Swashbuckler Mysterious Avenger

Rules Questions

"At 2nd level, a mysterious avenger gains all of the benefits of the swashbuckler's finesse class feature, and gains the ability to use a whip in place of a light or one-handed piercing melee weapon for all swashbuckler class features and deeds."

Does this mean that a rapier-wielding Mysterious Avenger doesn't get the benefits of the archetype?

Yes. The key wording is "in place of".
Edit:Nevermind, I think I had that wrong. It may be in addition to normal Swashbuckler Finesse.

Actually the last line basically says that whatever benefits a light or one-handed piercing melee weapon would get with Swashbuckler class features now ALSO applies to the whip.

you can still wield a Rapier as usual.

think Zorro and you'll get the idea.

Liberty's Edge

This has put my mysterious avenger (with Whip Mastery and Improved Whip Mastery) in the strange circumstance of attempting to disarm with a whip in melee range, provoking an AOO (due to lack of Improved Disarm), parrying the AOO with his whip, and then disarming with the riposte. We didn't really know what to make of what we all saw happen.

Why wouldn't you just move 5 to 10ft away, and then disarm?

Why wouldn't you just get the free attack with riposte, you've already cancelled the AoO.

Thanks, everyone!
