WotR Kyra Question

On Kyra's second power when it says "When you use the above power or play a blessing that does not have the Corrupted trait on another
character’s (□ or your) check to defeat"

Does this mean any check to defeat or only checks to defeat that could be used in the above power.

I believe it means any check to defeat, but I want to be sure.

I'd take it as two separate triggers for her power. So if she plays a blessing that does not have the Corrupted trait on any check to defeat, unrelated to her first power.

My question is, "check to defeat" what?

Does this mean if she plays a blessing on another (or your) check to defeat something/anything?/a bane?/a boon? it triggers?

Only banes have checks to defeat. If it doesn't specify, I would say it means any bane.

Let's put this into context:

Kyra wrote:

For your check to defeat a bane that has the Demon or Undead trait, you may recharge a spell (□ or blessing) to use your Divine skill + 1d8 and add the Attack, Divine, and Magic traits.

When you use the above power or play a blessing that does not have the Corrupted trait on another character’s (□ or your) check to defeat, a character at your location may shuffle 1 random card from his discard pile into his deck after the check.

I definitely agree with Hawkmoon's interpretation of the separation between the power and the blessing (that does not have the Corrupted trait).

And the check to defeat is anything that has a check to defeat ... meaning any bane.

It just means any "Check to Defeat". So anything for which you're doing a "Check to Defeat" check. This is typically for banes, but also applies to some non-bane cards like ships in S&S. This does not apply to boons as they have a "Check to Acquire".

Also, Logan. I see where you're confused. It might be more clear if you parse the sentence this way:

"When you use the above power
--- or play a blessing that does not have the Corrupted trait on another character’s (□ or your) check to defeat ---
a character at your location may shuffle ..."

Well, if you look at the power (above) then it's easier to separate it from the Corrupted trait portion. It's a context thing. If you only look at that power, then it can be confusing.

I believe it means any check to defeat, but I want to be sure.

You may have three triggers:

-If you use your Nuke Evil (the above) power;
-If you play a non-Corrupted blessing on someone else's check against a bane;
-(Feat) If you play a non-Corrupted blessing on your check against a bane.

Note that if you play a non-Corrupted blessing on your Nuke Evil check, you only trigger this power once.

This may be splitting hairs a bit, but it can be important to remember that all cards with a "check to defeat" are not necessarily banes. As I said above, ships in Skull & Shackles are not banes, but they have checks to defeat, which means WotR Kyra's power can trigger off of playing a blessing against them. There may be similar card types in the future which are also not banes but have checks to defeat.

How come it only triggers once?

You can only use a power once per step.

Ah thank you

Except, if a power is triggered when a thing happens, it can be used every time that thing happens. (For example: Valeros can recharge two weapons used on the same check, instead of discarding them.)

So, why wouldn't the heal power be triggered by using Kyra's spell-like ability, and again for playing a non-corrupted blessing on that check?

The way I'm reading it, it would. The first power is a "For your check to defeat a bane that has the Demon or Undead trait, ..." So the trigger happens once when you use that power to determine the skill you are using. After resolving that trigger, you may then play a blessing on yourself, which could trigger it again (assuming you have that feat checked off).

i'm not quite up on the rules as I'd like to be, so what happens when you have 0 cards in your discard pile and her power triggers. Does the blessing you used get recharged or not? Basically, does the blessing go to the discard immediately? I figured if it had recharge it wouldn't since that is an additional check, but maybe we've been misordering some things.

I'm enjoying her immensely, she's such a selfless character and helping others with blessings definitely feels like that, a complete 180 from Ranzak who I just beat S&S with!

If Kyra triggers her healing power by playing a blessing on a check, and uses her healing power on herself, the blessing she played on the check is a candidate for the card she shuffles into her deck.

This is true because the healing occurs "after the check". The blessing went into the discard pile during the check.
