Build Advice: Throwing Axe?

Advice

I've always had a liking towards throwing axe people in video games/shows etc. So, i'm curious to see if this is a viable build. We're still pretty new to Pathfinder but I'm pretty set on using only throwing axes for our new campaign, but i would like some help on how to build him. Stats/feats/etc.. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

What level will you be playing?

Throwing weapons generally suck, but at low levels this difference isn't as obvious. A ranger switch-hitter build with TWF and rapidshot (so medium DEX high STR) with blinkback/mighty hurling belt is usually your best bet.

Blinkback Belt is pretty much required for you as you don't want to need like 5 fully enchanted weapons and Returning weapons come back at the end of the round. Unfortunately you would also need to take Quick Draw for this if you wanted to full attack.

Sliding Axe Throw is also a really good feat for what you want to do; for any individual ranged axe throw (or all of them) you do you can choose to take -2 to hit and get a free trip attempt!

Build wise I would perhaps consider Archery style Ranger as pretty much all the feats there apply to your thrown axes as well. Ranger also has the benefit of getting your higher end feats earlier than any other class due to your bonus feats not needing prerequisites.

If it's not PFS have your GM look into the old "Master Thrower" class

You can easily rework a bit if it to work for PF

An alchemist could probably work pretty well. The grenadier class gets you a martial weapon prof for free, if you are a dwarf that means dwarven war axe. With throw anything you can hurl that sucker pretty nicely, and when you need a little more boom you have bombs or can strap alchemical substances (like alchemists fire) to your axe whether you throw it or melee swing with it.

Indeed, Ranger is a good way to go.

Magus or bloodrager with arcane strike could help with the need to have multiple magical axes.

You could also reflavor shuriken as small throwing axes. You would use a regular axe of you choice as your melee, but when you need to throw shuriken are treated as ammunition of enchantment purposes so that also helps to alleviate the problem of enchantments as well.

Shuriken would be very small throwing axes indeed.

ooo i actually am working on this exact character as we speak. using stone axes with the fragile quality you can really max your damage with the fragile feats. their names elude me at the moment, sorry.

but you take twf, rapid shot, point blank shot, clustered shot, and the fragile feats.

you want to go with a fighter for all the feats you need, and a few levels of barbarian for the hurler ability.

raving dork made the character im basing this build off of. it is a rock thrower but i dont have the link.

damn i completely forgot that grenadier could do that.. i may have to work that into my build.

as for the lack of magical bonuses im thinking a little gm fiat to change the doubling dagger into a doubling axe, or just reskin it.

Blinkback Belt is indeed required. Try to make sure you can get Str, Dex, and Con boosts in different body slots than belt for the same price. Last I knew, in PFS you can't, in other games it's undetermined what the rule is. If you can't, it's going to suck since you need blinkback but also need str and dex at a minimum for attack/damage.

I would also strongly suggest Two-Handed Thrower feat (combined w/ Quickdraw, so you can full attack), and possibly the feat that makes thrown attacks str-based. Forgot the name of that one. Plus, the trio of PBS, Precise Shot, and Rapid Shot, of course. There's also a feat in UC to throw w/o provoking AoOs, but you could just use the axe for melee on the enemy in those situations instead of spending a feat...

If D&D 3E material is available, it's much easier to make such a character. Get Master Thrower (a 5 level PrC...all of them are good), 4 levels in Bloodstorm Blade PrC (the last 6 levels are...meh), the Goggles of Foefinding (2500 gp; ignore non-total cover penalties) and Gauntlets of Extended Range (~2000 gp; DOUBLES thrown weapon range increments) from Magic Item Compendium, and try to get the DM to allow the 3E version of Far Shot feat (doubles thrown range increments) instead of the nerfed/worthless version PF churned out. You can also pick up the two feat chain of Brutal Throw (Use Str for ranged attack rolls) and Power Throw (Power Attack with thrown weapons; better than PF's Deadly Aim since it has a better ratio and you can apply PA for both ranged and melee attacks at that point).
