Ring of Continuation - Any uses?

Advice

So stumbling across the Ring of Continuation, it seemed pretty cool! However I am completely stumped as to what spells can be used with its limit of personal spells that are 10 minutes per level or greater.

How many personal spells actually apply to this ring?

The ring used to be fantastic before they errata'ed it to have the 10min/lvl requirement on the personal spells. Now you're better off saving 15k and getting a ring of FoM in that slot instead.

It's going to be a better buff to have always up than anything else I can think of the RoC could help you with.

I know! It's a little sad. I feel more inclined to buy an Extend Metamagic Rod instead, since it works with any spell regardless of it's duration. Also I could hand it off for an ally to use, and it's not as "selfish" regarding personal spells.

Yeah, the Rod seems like the better investment unless you really comb through the spell lists.

I actually can't find a single spell that fits the description in the Ring, except ones that last all day already. Such as Longstrider, Mage Armor, and the like.

Ring of Continuation is what high-level Wizards use to steal the Druid capstone class feature. Shapechange is the best thing you can stuff into the ring since it was eratta'ed to not allow continuous Time Stop or short-duration uberbuffs.

There's a few others. Contingent Scroll is the best use IMO because you're not going to recast it unless you have a stack of scrolls to burn.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The ring is even worse than you think. Casting a new spell with a range of personal ends the continuation spell, whether or not the new spell is eligible for continuation.

Some exactly 10 min/lvl personal spells (not exhaustive, see also example of AMF below that is for all intents and purposes personal but not technically listed as such)

* Absorb Toxicity
* Adjustable disguise
* Amplify Stench
* Ancestral Gift
* Antimagic Field (just one example of not listed as "personal" but really is...)
* Anchored Step
* Aura of Doom
* Beastspeak
* Blend
* Bullet Ward
* Cloud Shape
* Commune with Birds
* Comprehend Languages
* Cultural Adaptation
* Disguise Self
* Echolocation
* Find the Path
* Follow Aura
* Foresight
* Freedom of Movement
* Ghostly Disguise
* Glibness
* Heightned Awareness
* Holy Shield
* Honeyed Tongue
* Investigative Mind
* Meld into Stone
* Read Magic
* See Invisibility
* Shapechange
* Spell Turning
* Starsight
* Whispering Lore

Not a particularly inspiring list.

There are also some pretty obscure things like polypurpose panacea, where there is a FLAT 1 hour duration to some things, thus casting normally at CL 15 would give you only 1 hour, but if you cast it at (intentionally lowered) CL 1, that effect now lasts 24 hours.

Shield would be an option. Probably still not worth the money.

This is a decent limiting factor if the 10 minute/level rule was omitted. The only spell I could see getting out of hand would be something like Caustic Blood

So, instead of being broken with Timestop, it is now essentially broken in its basic functionality?

Great.

Why not fix the Timestop brokenness with "Doesnt work with Timestop.", instead of trashing the whole item?

This heavy-handed stuff is why people badmouth balancing nerfs in general.

Agreed. Things would be ok if the ring involved 1-minute/level or 1-round/level personal spells. I mean, yeah you could walk around with Divine Power on a Cleric/Oracle all day, but you couldn't use other spells like Righteous Might/Divine Favor in conjunction. Not too terribly powerful.

I feel that spells that have a 10-minute/level duration already last long enough without the ring. Especially by the time you can afford 56,000gp.

The limit of 10 min is not in my book thus not in my games.

Other 10 minute/level personal spells:

aram zey's trap ward, chameleon scales, enshroud thoughts, eyes of the void, firebelly, focused scrutiny, heightened awareness, inner focus, jungle mind, perceive cues, phantom blood, resinous skin, seducer's eyes, veil of heaven, veil of positive energy

Yikes. Hardly any of those justify the cost and slot of the ring.

Yeah. I'd only consider using it at very high levels, and only with a few of the best spells available. Shapechange if I can cast it, echolocation if not, and maybe glibness on a bard just for the fun of it.
