What counts as family for the Kin Guardian trait?

Kin Guardian: You are dedicated to defending members of your family. When you use the aid another action to give a member of your family a bonus to AC, increase the bonus by 2. This increase is a trait bonus (and therefore doesn't stack with increases granted by other family members using this trait). This trait has no effect when using the aid another action to increase a family member's next attack roll.

Is there a description somewhere about how closely related someone has to be to count as family? It seems like there should be but even Ultimate Campaign's write-up on lineage and family is pretty much just vague fluff to encourage deeper back-story building, and that includes distant relatives.

Why would there be a description of what counts as family? it's self evident isn't it?

That said, if you feel the need to codify it, the only limit you can really put on it is that there must be some basis (blood or marriage for example) and that the player has to know them and accept that they are family.

Otherwise you get into murky territory - do you count non-blood relatives such as in-laws, adopted kin, how many generations count, etc. and it just gets messy and, if we're honest, a little silly.

Not at all. Even in the "real world" there are huge differences in what or who is "family" depending on where you live or what you're trying to do.

and that's all the more reason for them not to try and codify it officially. family is a messy business.

Looks like adopting your party members as siblings is the way to go......

(or just taking Adopted: Helpful (Halfling) - which gives the same bonus but much broader)

"Family: Your family means everything to you, and there is nothing you wouldn’t do for them. Maybe your ties extend to your entire clan or bloodline, or perhaps there is one specific member of your family you hold closer than any other. You gain access to the Family Ties drawback."

[Ultimate Campaign, pag 49]

Maybe, this description is valid even for the Kin Guardian trait's requirement.
