Play program character decks

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Was wondering if the new character decks will be available outside of the play programs. Doubt I can find any stores running it and even if they did the nearest is 1.5 hrs away. I suppose they won't be part of the subscriptions?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

The new character decks should be available wherever the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is sold. They won't be part of the PACG subscription, but subscribers who preorder them will get the usual subscription discount applied to them.

Oh that's cool... so we'll still be able to order them from the site, regardless of whether or not we have a retailer that would participate in an organized play kind of situation. I can't speak for everybody obviously, but I love this game and really want the most full game experience possible.

So these are more along the lines of single character expansions more or less?

Sovereign Court

Not to sound stupid but... more character decks? Did I miss something?

I think this is the organized play version that was announced a while ago. I haven't seen much info on it, but I believe the idea is you will buy a character deck which you can take to your local game store and play with others. Not sure exactly how it will all work, but that is my impression.

I made a public announcement at PAX East.

Sovereign Court

So... Pathfinder Society... for PACG?

Mike, what's your bank account number so I can transfer all my money to you?

The first digit is the square root of the sixth and seventh digits together. The second digit...

So you will be offering Character decks all by them selves. Will they be different characters then the ones in the Boxes, i.e. having a summoner or cavalier which will not be in Skull and shackles and is not in Rotrl.

If we don't have a nearby store, we can preorder the decks I see. But what about the weekly scenarios? Will these be available in some way to subscribers?

Mike, a couple of questions on this, since this is the first time I have seen it:

1) Will there be a Paizo blog post explaining a little more in detail exactly how this will work?

3) Are all of these going to be different from the characters that we can currently play?

3) What are you anticipating being the cost of a single hero? Will they be sold in a package deal at some point, akin to the character expansion?

Thank you,

Has there been any indication of a likely time-frame for this? (i.e. when will the first ones appear)

1) Yes.

2) No. But there will be a lot more options. Seven decks worth, at least.

3) More details coming very soon.

August, have we but world enough and time.

Thanks again, Mike. I can deal with very soon.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

We'll have more coming up in the Paizo blog soon, but I will tell you each character deck will focus on a single class, and includes 4 different characters of that class (and each of those characters will have two different roles, as usual). The fighter deck, for example, will include a new version of Valeros plus three other fighters that *aren't* human males, each with 2 all-new roles to choose from.

Wow. This is pretty exciting. This is huge, actually. Thank you for the info Vic. Just curious, have these characters been playtested and balanced externally? If they have been, which AP are they better suited for, S&S or RotR? I do not want to make assumptions based on the time that they are coming out. I don't know if you are really allowed to answer that yet. Oh well, I can wait for the blog post.

This whole idea has me so excited, I emailed the closest game store to me to see if they had heard about it and whether they planned to do anything with it. There seems to be some Pathfinder Society events there, though the closest venture captain isn't in my state. That sentence essentially encompasses everything I know about Pathfinder Society, so no idea if that relates to PACG at all. I'm curious to see how it is all going to work when that Paizo blog info gets posted.

I've got a feeling lots of FLGS will be very thankful for this effort from Paizo.

My gaming budget is going to have to increase I think... For Pathfinder it will.

Retailers don't know any more about this than anyone else at the moment. We're fixing down the details before we make a broad announcement.

In addition to the characters, the decks will contain a variety of cards useful for characters of that class—some from Runelords, some from S&S, and some designed especially for these decks. (Many of the ones from S&S will actually debut in these decks first, as the Adventure Decks they are drawn from won't have been released yet.)

And while you will need one of these decks to participate in the organized play program, they do function as general accessories for use with any Base Set.

More options are good, especially as the Adventure Card Game universe grows larger and larger. I'm really excited by the support the game is receiving and the options being given to us all. I really can't wait to see everything that will continue to come our way. Many thanks to Mike, Vic and team!

A class based set with 4 characters each? And seven sets at least? This just keeps getting better! 28 extra characters... I don't even know how to handle to that...

So if this is like a society version of the game how will that work with say playing in rotrl and get cards from that deck but say the rotrl box is not yours but the character deck is. Do you have to break down and rebuild your deck everytime?

Another big question is how to mix the cards into your APs. Are they intended to be mixed in with the cards that are already in S&S or RotR?

Vic and Mike, are you going to implement a Venture Officer system similar to that of PFS? I'm going to see how to make this happen at my FLGS. :)

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

Please don't poke your retailers just yet—we have not formally announced it to them, and we won't do so until we are ready to have them sign up to participate. That'll be soon, but it's not now.

In home play, you can add the cards from these decks as usual, as soon as you reach the appropriate chapter.

In organized play... keep your eye on the Paizo blog!

I'm so excited about this new play style! Once they announce some more info, I'm planning to do an interview about organized play with Vic and/or Mike for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Facebook page, so also keep your eyes peeled for that! :)

Here's a question for you guys that I'm curious about... will there be some way of personalizing the cards in your character deck so that they don't get mixed with anyone else's? I'm sure you could initial the edge of the cards or something like that, but it would be nice if there was a little box on each card specifically for putting your own initials or symbol so that they won't get mixed with other players' organized play decks.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

Fighter deck cards will indicate that they came from the fighter deck (for example). So as long as you don't have two players of the same class at the table, sorting cards out afterward is easy.

In organized play, we will prefer to muster tables to avoid class duplication; in cases where that can't happen, players with the same character class will need to pay attention or take notes.

When we do write-on boxes on cards, like the character and role cards, they cannot have the usual varnish on them (if you look closely, you'll notice different gloss levels between characters and other cards). We therefore limit writable areas to cards that never get shuffled.

If it's anything like the current setup, the only times I can recall that your cards usually leave your possession are if they're banished to the box which you could just banish to your own personal deck box, or if you give someone else a card.

You could use your own distinctive protective sleeves with extras for acquired cards so you can't tell those apart while they're in your deck.
