Can a hunter select a plant animal companion, like a crawling vine?

As written I don't see how. But in a home game I would discuss writing up an archetype for it with your gm, looking at verminous hunter and tree singer druid it should be easy to do and make it balanced.

As the game stands currently, no. Hunter uses the druid animal companion rules, and you need an archetype for a plant companion. You could easily create an archetype for hunter that does so though.
