Skull and Shackles PbP (with Heavy RP) recruitment thread

Recruitment

I'm running a Skull and Shackles game currently on Roll 20 for my home group, and find that I want to add one more as a PbP. We will mostly be doing it as a PbP, but may occasionally meet as a live session (with or without cameras/voice, I have no preference and depends on comfort level of the group) for BBEG boss battles, etc. if the group so chooses. The game will be done explicitly on Roll20 dot net (all my maps and material is there sharing between the two games). IF you aren't familiar with roll20, or haven't ever played there that is NOT a dealbreaker. You will be posting once or twice a day, so you will need to get in the habit of going there frequently. Posting from mobile works well as long as you have a "newish" device that is good enough to do so.

We are looking for probably at least one or two players.

My players will be picking based on character concept and roleplay. I don't want statblocks here. It is a pretty RP heavy group, so that should be a focus.

Any questions for me are welcome. To give you a small sense of my style, I am much less concerned with statblocks and/or killing PCs, and much more concerned with creating a story together.

You are in the Formidably Maid, awaiting "invitation" to join a pirating crew, for that is what you want to be... A pirate! (my players will be filtering in unannounced, but make yourselves at home until they do, and bounce any questions that you would like off of me as well in the meantime.)

Orion walks confidently into the bar and asks the bartender what kind of wine is available. He isn't sure why he just laughed and walked away, I mean...

He scans the room to see if there are any beautiful (or halfway beatiful at this point) women. He looks at the door waiting for his contact. Strange place to be meeting here... and this late at night? There must have been a problem with the delivery, again.

I've tried a couple of times to get into S&S and would really like to play. I could submit this Waves Oracle, or I could go with someone else, depending on party make up So I wanted to ask about who is already in the game. Also, will be we joining a game in progress or will be we starting anew?

To explain why Diana is 5th here - After failing to get into two first level S&S games with her, I did get into a pirate related game but we started at 5th. This game was great, but the DM got too busy to support it soon after it started. It was very RP focused.

So primarily, the play will be here on the forum, with maps over on roll 20. More interesting scenes will be played live on roll20, if timing works out? Do I have that correct?

*drinks a swig of wine* Pirating sounds fun as long as we steal and raid evil. This inquisitor is on board.

Starting anew. :) So far we have a gunslinger and a rogue-base stealth.

Welcome to the thread :)

We will actually be playing 100% on roll 20. Just here to snatch a few recruits. I really like roll 20. It is everything that I wish that Paizo would have done here :)

Welcome.

Welcome Carius.

Orion notices a few people enter the bar, but none of them are the person he is looking for. He sees the lady and wonders if he has a chance. He has never seen her around here before, and ... it can't hurt to try, right?

"Excuse me miss, but do you know the time? I was here meeting someone on business, but it seems like a better offer came my way just now. Can I buy you all a drink?" (Gesturing to the group)

(Btw I don't have Carious's backstory on his profile but I will put it there if need be)

Aye... I think that this is something I would be interested in. I have been wanting to join a S&S game for a while, so maybe now is my chance. I'm thinking of a bardlike character with a bit of a swashbuckler flair. Very boastful, always ready to perform, and willing to try stunts simply for the style.
~~~
Already sitting inside the Formidably Maid is Alkyd Bier, a human woman with a jug of ale in her hand, smile on her face and lute on her back. She has been in town for a few weeks, so she wasn't an unfamiliar face in the tavern, but every night, she would come here drink and boast of the adventures she had been on and -despite their often contradictory nature and questionable veracity- each story was exciting, action packed, and always new.
Those who are just coming in the tavern should be able to hear the last of one of these such tales. "So you know what I did then? I scaled that tower, just barely slipping past the patrolling orcs and climbed in through the window... only to find that the captured Duke was being guarded my two hulking green brutes! I rolled past the first one, slamming this here lute into it's skull," as she said this, she gestured to the well-worn instrument on her back. "The second one took a slash at me, giving me this here nasty scar, but I fought back I tell you! It was a life and death struggle, and though I was tired, wounded, and without my trusty blade, I beat back that bastard and kicked his body out that bloody window! I untied the Duke and we scaled down the side of that tower and brought him back to his lands in Varisia!"
As the cheers spread throughout the tavern, she took a hefty gulp of her ale and raised the mug. "And now if Gozreh be willing, I will take my adventures to the high seas!"
Also sitting in the bar is an aasimar with bright white hair and yellow eyes. He wears a brown hide cuirass and brown pants with metallic tankard symbols embedded in them. Many adventuring tools hang at his side, as does his trusty rapier and punching dagger. An orange cloak surrounds his shoulders and back, where his quiver and shortbow are located. He is swigging down a bottle of fine wine he ordered and surveying the room.
A big,burly human pirate walks over to his table and says gruffly, "Hey,twinkle-head, you're in my seat." In a slightly Scottish-sounding accent, Carious says, while revealing his rapier,punching dagger, and holy symbol by shifting his cloak, "If I were you, I wouldn't try to be a big tough guy for once, lad. Less you be wantin' the Drunken Hero makin' your ale taste like pig swill." The pirate backs off and finds another seat. Carious thinks to himself, "Despicable sorts, but they be takin' drinkin' the right way so I'll let some of it slide"
Watching the scene unfold before her, Alkyd finds that she could only laugh when the Aasimar drives the pirate off. "Oi stranger," she addresses Carious. Don't you worry about Wilkins there. He's a lot like a wee little dog you see. Territorial, yet all bark and no bite. So what brings you here to this fine establishment?"
She pulls up a seat next to the Aasimar and pulls the lute off her back, tuning it slowly before playing a slow shanty.
(Actually I've decided his accent is the type of English one that leans towards Scottish) Carious laughs and says, "Just goin' wherever the enemies of good fun and drink lurk, lassie. I see a demon indulgin' in its perverted sense of fun, it's on the point of my rapier in an instant. If I see some evil cur slip somethin' into a fine lady's drink, he gets a punching dagger scar for his face. But I'm hopin' to find some high sea adventure and be a religious swahbuckler of sorts. By the way, that's a fine tune yer playin' So what are you here for, lass? Didn't catch yer name."
Welcome to the thread :)
Alkyd gives a nod of approval. "Aye, that's a respectable profession if I haven't ever heard one. You're a worshipped of Cayden Caileen aren't you? I saw your holy symbol; quite a fair god to worship in my own opinion. I spread my worship evenly amongst Shelyn, Gozreh, and Cayden, depending on the situation."
She shrugs, and noticing that her drink was almost empty called for another one. She gave a wink to the bartender, "Just put it on my tab for now. I've been here a few weeks, you know I'm good for the money." She then turns her attention back to the Aasimar. "The name is Alkyd Bier, minstrel, adventurer, and future captain of me own ship." She says the last bit wi a smile, but you have the feeling she is being serious with her words.
Why thank you Braydon! And I'm not sure if anyone has noticed yet, but I chose her name to be an anagram, with the letters of one of the most infamous names in all of Pathfinder: "Kyle Baird" the man whose scenarios killed many a PC
Into the formidably Maid slips a slightly built man, hooded and cloaked... with an odd sort of limp and perhaps a hunchback as well... it's hard to tell under the cloak. From the shadows of the hood he scans the crowd from the doorway before entering fully. At his belt is an odd sickle-like weapon with a chain attached to it and a second sickle head attached at the other end. He gives a nod and a barely visible half-smile to any who look his way. He looks about for an available seat, finally settling on standing at the bar, where he greets the bartender like an old friend and orders a whiskey.
"Interesting crowd tonight, eh? All sorts of newcomers to the place, I see. Perhaps something will happen tonight that will make the trek down here worth the cost of a few drinks." When the 'tender is done pouring his drink, he drops some extra gold on the bar, saying "leave the bottle." He downs the first glass in a single draught, pours himself another, but drinks the second more slowly, savoring it. His voice is soft and almost a bit raspy and hoarse, but somehow seems to carry well enough.
When music breaks out in the bar, he hums along, and does a passable job keeping up and staying in the right key. Not too bad for a fellow who can barely carry a tune normally.
perform, sing: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Carious nods,"Ah, always nice to meet a fellow Cayden worshipper. Shelyn's alright, her priestesses are certainly not bad lookers, haha. Gozreh just seems a tad mundane to me, but then again I grew up in a town dedicated to alcohol. Our town brewery was in the church, in fact."
He looks at his bottle, seeing it is running low. "Glad I asked if I could get the Cayden discount on ale." He calls a barmaid over to fill his tankard, then turns back to Alkyd after taking a swig. "Ah, well ya better be ready to compete. I hear around those Shackles parts, they have a hierarchy of pirates, best o' the best. Also, sorry for bein' rude, the name's Carious Resana. If you've traveled much, ya may have have met some of my siblings."
Alkyd looks from Carious to this newcomer (Travis) and gestures the Aasimar to follow her to speak with him. "You seem quite friendly with Barkeep. I've seen you around here often, but I guess I'm just so new in town I haven't been able to learn everyone's name. And who might you be?"
She then turns to respond to Carious. "Ah, trust me friend, drinking is not my area of expertise, though it is a damn enjoyable time. I'm much more of a storyteller. Someone who could get a crowd riled up in a jiffy. That's how I survived most of my adventures... Of course a bit of luck always helps."
Carious follows and extends his hand to the stranger, "Greetin's, my good sir. And what would your name be?"
Carious looks at Alkyd, "Aye, I love a good story, goes good with a good tankard of ale. Luck also comes in handy, although sometimes luck seems to hate people like they just insulted its mother." He gives a little smirk afterwards.
Travis... Travis Brogan, though the name probably won't mean nothin' in these parts. Least ways, not any more. The bartender and I go way back... I've been here a while, trying to get a new berth. Pickings have been a bit dry of late 'round here."
He looks at Carious' hand a moment before extending his own cautiously... but when their hands connect, he breaks into a lopsided smile and nods. "Nice ta meet you too. and who am I meeting this evening?" He looks from Carious to Alkyd to indicate the question was for both of them.
Carious smiles, "Well met, Travis. I am Carious Resana, an inquisitor of Cayden Cailean, at your service." He does a slight bow.
Alkyd gives a grin of her own. "Why the names Alkyd Bier, and I am going to be known as the most feared privateer within the Shackles. Why, I won't rest until justice is served anywhere and everywhere within my reach. Tell you what, once I get myself a ship, you are welcome to join me in my most noble quest." Once again, though said with a smile, you get the strangest feeling that she is being sincere.
"An inquisitor, eh? I've met a few in my life, but I think you're the first one I've met who serves Cayden Cailean. Being an inquisitor always struck me as being a lonely profession. You don't seem to be the lonely sort though, so I'm glad that perhaps I was wrong. How did you come to find yourself in Port Peril, Carious?"
"Alkyd? That's an unusual name for a young lady, but you strike me as a most unusual young woman so 'tis fitting, I guess. A crusading privateer, eh? That will be an interesting combination to be sure. I wish you all the best in getting a ship of your own... that is a noble goal in and of itself!"
Carious looks at Alkyd and continues to smile, "I would be happy to join ya,lass, if ya be needin' a religious sort aboard or just a stalwart companion who can supply the ale for high morale"
Carious turns to Travis and says, "Aye, as a Cayden Cailean inquisitor, it's easy to make friends. I mean, I spread the word of happiness and drinkin' for fun. What's not to love? Sure, I've had to smack around some sorrowful drunks and there was that one time I beat a dretch demon to death in the middle of the street, but otherwise, I'm generally welcome. As for what brought me here, well, what normally brings people here. The adventure on the high seas, the freedom that it brings.... speaks very well to my religion."
"Aye, it would at that. And ye be seekin' the best sort of adventure there is. But it's not all fun and games... freedom is, well, I guess, easiest way to say it, it's not always free. I've had to fight for mine more than once, I must say."
"Aye, I've heard of those pirates that steal off with people after they've been drinking. I despise those kind, goes against my beliefs, so naturally,as an inquisitor, they're on my hit list."
"'Tis a good thing that drink has little affect on me, or I'd likely have found myself on the wrong sort of ship, eh? I can see how those who take advantage of drinkers would go against your grain. It's not just pirates that use such recruiting methods... I've heard of military ships and even merchantmen that resort to them in tough times as well. Unpleasant thought, to say the least. Just disturbs my wa to even think about it." He shakes his head and sighs softly. "Bad news, those sorts, aye." ... and he takes another sip of from his glass, topping it off again from the bottle.
"Can I offer either of you a drink?"
Alkyd shakes her head and raises her glass. "I think this will be my last one for the night. I think you've thoroughly frightened me with your talk of people throwing people who have had too much to drink on ships. Its all fun and games until someone is sold into slavery. My brother was one of those unfortunately souls who have decided to walk the path of a slaver."
She shuddered at the thought of her estranged family member. When her family found out what he had been doing with his life, those were bad times... Hopefully no one recognized her namesake, or they might question her owning a ship, let alone trusting her with the title of privateer. Perhaps she should not have mentioned him... It was hard to kill her storytelling habit.
"Aye, any slavery rubs me the wrong way...plus it's my job to end it. Makes me be able to get along with those Milani priests just fine."
He holds up his tankard and takes a swig,"Thanks for the offer, but I've got a mighty fine mug right here."
Carious looks at Alkyd and says,"Sorry to frighten ya,lass. If need be, I will refrain from saying anymore on the subject."
*Wanders in... seemingly following her pert nose.... and ambles slightly randomly up to the bar...*
"I would like has Rum, please..." Says the tanned Elf confidently... who then blinks before twisting to rummage though the small pack at her hip. Eventually producing some coins... Some of which she begins working at getting some of the verdigris and other time worn ocean effects clear of...
Travis shrugs, "Offer's open if'n ya change your mind. Met a son of a Milani priestess once. Fellow was all sorts of messed up in the head, but his mother sounded like a right sort. Very much a passionate freedom fighter."
"Ah now there's a lass for you, Carious... ordering rum, no less. And she has the look of one who's been sun-kissed too. Right pretty young lady." He raises his glass in Sunny's direction.
"Milani folk seem alright by me, a bit radical, but they do good work in Cheliax, I hear."
Carious looks in Sunny's direction. "Aye, an elf who can hopefully hold that much alcohol. Has the same lifespan as my kind as well, if I remember right. We'll see, although I'm one of those "wait for the right one" types. Doesn't mean I don't look occasionally." He smirks.
Having sorted her coin payment the tanned Elf turns, holding the large mug in both hands -she takes a sip of the beverage, licking at her lips having tasted the mugs contents- and now looks out at the customers. She offers a bright smile to any who make eye contact with herself.
(^_^)
Travis chuckles, coughing a little to hide the laugh. "Like you, I await 'the right one', but as you say, there's no harm in looking and I'm all in favor of enjoying the sights. Besides, having not met 'the right one', I still need to be open to meeting anyone who might qualify. You never know."
"Haha, aye, you never know which lass could be the one. Although you also don't know when they might be a succubi, waitin' to drain your soul."
Perception roll:1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
And she begins to follow the sounds of chuckling and laughter... wandering towards Travis and Carious.
"Hey-YA there!" She offers brightly, though still holding her mug with both hands. (^_^)
Carious turns to the tan elf and bows slightly, "Well met, I am Carious Resana, Inquisitor of Cayden Cailean, at your service."
The tanned Elf nods and also 'flops' forwards at the waist as a bowing reply, (Her mug remaining deftly upright) in response to Carious' introduction.
"Aye, right met! Me name be 'Suny' in'a speakin' of tha' peoples." She replies as she bounces back upright, looking at those seated about the tavern's table brightly. Another sip of Rum being taken.
I may have to adjust the character avatar. I am unsure if the game behind this character has succumbed to time....
Also, time zones and shift work give me both large and small windows for posting. At the moment, I am fortunate enough to be blessed with a 'free' period. When I am busy I usually have some time to add small, simple posts. I also have small windows of opportunity to add posts while working.
Carious snickers a bit at the strange movements of the elf, "Pleased to meet you, Sunny. What brings you to this fine establishment?"
"Oh! I bin hearin' tha' fun an'a laughin' from outsides. Then, I bin followed me nose an' found tha' Rum!" Sunny presents her mug proudly. Then she frowns,
"Though.. I be here abouts more ta' be learnin' me speakin' proper.... " She confides. "I ken be speakin' right enough... but some words I dun't know an' other words..." Her voice trails off and she shrugs absently.
Carious smiles, "Ah, I see. I wish you luck in learnin' the common language. Pretty useful, considerin' most of the world speaks it."
"Hullo Sunny. Name's Travis. Nice to meet." He offers a stiff bow. "Your words are fine Sunny, though you could learn a bit of syntax, I'm sure that will come in time. The more you speak and the more you listen, the easier it will all become, I'm sure."
Sunny nods in reply/agreement. "I bin havin' a good learner...." And she frowns, pausing.
"No... that in't tha' right word....um... " And she leans against the table as she ponders the word she means to say. Mouth silently working through options, even as she again absently sips at her mug.
She blinks, distracted by Travis' introduction to which she offers again her fluid, full flop forwards.
"Thank-e muchly!" (^_^) Then tilts her head.
"Whut's a 'Syn-tax'?" She looks around, "Izz that somat more I got'a give me shine too...?" Blinking back to Travis, "Aye! I learned lot-sa words since I bin here!" And she begins to recite some of the louder words she's heard called across the docks. XD
"... an' 'Fekker'." She finishes proudly.
"Though I in't sure what a lot of 'em mean yet. Nor why some of 'em gots ta' be 'thicker' or 'larder' or such..." And she again begins to ponder the complexities of the language she's trying to learn.
Carious leans in, "I believe you meant teacher."
"Did you mean to say 'I've had a good teacher'? Travis offers as an alternative to what she actually said, doing his best to decipher what she might have meant.
