I was going to say the same thing. Your guide has people choosin their name before their race, picking their stats before they even know what class they are and thus what stats they'll need. Seems backwards to me. Especially for new players I tend to find working from Class to Attributes to race to name and background. Basically ask "what do you want to do? How do you want to do it? Where did you come from? And who are you?

Picking your name first means Elfy McGroverson is going to be erasing a lot when he reads the race section and class section and decides to actually play a dwarf warpriest.

Just my 2c.

I don't question how anyone does anything ever.

On a more serious note, the name thing was a hold over from when there was no 'finishing touch' section, that's been moved over towards that section.

As for the order everything's in, originally the order was taken straight from the SRD in how a character should be made, which was really a starting template. Things have been moved around now to the point where they're more organic to what's most important.

And some people really do just go in random directions when they make characters, although I'll agree class is the most important decision in character building.

Also as an aside, anyone who would name their character Elfy McGroverson deserves everything bad that will ever happen to them.

Just like I stated, order of some things has been rearranged, probably gonna put in a tips and tricks section for general advice before the FAQ, but I have a game to run before then.

Thanks, always appreciate the support.

Finally got a tips section up, and I think I'm about done with this guide. After finishing up changing some things around (races no longer have class suggestions), aside from adding new classes when they come out, this works just fine for what it's intended for.

Make sure to share it with anyone interested in playing, and keep letting me know if there's anything you think I should add.

The Exchange

This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for as a brand new player 4 years ago. Bravo.

I have been known to roll d20 + d8 to choose the first letter of a name, then the second letter. Once I have two letters, I pick a name that starts with that pair of letters.

[ = 3, then 5]

What happens when you get dice rolls of 27 and 28? Punctuation?

I really want to see a character named !*

Correction: d20 + d8 - 1, re-roll if > 26

As to "!*", I would play this.

And here I was about to ask what you have against names that start with A.

Name is actually the last thing I choose for my characters. It has little to no impact on anything... It doesn't affect my character's personality or the game mechanics, so it's no biggie. I just pick something that sounds cool and/or appropriate.

Question here, anyone think I should add the occult classes, and if so, any suggestions for where they'd go?

I'm thinking utility specialist for kineticist, mesmerist, and medium; arcane specialist for psychic, not sure of what to go for with the others though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The link seems to be down - did you delete the guide, or did just some funky business happen? It's a pity, because I was hoping to show this to a friend who's just investigating PF.
