Stonelord or straight up Paladin?

Advice

Silver Crusade

After losing my first character, I was playing around in PCGen and created a Dwarf Stonelord. He survived his first three adventures, and as I was leveling him up, it seemed the Stonelord advantages just don't seem to measure up. Heartstone is nice - especially with the DR - and seems better than Divine Grace, but Stonestrike seems to have nothing on Smite Evil.

As Stonelord, I was running
STR 15
DEX 15
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 14
CHA 10

with Ironhide for Feat. I had originally planned on a Two Weapon Fighting build (hence the 15 DEX) but fell into being the Tank, which worked for me. The Dex bonus worked for AC and for my crossbow, so I was loathe to change it.

As a Paladin, I would have
STR 14
DEX 14
CON 15
INT 10
WIS 12
CHA 13

The character concept has him having all his hair cursed off at some point, and had joined the Pathfinder Society to find a way of reversing the curse. He wears a full helmet with a false beard showing, and never ever takes it off.

Our next adventure has been postponed twice, so I have a little time to decide on his final build, but I'm really torn.

If you are the meat shield for the group then it is really hard to beat a stonelord. Personally I love a reach build stonelord. Go for the goblin cleaver to orc cleaver and you really start to shine later on.

You still get Stonestrike which is nice as it works on everything evil or not. You build up uses of it reasonably well for an ability that applied for a whole round. Not as good as smite evil against a black dragon for instance but overall not horrible.

The first time you trash a golem's or a stone skinned wizard you'll be quite happy with yourself.

I find the stonelord to be a lot of fun. Me personally I agree with Grond with getting a reach weapon. Get your stonelord a dwarven long hammer, and a dwarven boulder helmet. Get combat reflex and lunge for your defensive stance, and get some potions of enlarge person or a wand if you can find someone to cast it one you. Plus having an earth elemental that can search for you would be nice.

Scarab Sages

Also, if you are going to be playing iron gods or PFS season 6 scenarios, Stonelord ignores hardness. For constructs and robots, this is much better than smite.

Stonelord is fun, plus it allows you to not have to rely as much on charisma, frankly I really think Stonelord is underrated, as it was perfectly made to fit a dwarf.

Just sad that his stone servant sux so hard with only 12hp from level 5-7

Yeah, although it gets much better when it starts to grow. I do wish it followed the standard companion progression though.

I also wish the pet had progression but it is freaking invaluable. Use it to scout ahead in dungeons or in open terrain or in towns.

Thanks everyone... looks like the consensus is Stonelord after all. I'd already picked up the Boulder Helmet and a Longhammer regardless. I'm tempted to try to finagle the CHA up to 12 just to get an extra lay on hands, dropping DEX to 14

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Remember to choose Fatigue for your Level 6 Mercy (the only one you retain as a Stonelord). That way you can drop out of Defensive Stance and re-enter it again without waiting for the fatigue to wear off normally.
