outsider lich

Rules Questions

can a outsider become a lich basically I got a idea for a vilian so by raw can they?

Liberty's Edge

It states only a living creature can be a lich, as far as I know outsiders are living creatures (assuming it means living or dead) although the antilife shell states that outsiders are not counted as living for that spell. I think they could be a lich but its a bit conflicting.

ok thanks I'll say it works thank you

Actually it doesnt :S

Outsiders have no split between the body and soul, if an outsider dies then technikly the body becomes unusable, there is no soul receptacle as there is nowhere to put the soul, the body was the soul, which is why Demon/Angel deaths are so appropriately depicted as them burning up literally.

Furthermore, the key principle of lichdom is seperating the body and soul, which is impossible for an outsider.

Final note: "Native" outsiders are an exeption to many rules that apply to outsiders and blur the lines between creature types. Aashimars and Tieflings and eemental kin are all valid Lich choices in my opinion.

Of course, none of this is Raw nor is it established as Rai, so theres nothign stopping you as GM to make this call, but there might be some players that would call b!@&!@~+ on this, so make sure you hint at this beforehand so that youre not stuck with "Its my world and I do what I want" as an excuse afterwards.

Since normal Outsiders souls and bodies are one and the same so becoming something like a Lich which requires them to put their soul in a phylactery I don't think they could become a Lich unless they had the Native subtype but other types of undead should be possible.

If body and soul are the same, wouldn't putting a hand in a phylactery work?

I just heard about the libris mortis lichfeind so hows that work?

No. A hand is part of you. The phylactery requires the full thing.

Considering it's 3.5e bloat? Not very well.

Based on body/soul duality (or lack thereof for outsiders), they're excluded from being liches.

As for the 3.5 libris mortis lichfiend, I think it fails on the same grounds of not making sense for the creatures it's talking about.

But that's just me, not an official ruling.

Not a problem according to RAW. Magic jar works on non - Native outsiders, indicating that even if an outsider's soul and body are normally one unit, it is possible to separate them. The requirements for the lichen template do not exclude outsiders, therefore they can become one.

Liches can not be outsiders per RAW because they are one unit. That is why even in 3.5 they had to have special liches when used with outsiders. the idea is that the soul lies in the phylactery and when the body dies the phylactery reforms the body, but outsiders can do this because the soul is the body.
