In Character:

An elf, with a small cadre of associates both armed and unarmed surrounding him, steps up onto a crate he has carried with him into the square. "Friends! Allow me to graciously request that you lend your ears and a bit of your time and consideration! I ask that you imagine with me now, close your eyes and envision. In the high hills there stands a city. It bears tall stone walls, providing safety to all who consider it home and all who visit to perform their business functions. These walls, first to be kissed by the rising sun stand protected from the evils of this world by strong folk, good folk. Not the abusive and corrupt soldiers of The Citadel or of Thornkeep, but men and women who treat you as the sentient and independent people we all wish ourselves to be! Imagine a citizenry where your neighbor is more apt to help you repair a storm-damaged roof than they are to sneak through that broken window to steal your valuables. Where people come together not through coercion, but freely and willingly for the mutual benefit of all! Where your fellows know that true strength comes from willing cooperation. They understand that a force working together without oppressive oversight can perform wonders stronger than can be attained by any mighty individual and that the benefits of those wonders last longer than those constructed tyrannical overlord that works slaves into death. Imagine with me, this shining beacon standing tall in the world and proving beyond any doubt that being Goodly folk is not only a feat of moral strength but that it is also the best path for creating a successful, stable, and secure populace. I ask that you consider joining me in this haven of bright futures. This city which will protect the weak. This city which will support anyone of benevolent intentions in growing their ability. This city which will stand as a beacon of freedom and opportunity regardless of social class or history. Together, let us build something that will boldly face the test of time! Now come, and speak to me if you wish to partake in this adventure!"

Out of Character:

Brighthaven is going to be a Neutral Good settlement focused on defending its citizens and its allies from non-consensual PvP while striving to become a large and shining beacon for Good. Whether you wish to benefit from this protection or you love PvP and wish to assist in providing this protection, Brighthaven aims to be the home and support center for you! Though being envisioned and founded by The Empyrean Order, we seek to form a collaborative settlement with any who share in this stated vision. We have planned a merit-based representation system in the governance of the settlement. Though our initial charter proposal is still undergoing some internal review and revision, we will be making its current form available to potential member companies upon request such that interested parties may provide feedback for consideration. You may contact me either in or out of character at your preference. I am amenable to both preferences.

IC:
*The figure on the corner of the plaza, swathed in charred leather with an equally charred blank metal facemask begins to chuckle softly; a dry, raspy cough is all that is emitted. The figure pauses to bow deeply in the direction of the speaker before picking up a little black sparrow off his shoulder and walking off*

It has been a long journey, this. Tacitus, my animal companion, and I have traveled for many months to the far reaches of these realms and back. We have encountered many foul beasts, many humanoids even more foul. We have visited those wretched hives in the darkest, most sinister corners of this world. All the while we have found solace in the fact that we have been there to aid those innocent, weary travelers who may otherwise have fallen victim to the evils this world has to offer.

And now we crest this familiar mountain, the rising sun spreading its bright rays of warmth over us like a Phoenix, illuminating that noble settlement below; it is home, it is Brighthaven! Tonight I will rest my head on a soft bed in the one place in this land where the innocent can go about their lives free of the threat of the sword or claw - Brighthaven! A shining beacon of light in the darkness that is this world. An island of good in a sea of evil. A deep pool of refreshing cool water in an oasis surrounded by scorched, lifeless desolation. A finely cut gemstone, its facets gleaming, in a sewer of villainy.

Come Tacitus, it is good to be home again!

"A shadow encroaches! We seek to provide shelter from the danger! Will none join us to defend our brothers and our sisters who are not able to defend themselves?"

"Tell me now. Is there a man among you here?
Is there no one who will stand up and try to fight?
Tell me Man, is there not one in all your ranks? Is there not one who values courage over life?"

((Yes, that second paragraph is a blatant pull from The Protomen's The Stand.))

Nice line.

And totally from Boondock Saints.

He knows of the Protomen. Yet another reason he should be our leader.

I am much more story-inclined than musically inclined. As such, the fact that they are weaving a story throughout their albums makes them one of my favorites. The Stand (Man or Machine) is probably my favorite.

Slightly in character:

Well, Mr. Moonglow, looking around this mountaintop, I see a lot of stone lands. Stone for a town, iron for arms. Land for creating holdings and quarries and mines.

But that iron isn't going to mine itself. You've got a good crowd with you, but there's room for more to work here, to cut the stone and grub the iron and build a place for themselves and their neighbor. A person can do worse with their time here in the River Kingdoms than protect others or put in an honest day's work.

There's work here. Warfare, too. I don't think anyone needs to be a seer to know that there will be war though all of these lands soon enough. And when war comes it will be good to have iron in our hand, stone around us, and plenty of companions and neighbors with us.

"The location is secure. A home is ready. There is work to be done! But not all is common labor or even the waging of wars. There is room on governing panels, in offices of influence and planning. Councilors and diplomats. Teachers and merchants.Opportunity awaits in Brighthaven!"

Fairly active recruiting today. Be sure to consider Brighthaven as a home! This Neutral Good settlement is poised for a solid start and is positioned for plenty of expansion potential. Whether you are looking to build something great, or hoping to spin up your own settlement once you get a solid company established, Brighthaven is the place to be!

Goblin Squad Member

And, you know, the settlement that has the most numbers right now ;)

Remember how I mentioned how people join because people join? My discussions on the City-on-a-Hill syndrome? My cautions against the "larger groups"?

Despite being a "larger group" we are still relatively small for expected settlement sizes. Which is why we are inviting other groups to work with us. And we certainly have interests beyond our little hill, as a good number of our friends are not on our little hill.

Brighthaven: a clean, well-lighted place.

Brighthaven is still looking for individuals and groups that would be willing to collaborate with us (TEO) in building a vibrant settlement with incredible neighbors. We are looking for friends and teammates, not vassals or serfs.

Morning, Thornkeep, a square near an inn. A dapper Elf mounts his soapbox to address a small crowd. Next to the inn, a halfling in need of a shave and a bath sits up abruptly in the back of a wagon, showering the cobbles with empty bottles. He rubs his scarred face and smacks his lips muttering 'Too bright, close the shutters love...' he trails off, blinking as he notices the Elf and crowd, et al. "Can't a guy get some sleep around here ?" he squeaks. Ignoring their glares, he clambers down from the wagon and staggers into the inn. Through the door can be heard " A beer, for pity's sake ! And who broke all this glass ? "

(If your hearts in the right place, Brighthaven's the right place. 'Warts and all')

Well said Pino!

Join us in Brighthaven, some elf said. Yer a refiner, meet us in Keeper's Pass, some dwarf said.

There's a fight at a tower on the Golgotha border, someone yells. Grab your bow.

We're dealing with Ustalavians tonight, the captain of the guard announces. Carry a bow. Wand or staff if you know how to use them.

And at the end of a couple hours of raiding the Ustalavians they tally up their loot: several recipes they may be able to use in a month. One recipe noone will use for a year.

And 28 silver in her pocket. A good night for a simple tanner.
