Can an Evangelist choose a prestige class as an Aligned Class?

The Exchange

I am specifically thinking of making a Mystic Theurge / Evangelist.

So your Mystic Theurge levels would increase with Evangelist levels?

As written, yes that can work. But many people don't accept that the subset of classes called prestige classes is included within the word 'class' and think it should have been called out in the Evangelist description. Therefore they think it should not work.

See several threads discussing this, and then check with your GM to get the correct answer for your game.

PS it's a terrible idea for a Mystic Theurge, since you lose yet another level of spellcasting. For a high level NPC, which you want to be very capable but not too powerful, it's fine. For a PC any Mystic Theurge is extremely weak.

I know that MT is weak. I'm fine with being weak. What's important to me is using a fun-to-play combat style.

Are there any keywords I should search for to get these threads?

Secondary question:
Can you use prestige classes that say "Spells per day: +1 level of existing class" to increase the effective level of the Mystic Theurge prestige class?

No.

Mystic Theurge doesnt have a class spell list. It simply advances other classe's spell lists.

Why is that relevant? The "Aligned Class" feature of the Evangelist says that the PC gets all class features for the class. For the Mystic Theurge, that would be the advancing of the other classes' spell lists.

Evangelist is the exception, not the rule.

The root of the question is:

Is "Mystic Theurge prestige class" considered a "spellcasting class?"

Guru is correct: a prestige class that advances another class's spellcasting will not advance Mystic Theurge.

Evangelist (and the other one with similar text whose name I've temporarily forgotten) do advance it.

There is a Paizo prestige class besides Evangelist that generically advances class features? I would love to know what it is.

I was thinking of the Exalted, but for the wrong reasons. It doesn't advance an aligned class like Evangelist does. (It uses deific obedience and could be stacked using Evangelist - take levels in cleric, then a level of Exalted, then use Evangelist to advance the Exalted class. Rather cheesy.)

You could advance Mystic Theurge, but the MT text and table end at 10 levels of MT, so you cannot progress to MT 11+ without houserules.

Until it gets an errata, that is. Then who knows what.
