The Legendary Planet Adventure Path - starting with "To Worlds Unknown" and the "Legendary Planet Player's Guide", available now right here on Paizo.com - is starting to get into gear. Given the, uh, uniqueness of many of the races and creatures encountered in this series, it would be very nice if we could get forum avatars made from the art as the volumes continue to come out.
Is there a realistic chance of this happening when the web team has a bit of time?

Another option would just be to use a different forum. Custom avatars is a common feature of modern internet forums, and while you can't use copyrighted images, you can you fan-made images inspired by Legendary's images. Other websites also tend to have other features that would be helpful to pbps (such as unlimted nesting of spoilers for secret information, different colored text for different characters, images embedded in posts, indicators of when or whether a post has been edited, etc).
On the other hand, you are on this website. Given how far behind Paizo is in a huge range of features that are near-universal on other 21st century internet forums, it's fairly safe to assume that anyone on this website doesn't care much about the forum's software features, and we're all just here for the people:)
Which, in turn, lowers the incentive for Paizo to improve it.
Also, keep in mind that Paizo uses their own homebrew forum software, whereas most forums nowadays are run via third-party software developers with an interest in keeping their forum features better than competitors. Hence, it is probably a bigger investment of resources for Paizo to add new features than it is for most other forums.

Is Paizo far behind on forum features, or have they made a conscious decision not include features that theyve deemed unnecessary, annoying, and/or potentially problematic? ;)

Many of these criticisms really should go in a different thread and are unrelated to this person's request (as the answer isn't a technical limitation, but instead a decision that Paizo staff has made). We intentionally have customized forum software to accommodate our status as an online retailer and various other business related tasks, and have quite a list of features we hope will make it up the chain of the tech team's to-do list as higher priority projects get completed (particularly geared towards to play-by-post features and improving social interactions between our community members). I've also done a fair bit of research while documenting and revising those feature sets, and no third-party option satisfies the requirements that Paizo needs to have met.
I have a related question for you Chris. Have you guys ever discussed the option to allow board users to create custom avatars? I know personally I would love a pleroma avatar as it's my favorite outsider.
Nope, we have no plans for custom avatars/ability for folks to upload images (in part due to copyright concerns/appropriateness in terms of our Community Guidelines [I don't want my team trawling through user submitted images for those that break those, to be honest]; our existing pool of non-Paizo avatars is partially inherited by decisions made by Paizo staff some years ago). However, we have one contest where the winner has received a custom avatar, so further opportunities aren't out of the question.

A little from Column A, a little from Column B!

Thanks for the interest in a separate forum and/or avatars, folks. It sounds like Chris has pretty conclusively answered the avatars question.
One thing that might be possible is to see if we could get a new subsection created in the "Third-Party Pathfinder RPG Products" group for 3PP Adventure Paths. Obviously ours is just beginning, but having a home for posts on other 3PP APs like Way of the Wicked, Throne of Night, Zeitgeist, etc. might be helpful as well, as an analogue to the Pathfinder AP section. For players, GMs, PBPers, and more, that might be a helpful way to set that aside from the general churn of the catch-all "Product Discussion" section.
I have no idea of the technical requirements involved and whether that would be a small or large request, but we have sections now for:
Product Discussion
Advice and Rules Questions
Conversions
Suggestions/House Rules/Homebrew
If that's something you'd like to see, let Chris, Vic, etc. know and maybe it can happen.

I have mixed feelings about this idea.
On the one hand, I think it's great to have more refined sorting of topics. On the other hand, if this idea had been implemented earlier, I may have missed some products that ended up interesting me, including Legendary Planet itself. I don't particularly care for the adventure path format, so I ignore Paizo's ads about their APs and keep the Paizo AP subforum hidden. I bought into Legendary Planet for the setting, without much intention of running it as an adventure.
If you had only posted about Legendary Planet in a separate AP-specific subforum, I might not have seen it while the kickstarter was running, and that would have been unfortunate because I'm really enjoying it so far.
