Quicken Dimension door Question.

Rules Questions

Okay here is a question I have not been able to find on the forums.

So my question is can Dimension door be cast on someone else's turn when cast as a quickened spell?

A Dimension door spell has only one component verbal.

The definition for Quicken spell on pg 188 of the core rule book says it is equal to a swift action.
Also on page 188 it says a swift action can be used any time a free action can be used.
Again on page 188 a free action says speaking can be used even when not your turn.
On page 184 of the core rule book it says a verbal component must be spoken firmly.

Please let me know what you all think of this.
thank you.

well have to say good lay out of facts, but casting spells that are swift is still on your turn. While immediate can be cast on others turn.

No. You cannot use a Swift action when it's not your turn. The components, or lack thereof, are meaningless.

Speaking as a Free action is a specific exception. You cannot use any other Free action when not on your turn unless you're taking another action off your turn that is a part of said action (drawing an arrow to fire for an AoO with Snap Shot, or the Grab special ability).

There is no action associated with casting a Quickened spell of any sort.

Okay, what if you hold your action or prepare your action to cast said spell in response to another effect?

That is readying an action, so yes you can ready as a standard to cast the spell when something happens.

okay so what happens next, do you cast said D-Door before or after the triggering effect.

as an example let us say wizard "A" has the quicken spell D-Door ready to go when say the first warrior/ melee person was to try to attack him.

what would happen?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Readied actions always trigger before the action that triggered them. Or more accurately BY the action that triggere dthem. If your Ready for "When they swing at me", it goes off when they start to swing (before it connects). Of course if you Ready for "if they damage me" then you don't dodge the amage.

So this is a massive waste of a Quickened spell. It's a Standard to Ready anyway, so you could just ready to D-Door away normally.

Readying an action takes a standard action so using a quicken spell would still leave you with only a move action.

In your example the D-Door should take place before the attack is complete so that when the sword is swung nobody will be there when the sword gets there.

thanks everyone. this helps a lot. :)

You can not take swift actions out of turn, only immediate actions. Quicken spell does not make a spell an immediate action.
