent, and Cut from the Air can protect against most ranged attacks.

Eoxyn, I'm really not seeing the benefits of the rod of nettles. It would consume more than half of this characters wealth, its DC 14 fortitude save is alarmingly low for this level, and this character is incompetent at fighting with light maces.
