Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find an answer.

Does the Expanded Defense wild talent allow both known defenses to be used simultaneously, or must you choose one or the other to be active at once?

If both are active together does taking burn allow both defenses to improve for the day? Does taking any burn activate both short term benefits?

You gain both defenses being active at the same time, but you have to spend Burn to improve each separately. Taking burn triggers the additional effects for the defense of the same element. If you take burn for a composite blast you would trigger both, but not when you do a normal blast that only uses one element.

If you read the defense talents, they call out "of you take burn for using an (element) wild talent, your defense instead does this".

I am not looking at the book right now but thought the short term bonuses only activated if you used a wild talent associated with that element? So you would need to use a composite blast to get both. Otherwise they are powered by having burn so I believe both activate and scale using a shared burn pool. This might be why you need to spend a talent to get your expanded element's defense.
