I'm in the mood for some piracy. What about you?
For years, I've wanted to run a sandbox pirate game. Now that my plate is (mostly) clear, it feels like this is something I can commit to.
Character Creation Rules
Starting Level: 5th Gestalt
Races: Most Paizo races are allowed. Stay away from the harder sci-fi stuff, like aliens and androids though. 3PP stuff will be accepted on a case by case basis, ie. you make it, and I'll make a decision.
Classes: All Paizo is allowed. 3PP stuff will again be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
Ability Scores: Focus and Foible, setting a score to 18 and another to 08 before modifiers. Then, after that, distribute 16 points on a one-for-one basis among the other scores as you wish, which are by default set to 10, before modifiers.
HP: Max HP per level.
Skills: Normal skills + 2 background ranks per level.
Feats: Bonus feat at 1st and 4th level, and every four levels after that.
Traits: 1 Trait + 1 Campaign trait from Razor Coast, Freeport, or Skull & Shackles. You may take a drawback for an additional trait.
Alignment: No NE or CE.
Fluff: Please include a background for your submission, including a description of appearance and personality. I'm looking for characters that seem particularly appropriate for the setting.
Final Notes: This campaign has its fair share of mature content. If that isn't your thing, this might not be the game for you.
I'm planning on integrating Freeport into this setting, but I don't have the books yet. I'll write up a post on eagle's eye view of the setting later.

Honor and Reason
the tale of Garidan Lafayette
Growing up in Arcadia, as an orphan. I was taken in by the military, specifically I was sent to the knights academy; the vanguard of my village. Normally we scout out and clear the trading routes to the other villages on the other end of the continent, the only other known settlements...
It was soon after joining the academy that I met Kiera, the elven woman who would become my best friend and mentor. Strong and fast, Smart and beautiful.
Recording her “Statistics” was something I had avoided doing for years. After all she was my friend, why would I ever need to know her weaknesses. My guess was some part of me knew I could never give her a biased recording, to much emotion getting in the way. As I put my pen to paper, the door swung open.
“Garidan what are you doing? We have a mission”called familiar silvery voice of Kiera, she was the only person in the village I could stand. She was beautiful, but I never told her: hair and eyes the color of ice, and a honest heart unlike my own. She held the same passiveness I learned to love over the years.
“Just recording a few things, knowledge is power after all.” I shut my book, put on my my red and gold robes, bracers and gloves. I grabbed my traveling gear, I turned expecting to see Kiera waiting, only to see her reading my book.
“Your finally getting to recording me I see.” she smiled, I blushed snatching the book from her. She always loved teasing me, I guess that's why I never told her... she already new.
“Let's go” She lead me out of my room and down the hall of the academies living quarters, we passed Arkus and his band of Orcs . They were part of the academy as well, however they were knights. The academy was separated into different organizations, Kiera and I were part of the Paladin sect which operated as the vanguard of the village. Arkus and his band part of the knights, the main force of the military. The two sects never got along, both vied for praise among the villagers.
“Hey look fellas, it's the shining knight and her honor-less mutt” Arkus snarled, the others laughed. Kiera gripped my hand tightly and shook her head.
“Ignore them” she whispered pulling me forward. I slipped out of her grip, walking over to the band.
“You know Arkus, your right I am honor-less” I pretended to accidentally drop a vial in between them, “You wanna hand that to me Arkus” He grabbed the vial, crushing it in his hand, “Oh well” I smiled turning around to rejoin Kiera.
As we continued down the hall, “What was in that vial” Her voice took a harsher tone.
“Nothing you should worry about”, I vial containing an Aersolized poison, enough to get them sick and hurting but not enough to kill. I smirked, I could hear coughing from them already.
“you can't be doing that, you will end up hurting someone” She shook her head in disappointment, nothing I hadn't gotten used to. Arkus and his group deserved what i gave them, bullies the lot of them, they think they can just pick on people all I do is give them a taste of their own medicine.
We reached the general's office, I waited in the hall as Kiera retrieved the papers for our assignment. We were to secure one of the trade roads, there were reports of attacks on them. We reached the area by nightfall, there was a clearing signs of attacks, ransacked carts nothing I hadn't expected. The area suddenly was lit aflame, I couldn't past the fire and shadows, javelins flew out of the darkness.
“Run Garidan! Now” She was serious, She drew her shield and longsword. I listened... I turned tail and ran through the forest leaving her behind like a coward...one of the few times I chose to listen. I ran back to the village, found it on fire to. Kiera was one of the best fighters in the village, I one of the weakest.
I didn't help anyone, I quit being a paladin, I wasn't worthy. Kiera had died that day, so did everyone else except me...I ran. Left for one of the nearby villages, and caught a boat who knows where I just hoped it was far away.
Garidan wears a chain-mail shirt underneath his clothing, a red shirt and a red and gold scarf. He keeps a small locket with the picture of a woman on his person. Blond hair and grey eyes, he keeps his hair tied back.
Garidan personality wise is kind of a smart ass. He is used to being alone and has little experience making friends as most people dislike him are put off by his rather blunt attitude. He's honest to a fault, he doesn't lie to make people feel better, he tells them things they may not want to hear. He keeps many journals on himself for the purpose of recording data, he can be kind of obsessed when it comes to recording these statistics. He does so as it helps him gauge difficulty and find weaknesses in friend or foe.
Random Garidan quotes
Everyone loves a hero. They cheer for them, scream their names, and years later they'll tell how they stood for hours in the rain just to get a glimpse of the one who told them to hold on a second longer. I believe there's a hero in all of us, that's why people need to learn to rise to the occasion and fight for themselves become their own heroes. I won't fight their battles for them, i'll help if their's something in it for me but saving individuals isn't my priority destroying the greater evil is.
As said here is the backstory and such, the mechanics will be in this alias. Will be adjusting for the official build rules. I should also add in particular that Garidan is here to study ancient ruins and legends.
He may not be a mage but he is smart, incredibly so. used lore warden Fighter and Mindchemist ALchemist. Melee combat, debuffing, and skills requiring intelligence are all under his belt.

Here is Roycilo's submission. Decided to build to suit the game. Working on backstory now. He's an Undine Adept Druid, and Cleric of Gozreh. Lots and lots of utility, buffs, healing, and an overall water theme. Basically he's the water witch the pirates keep on board to keep things running smoothly. His job is to make everyone better at what they do. I will likely play healer and utility caster in combat. I'll be working on him off and on.

Green Smashomancer |

I'm interested. I actually have a pirate character set up for hime games I can convert. She'd be an LE Gunslinger/Inquisitor in Gestalt rules I think. Probably gonna use a different class than gunslinger starting next level though. I'll start writing now.
she's also going to have ranks in Profession sailor because that will finally be useful.

Albert the Fat |

Albert the Fat is a longtime sea traveler believed to be once a slave who earned his freedom and keen on maritime laws. He's a bit senile and sometimes uses contrived high-minded words to persuade those who'll lend him an ear. He spends his time drinking his unique spirited concoctions and recanting old sea stories. There are moments that he asks individuals to agree to contracts, sometimes made in the shadows and secrecy. Another oddity about Albert the Fat is that he doesn't have a single enemy nor any person who harbors a sentiment of hatred towards him.

GM Old Salt |

Any chance of getting two favored class benefits each level?
Just one.
Question - If anything, what is allowed in terms of multiclassing? Only one side of Gestalt can multiclass per level? At all? No multiclassing?
If not at all, probably an Inquisitor//Barbarian.
Both sides can multiclass, although it seems like a lot of paperwork. :)
Religions/deities out of the Razor Coast guide?
Aye.

There's a Mike Tyson Icon?
Also, are you (the GM) allowing the Summoner? Specifically the Synthesist archetype? Might make that one half of my submission for flight purposes.

Ya know i looked at it and didn't see mike tyson until it was brought up, now i can't stop thinking it

Gobo Horde |

Well I have 2 ideas that I want to ask you about :)
First one uses a 3pp class so I need to ask you about that.
I want to create a Human Psion (Nomad) and gestalt it with a bard (Sea Singer).
His focus will be in Charisma (not Int) and he will be more largely focused on buffing people and moving wherever he wants to go.
Think of Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, both in how he refers to himself as "Captian" even when he is not, his ability to get places to the utter bewilderment of others and his uncanny luck of always being somewhere unexpected :)
Some of the reasons I really like this guy and would love to play him;
1: He can teleport everywhere (and this is the main reason to be a psion), move about quite quickly and generally get into unexpected places. He can also do his sea singing in the air XD
2: He has a neat Captain Jack feel with his desire to be captain, his swagger and charisma, and his unexpectedness (or at least Ill try! Note, he is based a bit off of Jack but he will by no means be a clone)
3: He gets a familiar, a parrot and I think it could be quite funny how the parrot is sitting on his perch and it unexpectedly teleports out from underneath him XD
So, would you allow me to play a psion? Do you like the idea?
My second idea is more of a fish out of water type, or rather a stone out of water!
He would be a dwarf alchemist (maybe internal alchemist, or Chirurgeon and become the ship doctor as well) gestalted with a melee class who wears heavy armor (not a barbarian, dont want rage and mutagen :/).
2 main aspects of him would be his armor and alchemy.
This dwarf would be the ships brewery, making sure the crew is fully addled with grog and the occasional "extra potent brew." he would be making his potions and drinks in his spare time :)
the other aspect is being a dwarf that wears a half ton of armor on a ship, something that you would normally never see! He would have a couple of abilities and feats that would make him very resistant to being moved, and he would have a very strong fear of going overboard, because he would then sink like a stone, so he takes extra precautions to make sure that doesnt happen (and if it does, he would have Touch of the Sea as an extract to give him a chance!)
I think it would be quite neat to play less mobile character who is very hard to move and put him on a ship :)
Well, what do you think of my 2 ideas?

GM Old Salt |

Also, are you (the GM) allowing the Summoner? Specifically the Synthesist archetype? Might make that one half of my submission for flight purposes.
Synthesist summoners are allowed.
I have a fondness in my heart for the old Pirates of Dark Water cartoon.
GM, would you allow a Stryx character modeled loosely after Niddler the Monkey Bird?
I love Pirates of Dark Water! Show me what you've got!
Like I asked in the previous thread, is the 3PP Armor Bonded PrC allowed?
It looks fine to me, although it seems like a risky choice when you figure to be on a ship for a fair amount of time.
Well I have 2 ideas that I want to ask you about :)
I actually don't like the idea of psionics in this setting, so unfortunately, I'll nix the first idea. I like the concept of a swaggering pirate though.
The second idea seems fine, although risky in the setting.

Gremory Ainsworth |

This is the Alias I was referring to. Synthesist ended up being less friendly to ranged combat than I expected, so I'm sticking to Inquisitor for the second half for now. Would the Trench Fighter archetype be allowed?
I only ask because it seems to imply it's meant for a more modern setting, though it doesn't really have any abilities that would look out of place, save for the name.
Either way, I'll be finished with her mechanics and backstory tonight.

GM Runescarred Dragon |

Okay - I have two concepts I'm working from.
One is a witch. These three pictures give an idea, but basically Witch//Storm Druid, focused on witchy stuff (curses, CC, status conditions, all that good stuff) plus weather related abilities.
The other is based on this guy.
Probably a magus//something with full base. Or maybe Myrmidarch Magus//Spellslinger Wizard, or something.

Yeah, the question about firearm availability wasn't answered.
I think that question might have been edited in, because when I went through the list of questions to answer, I didn't see it.
Firearms are 'commonplace,' so they count as martial weapons. Early firearms and ammo are 25% reduced in price. In addition to this, there are some extra guns provided with the Razor Coast rules setting. I'll be posting them later tonight.

Well it looks like I wasn't the only person considering a gunslinging pirate I guess...
I'm mostly looking at a Spellslinger Wizard // Trench Gunner Fighter, but it looks like my initial Inquis//Barb might fit better.
I want to be able to bull rush people off a ship deck and then turn into a shark as I dive after them.
That's... the greatest thing I've ever seen.

Hey, who says there should only be one person with a range focus? I say go for your last idea if you prefer it. I'll only really be doing damage, but spell slinger gives area control too.
Now if we need someone scared/lied to/spoken to, I've got it covered.

My submission has a lot of Undine/Hydralic Push Shenanigans as well. If we both get picked, we could have a good little combo between my druid/cleric, and your fighter/druid.

Hmm, full party of 6 Gunslinger//Slayer, we are the Expendables.

Gunslinging pirate seemed to obvious for the setting, that why i avoided it. i new there would be a million submissions with them. of course at the same time my only reason for being here is i was a passenger on a ship, on the way to study ancient lore and old civiliations. so my reasoning is a little weaker.

Fury of the Tempest |

Yeah, I'm not surprised that there is a lot of Gunslinger Pirates. So I'm intending to go something different.
I'm gonna be going for a Half-Orc Archaeologist Bard/Empiricist Investigator. Play as a leader-type more than a straight out Gunslinger. Admittedly, that might change depends on what these Razor Coast extra guns are and if they catch my interest... probably gonna keep the Half-Orc Archaeologist Bard either way.

I have the ranks and feats to spare, but unfortunetly alchemists cant take the crafting feats otherwise i would take them as it could help me and others on the team, and makes a bit of sense...Of course i could take master crafts, craft wondrous item and inscribe tattoo's i need to free up two feats but that should be easy...
what do we all think? would it be worth it? it'd be my teamwork contribution...giving you all sweet magic tats
thats one vote for so far

![]() |

as far as magic items go this would be alot cheaper for the group and well i have fighter feats on top of bonus feats give by gm and the human bonus feat. so i have the room to work.
okay so new discovery how many of us new that the alchemist crafting question has been answered?
James Jacobs answered they can take them, sweet. with that answer i probably will be taking them.

Vagabond? |

Posting intrest- Though, a question, though Spheres of Power is not on the SRD, I would love to use it. Is that permited?
Following that up, what about Necromancy? How acceptable would a Necromancer be? My current plan is a Incanter//Cleric (Non-Sphere) focused on creating the undead for her servitude, and sending them out to work the megre jobs in the ship. Alternatively, she'll be a really old, kindly woman who smiles at those she works under, but for the past 40 years has mastered the art of Necromancy, aiming to move forward into battle. She'll be LE, of course (Though her being NE would be personally more freferable, I understand not wanting someone who's out for herself). She'll behave somewhat akin to a shaman, most likely, but I would prefer to not have to follow any faith- Maybe a shaman-like character who seeks to use ancient ways to claim death in her own name.

Might consider being a tiki wielder from the player's guide. It seems like the majority of Necromancers hang out in Carcass, with demons and it's the worst place in all of the razor, slavers don't even like it. But hey, it's your funeral(or not)

Scrabbler |

GM, I've hit a slight snag.
Here's Scrabbler the Monkey Bird, at about 75% complete. His background, personality, and most of the mechanics are done if you'd like to take a look.
The issue is actually with the race. The Strix don't quite fit my vision for the character. I want him to be small sized.
So, here are the thoughts I have regarding how to make that work-
1) Use the standard Strix abilities, but just make him small (according to the race builder, medium and small size are the same point value, so this doesn't change anything in regard to power level)
2) Use the abilities of a Monkey Goblin, and add the Strix alternate racial trait Clipped Wings. Then take the Stretched Wings feat to give him normal flight. (according to the race builder this adds 2 points to the racial point value, making this hybrid race worth 12 points, which is actually less than the strix)
Personally I would prefer the Monkey Goblin version because they have tails, and because there's a couple goblin traits and feats that I'm considering.
What are your thoughts?
