Another silly question,,,,,

I ran my first adventure the other night at our local game shop, had good turn out (6 players), the scenario went very well. But I had a player who was extremely good. He was knowledgeable, fun spirited, helpful to other players in & out of game. He made a good scenario better for all who played. The group completed all objectives and looted all they could, so full reward was handed out.

I guess my question is, is there a way I can reward players for excellent play above what the chronicle sheet covers? I feel that the excellent player should of gotten a little more.... Something for his efforts??

A fun, memorable note from you as the GM scrawled on the Chronicle is always a nice touch.

As a player, I've always felt that the game was its own reward. As a GM, when I've had excellent players, I've then used them to elevate other games. That level of trust from a GM, to rely on them to make a game better, if definitely a reward.

For example, if there's a RP-heavy scenario, invite that player specifically to play, and sit them further down the table from you. The back-and-forth between you, if you're not right next to each other, will draw other players in.

You could also reward the player with information. Fill them in on some of the background of the scenario, if there's any behind the scenes info that wasn't revealed. Let them know if there's a prequel or follow-up scenario, or if there are characters they enjoyed that show up again.

Get some gold stars for the player chronicles :-)

What everyone else has said, additionally especially when I meet non-local players/GMs (at a Con or online) I like to (if possible) also email their closest VO. As venture officers it's nice to get good news to pass on to our lodge or do a bit of bragging, and they may have something nice the can do in turn for the player/GM even something as small as a comment from them saying it's been noted and passed on to them. It can be a very nice touch.

With local players if someone really goes above and beyond sometimes here (note this definitely varies) we sometimes try and hunt down boons (generally by trading our own away) people would really like, give out dice, or formerly on sale splat books/map packs. But again just saying thank you is often more than enough to make someone's day.

This is worth more than it might seem. I try to do this whenever I remember. The first time I saw it was when my brother's chaotic gnome, having found a scroll of lesser planar binding in a scenario with evil outsiders, proceeded to call a hound archon. At the end, the GM wrote like "A hound archon's grudging respect" or something like that on the sheet.

This is awesome and I really need to start reminding myself to do this more often. In my early player/GM days, I was playing at an unexpected game with a great GM and she wrote "Arrgh, Cloudkill" and besides my first mission fail (with the same character as this example) this was one of the most memorable.

This little note can go a long way to making a game more than just a chronicle sheet (remembers to make note of this as additional information for GM 101/201).

A couple of years ago I was trying to encourage spending at a local hobby store that ran games, and started buying $10 gift certificates when I GM'd games. I'd say the boss of the scenario had a special lucky treasure and had folks roll for it, straight 20, no bonuses. The idea was to give the FLGS 10 bucks as well as get people in the habit of buying stuff from the store (the store was not doing all that well).

You could do the same thing, but hand it out as an MVP award. Maybe even have people vote on who the MVP is, so that it's (at least close to) unanimous.

I make a funny drawing of something that happened during the game on the sheet :)

I've given some of my boons, particularly when someone got his third level character killed to protect a newbie (and in doing so encouraged him to come back).

Silver Crusade 4/5

I sometimes wish to reward my PC's with Starbursts for their valiant efforts but I end up eating them before I get there. ):

If someone does something memorable during the game, I add some clever things on the bottom of their chronicle.

During

you have what hold:
We had a party of monks, and we punched our way through the walls zombie style. The DM put on our chronicles "Where you're goign you don't need doors".

I try to emulate that cleverness when I can for my players.

Like they didn't have one before?

(I always advise everyone I give one to to bring another shirt in case the judge objects to having the shirt at their table.)

A DM demanding a wardrobe change because of a shirt with a rule on it from the game you are playing is so wrong i can not find polite words to express it.

less of a wardrobe change and more subject to the whim of the DMs pacing and sense of drama.

T-shirts restrict the pacing, and the sense of drama.

Go topless.

Topless would make me lose my lunch/dinner/whatnot. That'd really restrict the pacing/drama/play.

That all being said, I had my GM give me a special mention for a character in 'From Under Ice'...

Spoiler:
"Icebreaker of the Jadwiga", after the character was flung through a partially melted icewall by a particular NPC.

The exposed upper torso of the human body nauseates you?

What if the unexposed upper torso of the human body nauseated you?

What if it varied from player to player?

Is it only the DM to decides who goes shirts, and who goes skins?

I'd feel like a total jerk not having a shirt, which would then go into the 'Don't Be A Jerk' rule.

Grand Lodge

If it was a hot room, with no air conditioning, it might be a jerk move to insist upon shirts.

If nosig gets his take 10 t shirt I'm wearing my "not an faq on take 10" pants. And i dare you to tell me to take THOSE off.

Why would I do that? As the judge I am not offended by those, it just means I can have the players Take 10 when I need them to - with out bothering to ask the players what they want to do. Remove the unnecessary die rolls...

I think BNW was referencing this Take-10-NonFAQ thread..

(edit: and in reflection, we should have just taken the entire exchange about T-10 over there to that thread and not derailed this one.

I think I should apologize to the OP for my part of derailing his thread very fine. Sorry!)

Do you give those away? (new ones, not the ones you have worn. giving away used pants would be another thing that makes you say "Eeewww!")
