Sure, its better to go two hitter. But you can go melee only. One idea that I had was to play a throwing/ two weapon fighting ranger with chakram, following the two weapon fighting style. It count as light weapon, you will be able to stack all the weapon feat on a single weapon and to attack foes at short range.
other than that: if you plan to go with a two-handed weapon, you will have some feat to burn anyway, so go for the switch hitter. You cannot be as tanky that the fighter/paladin/barbarian, so it's good to keep an option for the moment you are wounded, or when your are fighting a flying creature. Anyway, you should have a decent DEX so it's not lost.
