Fighting colossal - Shadow of the colossus style

Advice

Heya,

I have long been wanting to make a fight with something truly huge (actually a lot bigger than huge). Playing on grid however doesn't really support the bigger categories of monsters. I therefore thought of making an event inspired by the game Shadow of the Colossus, though i have actually never played it.

As i understand it, combat basically happens in several stages. You must first climb to the colossus back then onto an arm and fight that off before continuing on. Eventually you will take the colossus down step by step. As mentioned i haven't played the game but i like the concept.

Mig "colossus" will be a dragon, and i would like to hear your ideas as to how i can make this encounter work.???

SotC does not deal with fighting a creature's arms or the like as separate parts. If that is what you want, it's probably not too difficult to implement. No, in SotC, you climb all the way up the colossus to a special mark, usually on the head, where a hit can kill the creature. There has been a few tries to implement this, at least one very good. Anyone know a link?

Sovereign Court

Guess look at Kaiju's , Kaiju have a special rule that you can climb their body because of how massive they are. Beside that, nothing too special, you can just make different body parts, a different scene, check out this fight:

Kratos vs Poseidon

Scarab Sages

Take a look at the vexing dodger rogue from the Giant Hunter's Handbook.

It's still a rogue, but it has some unique abilities that help this playstyle.

Dot for interest.

I highly suggest watching a few lets play videos if you want to do this, the 3rd colossus may provide the best understanding of how these fights generally work.

You first must find the weak point(s) on the colossus, and then find a way to either climb on top of them, or trick them into putting themselves into a precarious situation that opens them up for attack.

Climb and grapple checks are absolutely necessary. (Ride?)

I would treat all checks as if the character was trying to perform them over difficult terrain, or (during a "shake off" attempt) as if they were performing the check in an earthquake or hurricane scenario.

One may note that in SoTC, most of the colossus (especially humanoid ones) do not typically fight back with much vigor. They ARE NOT aggressors, and instead are ALWAYS defending themselves against attack from the player. In fact, in SoTC, it is questionable whether they are even evil at all, or simply tragic victims of a manipulative demonic force, and the human they influence. They are exceptionally slow and uncoordinated, and should take massive penalties for attempts at unarmed or melee combat with a small/medium opponent.

The ones with magical ranged attacks however, are usually startlingly accurate, and should be treated using a reflex save.

If you really want to go with SoTC, make sure you have the character(s) in question use magical weapons whose main purpose is to slay these colossus. (I think Bestiary 4 has some colossus that match up to them, as well, if you're looking for stats.)

Maybe stick with the whole "Dormin corruption" theme from the game, and have the characters become more and more physically and mentally corrupted, the more colossus they slay?

Depending on which fight you want to sample from, I may be able to help a bit more.

(I've played the game many many times over the 10+ years, one of my favorites.)

Also, good on you for picking quality material to sample from.

Here's a video of one of them, you said yours is a dragon, maybe this will give ideas.

Also, I completely forgot how FANTASTIC the music from this game is, and i'm going to be downloading the entire soundtrack now, it would make great music to play in the background during PC battles.
