SKR is a very skilled developer, that much is pretty obvious. Admittidly he's also a very prickly person on these forums, but then again the spines of a porcipine exist to respond to attacks.
I don't think he was the mastermind behind everything that is wrong in the system, but as the companies face on the forums he had to tow the company line on any issues. Now that he no longer staffs at Paizo it's very obvious he has different design paradigms than Paizo.
I still am a little wary in my interactions with him because of the vitriol we spat back and forth, but I recently apologized and I'm trying to look at what he posts in the best light of interpretation as opposed to the worst. I'm even keeping an eye on the Kickstarter he's running over the next month and will probably back it.
In playtest 2 I thought the Hunter and Brawler were terribad and useless. The Skald cool, but underdeveloped. By final release these three classes turned out to be some of my favorites.

I used to despise his Pathfinder design philosophy. Having seen some of his non-Paizo stuff, I'm tending toward believing the above was the case.
I know I've had some of my own work twisted into unrecognisability by editors and been obliged to say 'it's good'.

Sean is an AMAZING designer, pure and simple. I know a few vocal people used to disagree with him quite repeatedly, but the simple reality is that he is very experienced and very, very good at what he does.
Interestingly, I've always found him to be a very nice and decent person. The only time I saw him get tough with people on the forums was when they got like that first with him. Sean just didn't sit back and take it and I think that ticked a few people off.
I'm sure lots of people would love to give their opinions - the difference is not everyone's opinion is worth the same amount. Sean's opinion of game design is worth a million bucks ...

Louis, your thread title was intentionally provocative - you don't think that would have spawned discussion on said topic? :)
People who didn't read the blog post only saw "SKR ripped me a new one"
That being said, I've met SKR in person and never had an issue with him, so I won't comment on that portion of the discussion... but I have considered getting his feedback on things, I just don't have anything personally ready for that right now, since I'm wrapping up so many things that have been delayed.

Removed a few posts and replies to them. I don't think that digging up past disagreements and contentious threads that are generally unrelated to this topic is going to end up going all that well here. Please understand that comments made towards other people within our community are weighted the same, whether the person is from Paizo, a 3PP, or otherwise, and we'd really rather not have this thread turn into a pile-on or a space to dredge up old negative feelings from all sides. Let's move forward and be cool to each other, please.

Thanks Chris and I apologize if I said anything that might have offended anyone.

Back on topic... I was fortunate enough to be the guinea pig for Sean's course, so feel free to blame me rather then him for any rough rides - I actively encouraged a no holds barred feedback in order to get as much design knowledge out of his head and into mine as I could.
And I still win the ripping feedback from Sean...
doodly do, doodly do, doodly do, while wagging fingers in a downward motion - it's now around 4 years ago, I post my item for voluntary feedback...
It seems my item gave Sean a headache and sent him home (his words not mine), and that feedback can still be found if you search for it - it was the year Neil powered through the thread revealing the raw judge feedback for the first time.
And you know something, I look back and that feedback of Sean's was absolutely spot on - people don't want that much maths in an item, it was boring even though I thought at the time I was being clever and quite frankly deserved the panning it got.
I can also point at that very feedback and say thanks for the kick up the wotsits I needed to stop being a fan boi and start being a designer. I haven't got there yet, but I believe 100% I am miles better than I was then.
And Sean's course - it showed me what I was tackling wrong in my designs, how to look at the wording and structure in the book to replicate the language use.
Net result, I got selected for Wayfinder 12 this issue - and all three of my submissions were much larger and more complex than an item - 2 monsters and a flavor piece - I don't yet know which submissions have been accepted but I am sure that without that course, I wouldn't have gotten in (the Wayfinder competition has stiffened immeasurably issue by issue and is a brilliant yardstick for your current level of design skills).
In short, if you are serious about getting into games design, this course is a brilliant way to get started in earnest.

Great story! Sean is an amazing designer and his feedback is pretty much always spot on

I've talked to Sean a couple times about things I was working on and he's always been very fair, praising something done smartly and asking the blunt questions that might make you facepalm and doubt yourself; but if you take those questions and suggestions and learn from them, you'll end up much better off.

Personally, I've been reading game materials with Skreyn's name on them since back in the days of Second Edition, and I have a very positive impression of them.
In terms of the man himself, I've almost never interacted with him directly on these forums, and I suspect that I missed the majority of his posts, but what I did see was virtually always thought-provoking, even when I disagreed with it.
His thread about how there shouldn't be a material component cost for the raise dead spell, for example, was fascinating to consider.

I have met SKR more then a few times (I think Ive introduced myself something like a half-dozen times, lol) and at GenCon 2013, I actually yelled out to him as he was walking in front of the Frog God Games booth. His response? He came in, talked to me a for a bit just shooting the $hit, and generated maybe a couple hundred $ in sales for us, just by being there talking to me.
Sean is a great cat; a HUGE resource for miniatures, both in painting and terrain, and one of the measuring sticks for all game developers. You don't have to agree with his philosophy 100%, but anything he says is worth consideration. And spending $50 to have him personalize his critique of your work? A BARGAIN. If you can't take criticism, you're in the wrong hobby.

On a separate note, LMPJr.'s title to the thread is pure sensationalism. One might question if he's more sizzle than steak?
Or a marketing genius?

When I offer freelance jobs to several of the individuals mentioned in this thread at 8 cents a word, I will call it a good business strategy of only hiring the best people that people want to buy.
And if you think LPJ Design is all sizzle, check out End's review of Obsidian Apocalypse. That's ALL STEAK!! Prime grade A!!!
