Question on Mithral Shirt - PFS

Advice

Hi -

Would a character need 9 fame to purchase the Mithral Chain Shirt? http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/magic-armor/specific-magic-armor/mithra l-shirt

It's listed under Magic Items in the PRD, but I know that characters can add Masterwork and Mithral to armor regardless of fame so I wasn't quite sure.

The Mithral Shirt's bonuses are slightly better that just adding Mithral to a Chain Shirt (2.5 lbs lighter is all) so I'm not sure why it's listed as a magic item, but want my 2nd level mobile cleric to purchase it and he's only got 6 fame.

Thanks!

No, they do not have a fame requirement.

It is a non-magical item made of an allowed special material.

There is a slight weight discrepancy between that item and a chain shirt made of Mithral, supposedly the specific item lacks a helm. The price and all other game mechanics are the same.

OK, great! That's what I thought but wasn't sure. Appreciate you confirming.

Another question/clarification. All one has to pay is the add on price for Masterwork, Material, Magic Enhancements...correct?

So if I start out with a Mithral Chain Shirt, I can add Masterwork for 150gp after my first adventure, then a +1 enhancement, then add Mithral. In other words, I don't have to sell current armor for 1/2 price and then buy the armor I want.

If so, how does that work for the Mithral Shirt? I have a character with a Chain Shirt (100) to which I added MW (150) then added a +1 enhancement. Totaling 1250. But if MW is included in price of enchantment, would I only pay 850 to enchant +1? And if I wanted a Mithral Shirt, would it be separate since it's a separate item? Or, if I just added Mithral, would I only pay 850 since MW is included in price of Mithral?

Lots of questions, I know, just trying to determine how the finer points work so I'm doing things correctly.

Thanks!

2 points -

1. Unlike magical enchantments - you can't add masterwork to anything after it's alrady made. You need to buy an entirely new version.

2. For this case it's moot, because any mithril item is inherently masterwork and that's included in the base mithril price.

All things made of Mithral count as masterwork. You can add the +1 Enhancement later.

Masterwork and Mithril need to be added at creation; there's no provision for making an armor mithril spontaneously that I'm aware of (there's a spell to cover Masterwork, which I believe is PFS-legal but I'm not sure).

Mithril includes the cost of masterwork, magic does not-- and an armor has to be masterwork to add an enhancement bonus.

So, you start with a chain shirt (100). You would later have to buy a Mithril Chain Shirt (1100 gp). Said shirt is also Masterwork, which is included in the cost of Mithril.

From there you can add an enhancement bonus, for another 1000 gp.

Liberty's Edge

Mithral Chain Shirts are so common that there is a list price for just them. on page 128 of Ultimate Equipment list the price as 1,100 GP.

Oh, shoot. Screwed that up. So, can enchantments be transferred to new base armors? I wouldn't think so. Meaning if I want this +1 Chain Shirt to be a +1 Mithral Chain Shirt, I'd need to sell what I have and buy a new one, paying for the enchantment again.

Correct?

Thanks for helping me figure out some of this stuff for PFS. Started a few months ago and am having a blast...!

Correct. It's already made of steel - you need an entirely new one if you want a mithril chain shirt.

Of note though - if you haven't actually PLAYED at level 2 yet - I believe that you can sell back the +1 chain shirt at full value. (Acting as if you never bought it.)

Of note though - you would likely be better off saving up for a mithril breastplate (also doesn't need to worry about Fame despite costing 4.2k, or 4.4k if you want to spring for the Agile Mithril Breastplate). It's as extra +2 AC, and only a single point of armor check penalty.

Enchantments can not be transferred.

I assume you have already played this character at level 2.

You can either just keep around an extra set of armor or sell your current +1 Chain Shirt (100gp + 150 MW + 1000 enchant =1150, 50% value selling so 575 gp).

A Mithral Chain Shirt costs 1100 gp. Adding enchantments would have the normal cost.

You are allowed to upgrade enchantments. Taking armor with a +1 enchantment and making it +2 would cost +3000 gp.

And you can still move your full movement rate (barring encumbrance, of course).

Really appreciate everyone's time in answering these questions - makes good sense and clears it up for me.

FYI - Masterwork Transformation is a spell that is usable within PFS. If you cannot cast it yourself you can pay for spellcasting services. This is the thread that you are looking for.
