Okay, so Bloodrager... or just Barbarian?

Advice

I tossed out the Hunter idea I wanted to play, I really liked the idea of Bubbles but then I also didn't know what I would actually DO with the hunter other than have a really neat pet.

I was looking at making an Aasimar bloodrager, since the Angel-blooded Aasimar has bonuses in the two more important stats for them, but after looking at bloodrager bloodlines and abilities I'm wondering if I should really bother and just go straight barbarian instead? I was allowed to take the alternate racial ability for aasimar, which means I could choose the extra +2 strength if I wanted, if that makes a difference in decision making.

If there was a bloodline that would make a bloodrager better than Barbarian for the aasimar, what would it be?

We're going to be doing level 1, with 4D6 drop the lowest stat generation.

I'm open to either idea, really.

Hmmm... it is a tough call. While blood rager has spells, the barbarian gets a ton more rage powers (for cool things like superstition, CaGM, beast totem, and savage dirty trick).

I can't say too much on how valuable most of the bloodlines are (destined caught my attention though due to the luck bonus to saves and AC; throw on beast totem and mithral medium plate, and you are down right tanky)

Just to clarify, for those of us who did not see the hunter thread- when you say Bubbles, do you mean the Power Puff Girl? Or am I just being a dorky 90's kid who goes to that first? If it is that character... I vaguely support bloodrager, if only due to flight options and some blasting spells (for super powers)

Bloodrager with the Primalist archetype. You CAN have your cake and eat it too!

Actually it was Bubbles, the T-Rex, who I was jokingly going to take alongside Buttercup and Blossom as a packmaster hunter. :3 They're the Power-rex Girls.

It was going to make use of the fact that your teamwork feats are shared with your companions, so they'd all have some really great synergy beating the crap out of stuff. But I realized maintaining their HD into the later levels would become troublesome.

The main problem with that though is the limit on rage powers. You can get two for every bloodline power you trade away...and that is it. Primalist was written so that you can't take extra rage power. So a barbarian can get like...19 rage powers, but a blood rager can only get 10, and that is by gutting a part of their class.

Maybe I should start by taking a level or two of Barbarian, then switch to Bloodrager? I can keep the high charisma.

Can I offer a third alternative?

Viking Fighter, for Rage Powers, pick Spirit Totem (and its ilk) and Reckless Abandon/Inspire Ferocity. That way, you can be a Valkyrie!

Third, even fourth and fifth alternatives are welcome suggestions. I'll look at Viking Fighter now. :)

Actually, I don't know how they get rage powers. I'm not seeing them get any on their progression. would I have to take a feat to get them?

Vikings? They get them in place of bonus feats after level 6.

By the way, it is heavily implied that a Viking would get Greater Rage at 14th level, but check with your GM.

It's going to be her first time GM-ing so I could bring it up when we get close to 14 and she has some more experience running. :D

So far I like that Valkyrie idea. I was planning on playing a guy though. Einheriar?

There have been discussions on this before, and the general consensus has been that it boils down purely to personal preference.

The Barbarian and Bloodrager are pretty much perfectly balanced against one another.

Both can be devastating melee OR ranged combatants (an Archer Barbarian is deceptively powerful, though you wouldn't assume so at first glance).

The Bloodrager gets tricks from spells, while the Barbarian gets tricks from Rage Powers (many of which are just about as good as Feats).

The Bloodrager, through spells, may be able to squeak out a bit more damage in total than the Barbarian, but the Barbarian is a lot bulkier due to d12 HD, and DR (especially Invulnerable Rager, which has DR out the ears, along with Energy Resistance).

The major difference comes when you talk about Dragon Disciple. Dragon Disciple requires the Barbarian to take 1 level of Sorcerer (or Bard, or Skald), or if your DM is being liberal with the DD's Bloodline requirement the Eldritch Scion; the Bloodrager, however, IS a Dragon Disciple from level 1, with the added bonus of being a DD for other bloodlines to boot.

The Barbarian to Disciple is still a strong design, but one that sacrifices both rounds of Rage and spellcasting power; however, the trade-off is permanent boosts to stats, slightly stronger abilities in the area of bloondlines, and a more robust body (again, d12 HD).

---

Basically, if you want a Rage-Mage, forego the Dragon Disciple and instead go for Bloodrager.

If you want a damage sponge, go for Barbarian.

If you want magical versatility, go for Bloodrager.

If you want to KILL magic users, go for the Barbarian.

If you want something that will eat opponents by the barnful... go for whatever appeals to you the most fluff-wise.

If going draconic bloodrager, consider taking a bloodline familiar from the familiar folio for the cost of your claws. You could get a mauler compsognathus and have damage boosting/dealing dinosaur sidekick that can occaiosnally fly with you.
