Out of country playing and additional resources

Hello all,

I have been planning on visiting some of the big conventions in Europe and possibly in the USA once I have the chance. Of course, I would like to meet new people while having a friendly game of miniature chess.

The problem comes from the following:

I have a character. A variant Tiefling Gun Scavenger Gunslinger, who has items, feats, traits, and other stuff from at least the following books:

Core
Advanced Race Guide (base tiefling)
Advanced Player's guide (Reactionary)
Ultimate Combat (Gunslinger)
Ultimate Equipment (items)
Ultimate Campaign (Highlander)
Blood of Fiends (variant heritage)
Inner Sea Combat (Gun Scavenger)
Inner Sea World Guide (Language, Tian)
and some more.

I have every single of those in dead tree form, but that seems to mean I can't play in for example GenCon without sending them ahead. Am I right or is it Ezren for me because I'm an outsider?

You can knock the ARG off as the base tiefling is also in Blood of Fiends. Highlander is in the APG, so you can get rid of Ultimate Campaign too. Only the most officious of GMs would call you out for having Tien listed as a language (especially given that it merits a mention in the GtPFSOP) so you can probably discount the ISWG too.

Personally I buy the PDFs of the hardbacks, as at $10 each they're great value to have on a tablet, even when I have the hardcovers too. I'd suggest it as a solution.

The other option is to start up a character or two that only use a small subset of resources.

You can make a Core only character, or choose from a smaller group of Additional Resources to make a new character, so that you don't have to lug all of those items around.

Conversely, you could purchase those items in PDF format and print out the relevant pages you wish to use, or bring the PDF on a tablet/phone that is accessible at the table.

This requirement is the same whether you're playing at home, going to a local store or flying halfway across the world...

If you're only using traits from the Advanced Players Guide, you can just bring the free trait document download instead, which contains all the APG traits. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find that document right now - the link in the Guide to Organized Play for it seems to be busted.

And I agree that nobody's going to call you out on the Tian language, and base tiefling is alos in Blood of Fiends.

So it looks like you only need Ultimate Combat, Ultimate Equipment, Blood of Fiends, and Inner Sea Combat, unless your "and some more" is also necessary stuff. The hard covers are usually only $10 for the PDFs, and the splat books are probably light enough to carry a couple of them. So you should be able to do this without spending too much on PDF duplicates of books you already own.

And frankly, most GMs won't call you out on it. You might be able to get away with photocopies of the important pages from your hard copy books, in case they need to look up the rules, and just explaining how far you had to travel.

One thing to note is that if you buy the PDFs, print outs from those PDFs will have a watermark with your name/email address on top which is also legitimate. Thus, if you don't have a tablet/laptop you wish to use for the table, you can print out only the pages required (such as the Gunslinger pages UC, the pages from the ARG that list the tiefling stats, the Ultimate Equipment items, etc). I do that with my wizard who has spells from several sources so I can just carry a couple of books or just the few softcovers that I don't have on PDF.

Actually it doesn't: Highlander (one of the traits mentioned by the OP) is in the APG but not in the free PDF, sadly.

If he has the physical books, I imagine it's not exactly a convenient option to purchase the PDFs.

You're required to 1) prove that you own the source book the content you're using is from and 2) provide a copy of that content so that the GM can verify its correct usage and make rulings accordingly.

Is there a VO in your area? Maybe you could have them notarize that you have physical copies of these books, and then you can scan the pages you need for the content you use and bring them to conventions. On that note, I'd probably also honor receipts that prove purchase of said books if you happen to have those handy (in conjunction with the scanned pages).

Mike Brock probably has some good ideas.

Alas, the standard is, you have to bring the books or the watermarked PDF's. Because of a bunch of people complaining and pushing the envelope, this sort of photocopy-handwritten-note kind of stuff is not legal. Now, some GMs might not even ask you for the details, but you are taking the risk, and they can ask you to play a pregen instead.

Bummer. Hope someone comes up with a better idea =\
