Quick Question About Alchemist's Stink Bomb

Rules Questions

So here is the thing, I was playing the other day with my alchemist and I was throwing "Stink Bomb" like I always do and my DM told me the following.

1) If I throw multiple Stink Bombs in the same area, enemies only have to roll fortitude for the first one and not the others since the cloud effect from the first one is still in place and it doesn't stack.

2) Since the feat "Precise Bomb" states that it only avoids splash damage and not status effects. If I throw Stink Bomb and an ally was on melee with an enemy, even with the feat I couldn't save them from being affected by the Stink Cloud.

Anyways, I wanted to know if you guys agree with this, because if it works this way then Stink Bomb is no longer the "King of Bombs" as Ogre stated in his guide, since it is not viable for use in A LOT of combat scenarios.

Thank you.

Most areas of effect spells conflict with melee. It's why it's often best for AoE generators to act early in initiative. Stink Bomb is ideal, particularly if your melee fighters stand just outside of range. People escaping the cloud will provoke attacks of opportunity in addition to feeling the impact of the bomb.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

1. They have to save against each one, they're all different bomb effects. The condition itself would not stack and the durations would overlap, but they WOULD have to save against each.

2. Most bomb effects specify they affect the splash area of the bomb. If you are not splashing a particular square (that an ally is in, say), then the cloud should not exist there, it would be an empty spot in the cloud. If the bomb effect goes even further and says "those damaged by the bomb...." the DM really has no leg to stand on.

So basically, your DM is wrong, but good luck getting him to change his mind. You might be stuck with his so-called "RAW" rulings.

Thanks for the answer StreamOfTheSky.

I am going to assume that since no one else posted, your take on the subject is the general consensus.

Let's just hope I am able to convince my DM.
