Death of the Divine

Advice

So I'm writting a Pathfinder story/campaign, and was wondering, is there a cannon way for mortals to kill the gods? I know that there are gods that have died due to lack of followers and other divine beings killing them off, but what about mere mortals? Something like the Raven Queen in 4e who killed off the old god of death and took his spot.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm pretty sure even cannons can't kill gods.

The closest mortals have come to killing gods is Savith beheading the god Ydersius. But she promptly died from poison following the act and Ydersius still grants spells to his clerics, so he's not really "dead".
So no, not really.
It is possible to kill demigods, such as the Whispering Tyrant murdering Arazni, but demigods at least have stat-blocks.

Since Pathfinder deities don’t have stats they cannot really be killed except by plot devices. This was an intentional design of the game. What it really comes down to if you want the players to be able to kill a god they can, if not they cannot. The most common plot device is an artifact level weapon that is capable of killing a deity. Stormbringer is probably the best example of this.

You could also have a specific time where deities can be killed. In the Dresden files major powers can be killed on Halloween. Maybe there is a conjunction that takes place every 1,000 years that allows a deity to be killed.

Killing an avatar of a deity is a completely different story.

Well, looking at Golarion lore all you need to do is cast Meteor and somehow convince the god to jump in front of it. Killed 2 Azlanti gods IIRC.

So... where is that black materia anyway?

Thanks. I figured I was gonna have to create something myself, just wanted to ask in case it had already been done before so I had some idea. Thanks for the help, people!

Paizo generally doesn't stat gods. Their stat blocks would basically boil down to "nope, you lose".

I would just aim for demigods- similar enough flavor, and they can both grant spells and have stat blocks. So go make a monk and punch Cthulu.

On that note, here is the Great Old One subtype. It also basically boils down to 'nope', but mostly in the sense that knock it out for a long enough time span that you will never have to deal with it again.

Also, why not look at the behemoth subtype. Behemoths are creatures that the gods make and send when they are REALLY pissed at you. They are similar to the tarrasque- they have near unbeatable regeneration. Their regeneration can only be stopped via a wish/miracle (which they are specifically weak to)...and that only works for 1d4 rounds. So that might give you an idea of what you are faced against- these are their PETS used when the gods are annoyed. What would an actual god look like?

Well, for the book, the first deaths are going to be the demigods and the like, but the main villain (that I'm still working on) is planning on killing the major gods and stealing their divine essence for himself/herself.
