Teiflingsd and detect evil

Advice

OK. so I just started the Wrath of the Righteous AP, and one of the Characters is a teifling witch. I am a paladin. Now to explain, I am trying to defend the witch against another character stating that his actions speak louder than his skin. That being said I offered to detect evil on him to 'prove' that he isn't a bad guy. Outsiders detect at 1st level, and I'm not sure how teiflings and aasimars work. Do they detect what their alignment is or their heritage? does a good aligned Teifling detect as evil?

Tieflings don't have the evil subtype, so they would not detect evil simply because they are a tiefling. They would only detect as evil if the tiefling had an actual evil alignment.

Also, it has been argued (though I can't remember the conclusion) that native outsiders don't detect as other outsider do. And instead you would have to be 5th level for detect spells to detect anything (or be a cleric/paladin/antipaladin).

There tends to be a lot of debate about this on the rules thread (would have been the place for this, BTW).

Overall, tieflings do not have the evil subtype, and presumably (since it would have been a jerk move otherwise for the player to do this with a paladin in the party) the witch is not evil. So, since native outsiders do detect at level 1, the the witch should not detect evil, and this would be a valid test.

Liberty's Edge

Tieflings and Aasimar have no Alignment Subtype, and thus detect as their normal Alignment.

That said...at 1st level almost nobody detects as Evil, since unless you're a Cleric, Paladin, Undead, or are an Outsider with an Alignment Subtype (which, as mentioned, Tieflings do not have) you don't start showing up to Detect Evil until you have 5 or more Hit Dice.

So it works to prove he's not a Fiend or actively worshiping an Evil God. It doesn't work to prove he's not more mundanely Evil. Of course...if they're just being racist they likely have no idea of how that works.

EDIT: And apparently that second part has been disputed in regards to Tieflings. Eh, whatever. As long as he's not Evil you're good to go either way.

Yeah, thus the debate. The idea is that, even if you are not connected enough to the plane that it affects your alignment, it still makes you a blaring torch for detect spells. Or RAW wise, it makes no differentiation between nonplayable and playable native outsiders, so it still works.

But I guess you are right, since those would be the causes of 'othering' for a tiefling witch. As long as you assure people that she is not actually a demon, and she is not getting her magical powers from demons, then she is fine.

To sum up (and I believe that this qualifies for your situation) as long as the tiefling is not of an actual evil alignment then Detect Evil will not produce anything on the witch.
