SLA and Swift Action spells

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Reading though the message-boards it seems apparent that is you try to use a SLA of a spell that has a casting time longer than a standard action, you use the spells casting time, Summon Monster as an example.

is the converse true, if you have a spell with a swift action ( or immediate action) casting time, would the SLA have that swift or immediate action activation time .

Feather fall for example. (or one of the newer clerical / Paladin spells like Grace.

Is there a FAQ on the subject? I have not seen one in my search.
If yes, reference link please.

Thanks!

It says unless otherwise noted in the spell description. Doesn't that mean all spell like abilities have the casting time of the spell they mimic, unless the ability description differs?

Seems a bit confusing as what I quoted is an exception to the operates as the spell normally does clause. FAQed

Not all spell-like abilities are based on spells, therefore there needs to be a default for when there's no spell description to refer to. That's why the cited rule exists.

Sounds good to me. So a spell like ability always operates as the spell its mimicing unless text in the creature indicate otherwise, or it's not based on a normal spell in which case it's simply a standard action.

Pretty much.

Most rules specific to SLAs exist almost entirely for the sake of the bajillion domain/bloodline powers that let you shoot a 30ft lazerbeam for 1d6+(half level) a few times per day. Outside of stuff like that, it's basically "it's the spell except as otherwise noted".
