There is nothing to stop you playing two or more characters when playing solo which was my approch when I started. The sweet point of the game seems to be about 3 or 4 characters/players.
But if you want to play a single character Merisial may be a good one to start with as she gets benifits when she is at a location by her self.
When playing with a single character the blessing deck count down will not be your main issue it will be surviving. At the other end of the scale when playing with 5 or 6 characters surving is not such a problem but completing the senario before the blessing deck runs out is.

Both Lini and Seelah have an easy way to add a Bonus-die to every Check they do, so they can deal with Checks on their weaker Skills a lot better than the other Characters.
Plus both have access to Healing-Magic.
On the downside Lini is average in Combat and her reliance on Spells will make this even whorse, while Seelah has a really unfavorable Starting Deck and Hand.
If you are willing to invest the Time I suggest you try a few Characters that look interesting to you and then play your favorites as a team in following adventures.

Cool. Thanks for the advice guys.
I've solo'd Lini and Merisiel all the way up to cornering Black Fang and then losing there. +P
But I'm trying a game now with a 3 character group Lini/Lem/Harsk and I can see now how well adventuring as a party works. Especially since you can temporarily close locations which you can't do solo.

The other boon is other characters can play a blessing to help out the character who's turn it is.
My wife and I are playing Valeros and Merisiel, I have Valeros carrying around one bow (Shock Longbow +1) mainly just so I can toss her a d4 in a combat from time to time. We're usually only at the same location if it's the last one.

Some characters are harder than others, but I've played all of the characters solo in Blackfang and Brigadoom, and they're all capable. Some characters get stuck (and couldn't complete a scenario sometimes) but I never died.
Lini is my favorite character and I've soloed Lini all the way to the end of Burnt Offerings and found it fairly easy (she never gets stuck like other solo characters). Never came close to dying and I've finished some scenarios extremely fast (less than 10 turns). She is probably too powerful (and I've barely upgraded her), but I enjoy playing her none-the-less.

Merisiel is very powerful solo, but you will see a decline in her at adventure 5 or so. There was one scenario I had to replay about 4 times to make a required Int 12 check on her d4, and I got completely stomped by the final scenario.
But in general not really having to worry about either combat or barriers makes for a very strong play experience.

I'm a bit of a completist when I really get into something, so I started off with Valeros, Merisiel, Ezra, and Kyra. I played through a few adventure paths, got the character add on and decided to start up Sajan and Lini. Now I play each scenario twice in two groups of 3 characters. After each scenario is won my character "meet" with the other characters and swap boons. I plan on playing through the whole game this way, then go back and play through it again with the 5 remaining characters I didn't use.
I feel like this is a really fun way to play as it adds the dynamic of choosing different parties each time you play a scenario. Sometimes the mix works well and sometimes it's more difficult.
