Mountaineer (as well as the general case)

So my group had a question on Mountaineer and one of its powers. The first one reads: "Add 2d8 to a Survival check." Can Mountaineer be used to add this bonus to another player's Survival check?

In general, if the text says "a", does that mean "any player's"?

Yes. It doesn't say who's check, so you can play it on any survival check.

The other great thing about Mountaineer, is that 2D8 are worth adding even for someone who doesn't have Survival as a skill (so starts on a single D4)

Mountaineer was definitely a good hookup the first time we played the scenario with the Death Zones. We found two of them in the location decks as we were playing the scenario (and two avalanche-y barriers). Very thematic!

(but now I'm worried that I'm remembering wrong, and that Death Zones don't have allies in their mix and I'm just making it up. It's been almost a year, wow! :D)

Each Death Zone has 1 ally, so that is quite possible. We picked up a Mountaineer too somewhere around this point. They were indeed fantastic, what with the frequency and difficulty of Survival checks late in the game.

I kept a mountaineer for the fight against Karzoug. Very useful card for such a generic name!

Yep, that's exactly what we did - Valeros and Lem kept a Mountaineer each in the Death Zones, and made closing them almost academic. Reveal for a bonus to Survival, recharge to reduce damage by 3, and discard to explore again? Very awesome ally!

The only problem with the deck 6 allies is how briefly their time with you is. D:

When I see an ally with 3 power paragraphs, I know that's the one for me. Totally in love with the Evangelist from the Cleric class deck.
